Surgery for obesity and related diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery2026eng
The growing prevalence of obesity has driven the widespread adoption of metabolic and bariatric surgery, recognized as the most effective treatment for this population. To improve the quality of care, several countries have established metabolic and bariatric surgery registries to track outcomes, guide performance benchmarks, and advocate for changes and healthcare improvements. In the United States, collaboration between the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery led to the creation of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Qua

PURPOSE: With the increasing prevalence of bariatric surgery in adolescents, it remains unclear whether centers specializing in pediatric general surgery or adult bariatric surgery are better equipped to perform these procedures. This study aimed to compare outcomes following pediatric bariatric surgery based on surgical volume.
METHODS: Using the Nationwide Readmissions Database for 2016-2018, all patients aged 10-19 years undergoing bariatric surgery were identified. High-volume hospitals, defined as those in the highest quartile of procedures per year, were analyzed. Outcomes included conv

BACKGROUND: Changes in the skin structure, including the collagen and elastin content, have been reported with massive weight loss (MWL) following bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS) and have been correlated to a higher risk of complications after body-contouring surgery (BCS). This study aimed at comparing the histological characteristics of the skin of patients having surgical MWL (SMWL) post-BMS to those with non-surgical massive weight loss (NSMWL).
METHODS: This prospective study compared the epidermal thickness, and collagen and elastin fibers content in 80 skin biopsies obtained from BCS

There is paucity of data on Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery (ERABS) protocols. This feasibility study reports outcomes of this protocol utilized within a tertiary-referral bariatric centre. Data on consecutive primary procedures (laparoscopic gastric bypasses, sleeve gastrectomies and gastric bands) performed over 9 months within an ERABS protocol were prospectively recorded. Interventions utilized included shortened preoperative fasts, intra-operative humidification, early mobilization and feeding, avoidance of fluid overload, incentive spirometry, use of prokinetics and laxatives.

BACKGROUND: Residual effects from general anesthesia can delay the time until oral intake and ambulation. Reversal with Sugammadex has been shown to improve outcomes and decrease post-operative nausea and vomiting. The benefits amongst the bariatric population have not been ascertained. We hypothesized that the use of Sugammadex for reversal will decrease the length of stay (LOS).
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This is a single center retrospective review of 961 patients who underwent elective bariatric surgery from January 2023 to January 2025. Inclusion criteria were any patient undergoing electiv

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how individuals in the community who qualify for bariatric surgery perceive it and how this affects their likelihood to consider it for themselves. This study is the first qualitative study of a racially and ethnically diverse cohort to understand perceptions of bariatric surgery.
METHODS: We designed a descriptive study to understand attitudes about bariatric surgery. We interviewed 32 individuals who met NIH criteria for bariatric surgery but have never considered bariatric surgery. We purposively sampled to ensure the majority of participants were non-whit

This study analyzes the main advantages and disadvantages of various surgical and endoscopic techniques in bariatric surgery. Screening of foreign and domestic literature with appropriate keywords revealed studies devoted to various treatment approaches in patients with obesity. Thanks to analysis of these publications, it is possible to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic interventions in bariatric surgery. Intraluminal endoscopic approach, in particular endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a modern and minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery in patients with mor

INTRODUCTION: Although numerous studies have examined small bowel obstruction (SBO) post-bariatric surgery, they are limited by single center design. There is limited broad epidemiologic data on incidence of SBO after bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the cumulative incidence of SBO.
METHODS: The SPARCS database was used to identify patients with previous Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) who required surgery for SBO at the time of first diagnosis. We analyzed the incidence of and prognostic indicators of surgery for SBO. Multiv

PURPOSE: Obesity remains a significant public health issue in the Western world, affecting millions of Americans and contributing to chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. In June 2021, the Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide for long-term weight management. While its effectiveness in promoting weight loss has been well-documented, its impact on the field of bariatric surgery remains uncertain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 515 bariatric patients from January 2022 to November 2023. Patients on semaglutide in the preoperative peri

RECOMMENDATIONS 1. HCPs can encourage PLWO who have undergone MBS to participate in and maximise their access to behavioural interventions and allied health services at an MBS centre (Level 2a, Grade B). 2. We suggest that MBS centres communicate a comprehensive care plan to primary HCPs for patients who are discharged, including MBS procedure, emergency contact numbers, annual blood tests required, long-term vitamin and mineral supplements, medications, behavioural interventions, and when to refer back (Level 4, Grade D, Consensus). 3. We suggest that after a PLWO has been discharged from the

With a rising worldwide incidence of obesity, particularly in the young, bariatric surgery offers an effective method of meaningful and sustained weight loss. At present, most bariatric procedures are carried out in women and increasingly in younger age groups. In line with the fertility benefits associated with weight loss, pregnancy after bariatric surgery is now a very common scenario. Although there is limited evidence to support optimal care in this group, most women appear to have good pregnancy outcomes, with reduced rates of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes (GDM). However, rates

The growing epidemic of obesity and the increase in weight loss surgery has led to a resurgence of interest in biliary reflux because anatomical alterations may be refluxogenic. HIDA scan is the least invasive scan with good patient tolerability, sensitivity and reproducibility for the diagnosis of biliary reflux. Patients with more advanced oesophageal lesions have a higher degree of duodenal reflux. It has been shown in animal models and in vitro that there is more Barrett's and dysplasia with duodenal reflux. There are two cases of post-OAGB malignancy reported in 20 years, both without cor

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery procedures are the most successful and durable treatment for morbid obesity. Hemorrhage represents a life-threatening complication, occurring in 1.3-1.7% of bariatric surgeries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined patients undergoing Bariatric Surgery from July 2017 to June 2020 (Group A) and those operated from July 2020 to June 2022 (Group B) in our Department. Starting from July 2020 we have implemented intraoperative measures to prevent postoperative bleeding, increasing mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 30% compared to preoperative and reducing the pneumoperito

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is a widely used treatment option for obesity that often provides long-term weight control and health benefits. Although a growing number of women are becoming pregnant after bariatric surgery, only a few population-based studies have assessed the impact thereof on perinatal outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between bariatric surgery and adverse perinatal outcomes in pregnant women and to examine whether the risk for adverse perinatal outcomes is modified by the postsurgery weight, gestational weight gain, type of bariatric surgery,

Type 2 diabetes is primarily managed with lifestyle modifications, self-monitoring of blood glucose, and medication. The goal is to maintain A1C less than 7% in most patients and prevent damage to other organs such as the kidneys and heart. Patients who are obese and cannot achieve normal blood glucose levels despite diet, exercise, and multiple medications may be considered for bariatric surgery. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy have been shown to improve A1C, reduce weight, and reduce the number of medications patients need for diabetes management. Comorbiditi
