AIMS: Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (Railliet, 1898) and Angiostrongylus chabaudi (Biocca, 1957) are important cardiopulmonary metastrongyloids in felids. This case report describes, for the first time, a natural and patent mixed infection caused by A. abstrusus and A. chabaudi in a European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most important, this is a rare report of fatal parasitism in wildlife, involving a severe verminous bronchopneumonia and gastrointestinal nematode and cestode infection with Toxocara cati, Taenia taeniaeformis, Aonchotheca putorii, and Ancylos

BACKGROUND: Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) represents a chronic progressive interstitial nephritis in striking correlation with uroepithelial tumours of the upper urinary tract. The disease has endemic distribution in the Danube river regions in several Balkan countries.DNA methylation is a primary epigenetic modification that is involved in major processes such as cancer, genomic imprinting, gene silencing, etc. The significance of CpG island methylation status in normal development, cell differentiation and gene expression is widely recognized, although still stays poorly understood.

The aim of this study was to determine the HLA allele and haplotype frequencies of the volunteer donors from the Macedonian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (MBMDR). We analyzed 1541 donors, from different nationalities and presented the HLA allele and haplotype frequencies for Macedonian, Albanian and Macedonian Muslims, most numerous nationalities in MBMDR. Difference between the three groups was observed for allele frequencies in HLA-C and HLA-DRB1 loci. The most common haplotype in Macedonian was HLA-A*01-B*08-C*07-DRB1*03, while in Albanian and Macedonian Muslims HLA-A*02-B*18-C*07-DRB1*11. Thi

There is accumulating evidence that Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is an environmental disease caused by aristolochic acids (AAs) released from the decomposition of Aristolochia clematitis L., an AA-containing weed that grows abundantly in the Balkan Peninsula. AA exposure has also been associated with carcinoma development in the upper urinary tract of some patients suffering from BEN. It is believed that an aristolactam-nitrenium ion intermediate with a delocalized positive charge produced in the hepatic metabolism of AAs binds to DNA and the resulting DNA adduct is responsible for initiat

Several diseases caused by tick-borne pathogens, including Lyme borreliosis (LB) and spotted fever group rickettsioses, are endemic in the Balkan Peninsula, positioned between Central Europe and the Middle East. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess serological exposure to Borrelia spp. and spotted fever group Rickettsiae (SFGR) among individuals with recent tick bites and healthy controls in two Balkan countries-Serbia and North Macedonia. Serum samples from 223 participants were tested for anti-Borrelia and anti-SFGR IgG antibodies. SFGR exposure was significantly higher in tick-exposed

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are carcinogenic and nephrotoxic plant alkaloids present in Aristolochia species, used in traditional medicine. Recent biomolecular and environmental studies have incriminated these toxins as an etiological agent in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a severe kidney disease occurring in the Balkan Peninsula. The questions on how the susceptible populations are exposed to these toxins have not yet been clearly answered. Exposure to AAs through the food chain, and environmental pollution (soil/dust), could provide an explanation for the presence of BEN in the countries wh

Background/Objectives: The White-tailed Sea-eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, experienced severe population declines throughout Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, followed by a remarkable recovery in recent decades. Although the genetic structure of northern and central European populations has been extensively investigated, the phylogeographic history and contribution of the lower Danube population to the mitochondrial genetic diversity of the species remain poorly understood. Methods: We analyzed mitochondrial control region (MT-CR HVR1) sequences from White-tailed Sea-eagles b

Known for over a century, the Late Miocene mammalian faunas of Veles, North Macedonia, have long been recognized for their scientific importance. However, hominid remains had not been previously reported from this fossil-rich area. Here, we report the discovery of an isolated upper molar from the vicinity of Veles-most likely from the Belushka locality-which constitutes the first known record of a Late Miocene hominid from the Republic of North Macedonia, and provide a review of the associated mammalian assemblages. The molar-probably an M3-exhibits a relatively large crown, broad and low cusp

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a rare progressive chronic renal disease found in residents living along the Balkan peninsula. We present a 92-year-old female who complained initially of cardio-respiratory symptoms and was found to have an acute hypoxemic respiratory failure with hypervolemia. The patient underwent computed tomography imaging and was found to have bilateral pleural effusions and moderate left-sided renal atrophy with left-sided hydronephrosis. The patient underwent diuresis for fluid overload and was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics for hospital-acquired pneumonia.

Here, we report the outcome of 226 myeloma patients presenting with extramedullary plasmacytoma or paraosseous involvement in a retrospective study conducted in 19 centers from 11 countries. Extramedullary disease was detected at diagnosis or relapse between January 2010 and November 2017. Extramedullary plasmacytoma and paraosseous involvement were observed in 130 patients at diagnosis (92 of 38) and in 96 at relapse (84 of 12). The median time from multiple myeloma diagnosis to the development of extramedullary disease was 25.1 months (range 3.1-106.3 months) in the relapse group (median fol

RATIONALE: Monomelic amyotrophy is a rare form of motor neuron disease in which the neurogenic atrophy is restricted to 1 limb, mostly the distal part of the arm. The disease most often occurs in Asia, especially in Japan and India, while in European countries, this disease is rarely recognized. Registration and publication of new cases of this disease aims to increase the awareness of clinicians about the existence of this disease in European countries, and with the aim of easier recognition and faster diagnosis of this essentially benign disorder.

