Are primary care practitioners in Barbados following hypertension guidelines? - a chart audit.

BACKGROUND: About 55% of the population 40 to 80 years of age in Barbados is hypertensive. The quality of hypertension primary care compared to available practice guidelines is uncertain. FINDINGS: Charts of hypertensive and diabetic patients were randomly sampled at all public and 20 private sector primary care clinics. Charts of all hypertensive patients ≥ 40 years of age were then selected and processes of care and blood pressure (BP) maintenance < 140/90 documented.343 charts of hypertensive patients (170 public, and 173 private) were audited. Patients had the following characteristics: m

Prevalence of bulimic behaviours and eating attitudes in schoolgirls from Trinidad and Barbados.

We investigated eating attitudes and the prevalence of bulimic disorders in a group of 362 schoolgirls from the islands of Trinidad and Barbados using key questions from the Bulimia Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE) and additional questions for the exploration of eating attitudes and dieting practices. A random sample of 92 girls were interviewed using the DSM-III-R Bulimia Diagnostic Interview. Only three subjects (0.8%) scored over the cut-off point on the BITE. None of the interviewees was diagnosed as having bulimia nervosa. Two hundred and forty-five girls (67.7%) reported being terrif

Leptospiral infection: a household serosurvey in urban and rural communities in Barbados and Trinidad.

A longitudinal study of leptospiral agglutinins in subjects five years of age and over was undertaken in Trinidad and Barbados between 1980 and 1982. Households were sampled randomly from one urban and two rural communities on each island, giving a total of 576 eligible individuals in Barbados and 524 in Trinidad. Participants were examined three times at approximately annual intervals. The prevalence of seropositivity at a titre of 1:50 using the microscopic agglutination test was 18.5% in Barbados and 21.9% in Trinidad. Prevalence increased steeply with age in both sexes and was higher in ma

Serological Evidence of Multiple Zoonotic Viral Infections among Wild Rodents in Barbados.

BACKGROUND: Rodents are reservoirs for several zoonotic pathogens that can cause human infectious diseases, including orthohantaviruses, mammarenaviruses and orthopoxviruses. Evidence exists for these viruses circulating among rodents and causing human infections in the Americas, but much less evidence exists for their presence in wild rodents in the Caribbean. METHODS: Here, we conducted serological and molecular investigations of wild rodents in Barbados to determine the prevalence of orthohantavirus, mammarenavirus and orthopoxvirus infections, and the possible role of these rodent species

Human papillomavirus genotype distribution in cervical samples among vaccine naïve Barbados women.

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to provide baseline HPV genotype distribution among women in Barbados before HPV immunization was introduced. This information would then be used as a denominator for post-vaccine surveillance and is expected to aid in understanding the effect of vaccination on cervical disease in Barbados. METHODS: Liquid-based cytology specimens were collected from 413 women (age range 18-65 years) attending three clinics, in a pre-vaccination, population-based study. After consent was obtained, sexual behavior and socio-demographic information were acquired from self-admi

Retrospective analysis of endometrial cancer among Afro-Caribbean women in Barbados 2008-2017.

Endometrial cancer data amongst Barbadian women was collected, to inform screening and management in this under-studied population. We analysed all recorded primary cases between January 1st 2008, and December 31st, 2017. Age-specific incidence, and crude mortality rates were calculated. Descriptive statistics characterized demographics, risk factors, prescription data and histopathology. Log-rank tests assessed simple group differences by EC type. Survival analysis based on tumour type was plotted using Kaplein-Meir curves. There were 270 recorded cases of EC, averaging 66 (8.8) years old (SD

A historical study of human T lymphotropic virus type I transmission in Barbados.

A 1972 historic sera collection from two health districts in Barbados, British West Indies, was evaluated for risk factors and epidemiologic patterns of HTLV-I (human T cell leukemia virus type I) during a time prior to the first report of its discovery in 1980. HTLV-I seroprevalence is 4.2% (43 of 1,012) and is consistent with current estimates in endemic areas in the Caribbean. Age-dependent rise (P less than .01) and higher seroprevalence rates for females (P less than .01) are indistinguishable from the pattern in contemporary Caribbean and Japanese populations. HTLV-I seropositivity was 4

Educational Attainment and Diabetic Foot Ulceration: Outcomes From the Barbados Diabetic Foot Study.

Diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) contributes significantly to diabetes-related morbidity and amputation. In Barbados, where amputation rates are among the highest globally, the influence of socioeconomic factors on ulceration outcomes remains underexplored. Educational attainment, a social determinant of health, may influence health behaviours, engagement with healthcare services, and ultimately clinical outcomes. This study examines whether educational attainment is associated with diabetic foot ulcer severity, as measured by the SINBAD scoring system, and six-week healing outcomes among inpati

Checklist of the shallow-water marine Brachyura (Crustacea: Decapoda) of Barbados, West Indies.

Here we provide an illustrated and annotated checklist of brachyuran crabs associated with shallow water marine habitats (nearshore rubble and subtidal) in Barbados, West Indies (13.1939°N, 59.5432°W). Twenty-one (21) survey sites in nearshore rubble and shallow subtidal habitats were surveyed between October 2018 to September 2021. Nearshore rubble habitats were surveyed at low tide during the day and night periods. Shallow nearshore subtidal habitats were surveyed every 9-12 days from February to October 2019 using crab traps placed ~ 4 m deep on sandy and rocky bottoms. A total of 1,640 spe

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Barbados: Driving change in practice at the national level.

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is of growing concern globally. The risk for transmission of antimicrobial resistant organisms across several continents to the Caribbean is a real one given its tourism industry. After a cluster of cases of CRKP were detected, several studies detailed in this report were initiated to better characterize the problem. METHODS: A hospital-wide point prevalence study and active surveillance were performed at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Barbados in 2013 to assess the prevalence of CRKP infection/colonization. Following this, a

Risk factors for breast cancer in a black population--the Barbados National Cancer Study.

The Barbados National Cancer Study (BNCS) is a nationwide case-control study investigating environmental and genetic factors for breast cancer (BC) in a predominantly African-origin population with similar ancestry as African-Americans. This report evaluates associations of incident BC in the BNCS to various factors, including demographic, anthropometric, reproductive and family history variables, not investigated previously in this population. The BNCS included 241 incident BC cases and 481 age-matched female controls, with mean ages of 57 and 56 years, respectively. In addition to a reported

The clinical characteristics and outcome of children hospitalized with dengue in Barbados, an English Caribbean country.

INTRODUCTION: Although dengue is endemic in all English-speaking Caribbean countries, there are no published studies on the clinical presentations and outcomes of children hospitalized with dengue from this region. This study aims to assess the clinical charcteristics and the outcome in children hospitalized with dengue. METHODS: This was a population-based prospective study of all the children hospitalized with confirmed dengue in 2009 in Barbados. All children suspected to have dengue were routinely screened for dengue infection and underwent routine blood tests. Relevant data was extracted

Hantavirus infection among children hospitalized for febrile illness suspected to be dengue in Barbados.

Emerging picture of hantavirus infection in the South America is characterized by greater proportion of childhood infection and wider spectrum of disease from mild asymptomatic to lethal cardiopulmonary disease. Barbados is endemic for dengue and leptospirosis, both of which share clinical features with hantavirus infection and in many cases neither of these diagnosis could be confirmed. We investigate whether some of the children hospitalized with suspected dengue could indeed have been hantavirus infections. In this prospective study children hospitalized with suspected dengue were tested fo

"So we started talking about a beach in Barbados": visualization practices and needle phobia.

Needle phobia is a relatively common condition that, because it involves fear of a clinical procedure, often deals a 'double blow' to sufferers. Not only can it affect their general health care seeking behaviors (with avoidance potentially having serious health implications), if and when they present for health care, it often causes them significant physical and mental distress. This paper reports on a specific type of therapeutic practice that health professionals use when injecting their clients who have (undiagnosed) needle phobia, aimed at preventing, or momentarily relieving, their negati
