Dynamics of the microbiota found in the vaginas of dairy cows during the transition period: Associations with uterine diseases and reproductive outcome.

We investigated the microbiota found in the vaginas of Holstein dairy cows during the transition period and described the differences in bacterial composition and total bacterial load (TBL) associated with disease and fertility. Vaginal swabs were collected at -7, 0, 3, and 7 d relative to parturition from 111 dairy cows housed on a commercial dairy farm near Ithaca, New York. Microbiota were characterized by next-generation DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, and TBL was determined by real-time quantitative PCR. We applied repeated-measures ANOVA to evaluate the associations of ute

Simultaneous removal of manganese and nitrate by manganese redox driven moving bed biofilm reactor: Characteristic, biological community and mechanism.

This study investigated the effects of different manganese forms (MnCl2 and MnO2) on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance of moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). Compared to the control without manganese, the addition of MnCl2 and MnO2 increased NO3--N removal efficiency by 11.47 % and 9.54 %, and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency by 17.91 % and 15.45 %, respectively. The average accumulation of NO2--N decreased from 3.02 to 0.04 mg/L and 0.18 mg/L, respectively. The manganese redox system induced by MnCl2 enhanced total phosephorus (TP) removal efficiency by approximately 3.5 ti

Temporal and spatial variation of fermentation function, microbiota characteristics and expression of VFAs transporter genes in the ruminant stomach of Tibetan sheep during different phenological phase.

The gut microbiota in Tibetan sheep's ruminant stomach varies across phenological phases, influencing nutrient absorption and adaptation. During the green grass period, acetic, propionic, and butyric acid concentrations in the rumen were higher than in the regreening and withered grass periods (P < 0.05). MCT1 expression peaked during regreening. Bacteroidetes dominated during the withered grass period (P < 0.01), with Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Prevotella most abundant in the rumen. Spatially, rumen VFA concentrations and MCT1 expression were significantly higher than in other stomachs (

Improved microalgae growth and lipid production in anaerobic digestate with ultraviolet radiation pretreatment.

Inappropriate sterilization strategies inhibit microalgal growth when culturing microalgae with anaerobic digestate. This study aimed to scientifically select a low-cost disinfection pretreatment of anaerobic digestate for large-scale microalgae cultivations. In this work, three different methods, including autoclaving, ultraviolet or NaClO treatments, were employed to sterilize the municipal anaerobic digestate. Scenedesmus quadricauda was then cultured in diluted liquid digestate for the simultaneous lipid production and nutrient removal. The results indicated that the growth of S. quadricau

Comparing the gut microbiota of Sichuan golden monkeys across multiple captive and wild settings: roles of anthropogenic activities and host factors.

BACKGROUND: Captivity and artificial food provision are common conservation strategies for the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). Anthropogenic activities have been reported to impact the fitness of R. roxellana by altering their gut microbiota, a crucial indicator of animal health. Nevertheless, the degree of divergence in gut microbiota between different anthropogenically-disturbed (AD) R. roxellana and their counterparts in the wild has yet to be elucidated. Here, we conducted a comparative analysis of the gut microbiota across nine populations of R. roxellana sp

Gut microbiota changes in horses with Chlamydia.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases pose a significant threat to public health. Chlamydia, as an intracellular pathogen, can colonize the intestinal tract of humans and animals, changing the gut microbiota. However, only a few studies have evaluated alterations in the gut microbiota of horses infected with Chlamydia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate gut microbiota and serum biochemical indicators in horses with Chlamydial infection (IG) and healthy horses (HG). Fecal and blood samples were collected from 16 horses (IG: 10; HG: 6) before morning feeding for the determination of gut microbio

Parabacteroides distasonis induces depressive-like behavior in a mouse model of Crohn's disease.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are particularly susceptible to behavioral diagnoses, and the microbiome has been repeatedly implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD. The intestinal microbiome's ability to affect behavior has become increasingly recognized and studied. The so-called 'psychobiome' has been linked to a plethora of neurological and psychological diagnoses, including autism and Parkinson's disease. Despite the ability of many bacterial species within the human intestinal microbiome to synthesize neurotransmitters, it has never been previously reported that a single bac

Factors Influencing Equine Gut Microbiota: Current Knowledge.

Gastrointestinal microbiota play a crucial role in nutrient digestion, maintaining animal health and welfare. Various factors may affect microbial balance often leading to disturbances that may result in debilitating conditions such as colic and laminitis. The invention of next-generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatics has provided valuable information on the effects of factors influencing equine gut microbiota. Among those factors are nutrition and management (e.g., diet, supplements, exercise), medical substances (e.g., antimicrobials, anthelmintics, anesthetics), animal-related

Gut microbiota modulates osteoclast glutathione synthesis and mitochondrial biogenesis in mice subjected to ovariectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoporosis is a common bone disease in the elderly mainly regulated by osteoblasts (OBs) and osteoclasts (OCs). The gut microbiota has been recognized as an important factor in many physiological and pathological processes in the host. Thus, we hypothesize that the gut microbiota is necessary for postmenopausal osteoporosis and that germ-free (GF) mice are protected from osteoporosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Osteoporosis models were established by performing ovariectomy (OVX) in mice. Bone mass was measured by micro-CT, and gut microbiota were assessed by 16s rDNA sequencing. Reac