In Bulgaria, only Dobrava orthohantavirus has been detected in patients and in rodents. In order to elucidate possible Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) circulation, 131 bank voles (Myodes glareolus) were captured. PUUV RNA was detected in 14 (10.7%). Partial L segment sequences were recovered from six M. glareolus. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all PUUV sequences from this study clustered together among the Alpe-Adrian lineage. It is the first genetic evidence of the virus circulation in a Balkan country outside north-western Balkans. The findings in this study extended the known edge of vir

Glacial cycles repeatedly fragmented temperate species into refugial populations, fostering divergence as a first stage towards speciation. Yet, interglacial expansions often reconnected these lineages, allowing gene flow to erode differentiation and reshape phylogeographic trajectories. We investigate these dynamics in Western Palearctic common toads (Bufo bufo complex), integrating genome-wide ddRAD-seq loci with an extensive mitochondrial dataset. Phylogenomic analyses resolved the three recognized species B. eichwaldi, B. spinosus and B. bufo, and within the latter, four major lineages dis

Phlebotomine sand flies are generalist vectors with significant implications for public health. They are able to transmit phleboviruses that cause sand fly fever, headaches, or meningitis in humans. Albania is a country in Southeast Europe with a typical Mediterranean climate which provides convenient conditions for the presence of sand flies. Hence, the circulation of phleboviruses, such as the Toscana and Balkan viruses, has been recently described in the country. We followed a virus discovery approach on sand fly samples collected in 2015 and 2016 in seven regions of Albania, with the aim t

Over the last decades the distribution area of the golden jackal (Canis aureus) has increased significantly in Europe, particularly in the Balkan Peninsula and in Central Europe. Vagrant individuals were described in many European countries. Herein, we report Echinococcus multilocularis (total worm count: 412) and Trichinella spiralis (101 larvae/g for muscles of the lower forelimb) infections in two golden jackals shot in Hungary. It is a new host record of E. multilocularis and T. spiralis in Europe and Hungary, respectively. As jackals migrate for long distances through natural ecological c

BACKGROUND: The implementation of quality indicators in the atrial fibrillation (AF) care should be considered to improve quality of management and patient outcome.
METHODS: In the post-hoc analysis of the BALKAN-AF dataset, we assessed concordance with quality indicators for AF management. Available domains for AF management [patient assessment (baseline), anticoagulation, rate control strategy, rhythm control strategy and risk factor management] were identified and assessed at baseline visit.
RESULTS: Among 132 patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 0 (men) or 1 (women), 75 (56.8%) were pre

West Nile virus (WNV, family Flaviviridae) is the most geographically widespread arbovirus affecting humans. It circulates between wild birds and mosquitoes, while humans and horses are dead-end hosts. In recent years, several outbreaks have been reported from European countries, including the Balkan Peninsula. In the Republic of Kosovo, a southern Balkan country, data on WNV are scarce, and neither mosquito monitoring nor WNV surveillance is established. To address this gap, we aimed to assess a first monitoring approach that should set the basis and support future large-scale activities in t

Snakes of the Balkan peninsula represent an important part of the fauna of this part of Europe. Due to its biochemical complexity, snake venom cannot be compared with venoms of any other venomous animals. The primary effect of venoms of snakes of this region (Viperina) is local (myonecrosis and hemorrhage) and hemotoxic. Following the bite local signs occur very soon: pain, edema, erythema, signs of hemolysis as well as systemic: nausea, vomiting, hemorrhages in vital organs, sweating, prostration. Systemic manifestations following viperine bite, edema and hemorrhagic complications mostly disa

Tomicus piniperda is an economically important pine bark beetle infesting European Pinus spp. stands. We sequenced and analyzed 797 bp of the mitochondrial genome from individuals obtained from 34 populations sampled throughout the European range. We obtained 36 haplotypes, from which a haplotype network was constructed. In the Iberian Peninsula, high-genetic variability was detected with numerous endemic haplotypes. In contrast, the other European populations were less diverse with a single haplotype predominating from the Pyrenees to Scandinavia. Nevertheless, even within Europe, a few popul

The Balkan Peninsula is a hotspot for sand fly-borne phleboviruses (SbPVs), yet Kosovo had no confirmed viral detection invectors despite serological evidence of human and animal exposure. This study reports the discovery, genetic characterization, and seroprevalence of a novel phlebovirus, Grapi virus (GRPV), in Kosovo. Entomological surveys (2022-2023) collected 3,575 sand flies across seven districts. Morphological and molecular identification revealed Phlebotomus perfiliewi as the dominant species. Pan-phlebovirus RT-PCR screening identified GRPV in seven pools. Complete genome sequencing
