Bacteroides sp (Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Bacteroides oralis, and Bacteroides fragilis), peptostreptococci, and fusobacteria are important pathogens in respiratory tract infections (RTI). These organisms are often recovered mixed with other aerobic, facultative, and anaerobic bacteria. Evidence supporting their virulence is provided by studies showing their synergistic potentials in mixed infections and their increased virulence when encapsulated. A recent increase in numbers of beta-lactamase producing strains of anaerobic gram-negative bacteria in RTI has been associated with increased fa

Patients who contract genital tract infections are predominantly young, are otherwise healthy, and generally respond well to treatment for bacterial infections. These infections are most commonly polymicrobial in etiology, with several noteworthy exceptions. Often there is an inciting event such as childbirth, surgical intervention, pregnancy termination or intrauterine contraceptive device insertion. With treatment, prognosis for cure is excellent; however, sequelae such as recurrent infections, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy can be serious. Bacteria encountered in the female genital tract

Acute pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis is mainly attributed to haematogenous spread of aerobic bacteria, while anaerobic osteomyelitis results from contiguous spread of polymicrobial infections through breaks in the gut mucosal barrier and involves the vertebral bodies in only about 2%-5%. Herein, we report two cases of vertebral osteomyelitis due to Bacteroides fragilis. It is noteworthy that cases of vertebral osteomyelitis due to Bacteroides fragilis have been attributed to the extension of intra-abdominal or pelvic floor infections. However, in the two cases described, there was no history

BACKGROUND: Anaerobic infections remain clinically significant yet underrecognized due to diagnostic challenges and limited routine susceptibility testing in clinical laboratories. Among these pathogens, Bacteroides fragilis is a clinically important anaerobe associated with bloodstream and deep-seated infections. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Bacteroides fragilis bacteremia in a tertiary care hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with blood cultures positive for Bacteroid

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of 4973 Bacteroides spp. isolates recovered from various sources of patients from 12 countries (99.6% from European countries) in the Antimicrobial Testing Leadership and Surveillance (ATLAS) programme, 2007-2020, were investigated. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the isolates with six commonly used agents were determined using the agar dilution method. Among the isolates, 10 Bacteroides spp. were included: B. fragilis (n=3180, 64.0%) was encountered most frequently, followed by B. thetaiotaomicron (n=675) and B. ovatus (n=409). During the 14 year

Patients with sickle cell disease are at increased risk for multiple infections including osteomyelitis. The most reported causative organisms are Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. Anaerobic infections including Bacteroides fragilis are not commonly seen. Here, we report the first case of a 28-year-old female patient with sickle cell disease and acute hematogenous Bacteroides fragilis tibial osteomyelitis. Diagnosis was made by isolating the organism from blood and tibial fluid cultures. The patient was successfully managed with a course of intravenous followed by oral antibiotics and

INTRODUCTION: Resistance to β-lactams has risen globally among Bacteroides species. Consequently, delafloxacin has emerged as a therapeutic alternative against these microorganisms. The main objective of this study is to analyse the MIC of delafloxacin in Bacteroides spp. isolates and compare it with commonly used anaerobic antimicrobial agents.
METHOD: The susceptibility of delafloxacin and other anaerobic antibiotics was assessed in 370 isolates of the genus Bacteroides and MIC50 and MIC90 values were determined for all antibiotics.
RESULTS: In Bacteroides spp. and the Bacteroides fragilis

The presence of capsulate Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic gram-positive cocci was investigated in pus specimens from 182 children with chronic orofacial infections or abscesses and in pharyngeal swabs from 26 children without inflammation. Of 216 Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic cocci isolated from clinical infections, 170 (79%) were capsulate, compared with 34 (35%) of 96 isolates from normal pharyngeal flora (p less than 0.001). The commonest organisms found to be capsulate more often from infected patients than from controls belonged to the B. melaninogenicus group. The possible evolution of e

Bacteroides fragilis is an obligated anaerobic bacillus which forms part of the normal intestinal flora of the colon and is often seen as a common pathogen in intraabdominal infections. It is an infrequent pathogen in cases of meningitis; a review of the literature reports only eight cases of this disease in children, especially in neonates with conditioning factors such as abdominal sepsis, chronic middle ear otitis and atrial-ventricular derivations. A case of a newborn baby girl with lumbosacral myelomeningocele is reported. After the defect was surgically corrected, the wound became infect