Intratumoral microbiota associates with systemic immune inflammation state in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The nasopharynx serves as a crucial niche for the microbiome of the upper respiratory tract. However, the association between the intratumoral microbiota and host systemic inflammation and immune status in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain uncertain. METHODS: We performed 5R 16S rDNA sequencing on NPC tissue samples, followed by diversity analysis, LEfSe differential analysis, and KEGG functional prediction. The analyses were based on indices such as AISI, SIRI, PAR, PLR, and NAR. Correlation analyses between microbes and these indices were performed to identify microbes assoc

Biogeography of microbiome and short-chain fatty acids in the gastrointestinal tract of duck.

It is generally accepted that domestic ducks are valuable protein sources for humans. The gastrointestinal ecosystem contains enormous and complicated microbes that have a profound effect on the nutrition, immunity, health, and production of domestic ducks. To deeply understand the gastrointestinal microbial composition of domestic ducks, we investigated the microbiomes of 7 different gastrointestinal locations (proventriculus, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and rectum) and the short-chain fatty acids in 15 healthy muscovy ducks based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, qPCR, and gas chrom

Gastrointestinal microbial population of turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) affected by hemorrhagic enteritis virus.

Hemorrhagic enteritis (HE) is an acute viral disease that affects avian species, particularly turkeys, compromising their commercial production and having a negative effect on animal welfare. Turkey adenovirus 3 (TAdV-3), is the main causal agent of the disease. In this study, we considered 3 groups of turkeys to achieve 2 purposes: 1) A preliminary investigation on the microbiota content in the 4 parts of healthy turkey's intestine (group A), namely duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and ceca was done; 2) an investigation on the relationship between natural infections with TAdV-3 and the intestinal mi

Changes in the microbiota in different intestinal segments of mice with sepsis.

INTRODUCTION: The small intestine, as the main digestion and absorption site of the gastrointestinal tract, is often overlooked in studies, and the overall microbiota does not reflect the makeup of the microbiota in different segments of the intestine. Therefore, we aimed to exclude the influence of routine ICU treatment measures on sepsis patients and observed changes in the diversity and abundance of gut microbiota in different intestinal segments of septic mice. METHODS: The mice were randomly divided into the CLP6h group and the sham group. The contents of the colon and small intestine of

Mariculture affects antibiotic resistome and microbiome in the coastal environment.

Antibiotics are increasingly used and released into the marine environment due to the rapid development of mariculture, resulting in spread of antibiotic resistance. The pollution, distribution, and characteristics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbiomes have been investigated in this study. Results showed that 20 antibiotics were detected in Chinese coastal environment, with predominance of erythromycin-H2O, enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline. In coastal mariculture sites, antibiotic concentrations were significantly higher than in control sites, and more types of ant

The digestive fate of beef versus plant-based burgers from bolus to stool.

Ultra-processed, plant-based burgers (PB) and traditional comminuted-beef burgers (BB) share similar organoleptic characteristics, yet a knowledge gap exists in understanding how consumption of these divergent physical structures alters the lipemic response and gut microbiota. PB, comprised of highly refined ingredients, is formulated with no intact whole food structure, while BB entraps lipids throughout the myofibrillar protein network. PB presented significantly higher free fatty acid (FFA) bioaccessibility (28.2 ± 4.80 %) compared to BB (8.73 ± 0.52 %), as obtained from their FFA release p

The surface layer of Tannerella forsythia contributes to serum resistance and oral bacterial coaggregation.

Tannerella forsythia is an anaerobic, Gram-negative bacterium involved in the so-called "red complex," which is associated with severe and chronic periodontitis. The surface layer (S-layer) of T. forsythia is composed of cell surface glycoproteins, such as TfsA and TfsB, and is known to play a role in adhesion/invasion and suppression of proinflammatory cytokine expression. Here we investigated the association of this S-layer with serum resistance and coaggregation with other oral bacteria. The growth of the S-layer-deficient mutant in a bacterial medium containing more than 20% non-heat-inact

Commensal-derived metabolites govern Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis in host intestine.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that the commensal microbes act as a barrier against invading pathogens and enteric infections are the consequences of multi-layered interactions among commensals, pathogens, and the host intestinal tissue. However, it remains unclear how perturbations of the gut microbiota compromise host infection resistance, especially through changes at species and metabolite levels. RESULTS: Here, we illustrate how Bacteroides vulgatus, a dominant species of the Bacteroidetes phylum in mouse intestine, suppresses infection by Vibrio cholerae, an important human pathog

Repetitive transcranial direct current stimulation modulates the brain-gut-microbiome axis in obese rodents.

BACKGROUND: Complex interactions between the brain, gut and adipose tissue allow to recognize obesity as a neurometabolic disorder. The recent data have shown that gut microbiota can play a potential role in obesity development. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a safe and non-invasive technique to modulate the activity of cerebral cortex and other connected brain areas also in context of appetite control. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of repetitive anodal tDCS (AtDCS) of prefrontal cortex on feeding behavior, metabolic status and selected phyla of gut