The development of antibiotic resistance in anaerobic bacteria has a tremendous impact on the selection of antimicrobial agents for empirical therapy. Susceptibility studies have documented the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and indicate distinct differences in resistance patterns related to individual hospitals, geographic regions, and antibiotic-prescribing regimens. Resistance to beta-lactam drugs, clindamycin, tetracyclines, and 5-nitroimidazoles (metronidazole) has been observed. The prime mechanism for resistance to beta-lactam agents is the production of beta-lactamases. Resistan

BACKGROUNDS: Members of the Bacteroides fragilis group are the most frequently isolated anaerobic bacteria causing a wide range of severe anaerobic infections. In spite of the high frequency of their occurrence, their presence in clinical specimens is underestimated or even disregarded. The article warns of the severity of these anaerobic pathogens, particularly if detected in clinical samples from the abdominal area. It was hypothesized that there is a correlation between the presence of the bacteria in patients preferring high-meat diet and cancers of the small intestine and especially the c

The effect of encapsulation on the virulence, survival, and protection of anaerobic bacteria from phagocytosis is reviewed. Support for the importance of encapsulated Bacteroides sp. and anaerobic and facultative Gram-positive cocci (AFGPC) was provided by their higher recovery rate in oropharyngeal infections, compared to their number in the normal oral flora. Studies of the pathogenicity of anaerobic bacteria of the Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, and Clostridium genera and AFGPC are also presented. The organisms were inoculated into mice and their ability to induce subcutaneous abscesses was de

The Bacteroides fragilis group of bacteria are the most numerous microorganisms in the colon and the most common anaerobic isolates from human infections. Although clindamycin hydrochloride is still considered the antibiotic of choice for treatment of infections with these bacteria, resistant strains are becoming more common. To determine the clinical significance of clindamycin-resistant bacteroides, we reviewed the charts of 14 patients with resistant isolates. Clindamycin resistance was a major factor in the clinical course of at least four patients. Three of these did not recover until the

Bacteroides fragilis is a most frequent anaerobic pathogen isolated from human infections, particularly found in the abdominal cavity. Different factors contribute to the pathogenesis and persistence of B. fragilis at infection sites. The knowledge of the virulence factors can provide applicable information for finding alternative options for the antibiotic therapy and treatment of B. fragilis caused infections. Herein, a comprehensive review of the important B. fragilis virulence factors was prepared. In addition to B. fragilis toxin (BFT) and its potential role in the diarrhea and cancer dev

Ninety intestinal organisms (71 isolates from fecal samples of neutropenic patients with cancer or from various sites in patients with intraabdominal infections and 19 control strains) were examined by reverse-phase thin-layer chromatography for their ability to produce menaquinones in vitro. Menaquinones were found in all of 24 organisms of the Bacteroides fragilis group. Two other Bacteroides species, Bacteroides disiens and Bacteroides bivius, also produced menaquinones. A single isolate of Bacteroides species lacked menaquinones. These constituents were found in all of five strains of Esch

Bacteroides are gram-negative anaerobes and one of the most abundant members the lower GI tract microflora where they play an important role in normal intestinal physiology. Disruption of this commensal relationship has a great impact on human health and disease. Bacteroides spp. are significant opportunistic pathogens causing infections when the mucosal barrier integrity is disrupted following predisposing conditions such as GI surgery, perforated or gangrenous appendicitis, perforated ulcer, diverticulitis, trauma and inflammatory bowel diseases. B. fragilis accounts for 60-90 % of all anaer

Aspirates of pus from an abscess of Bartholin's gland in 28 patients were studied for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was obtained on culture in 26 specimens. A total of 67 bacterial isolates (43 anaerobic and 24 aerobic and facultative) were recovered, accounting for 2.6 isolates per specimen (1.7 anaerobic and 0.9 aerobic and facultatives). Anaerobic bacteria only were present in eight patients, aerobic and facultatives in five and mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora in 13. Single bacterial isolates were recovered in six infections. The predominant anaerobic organisms were Bac
