Bartonella henselae, a facultative intracellular bacterium, has been known as the agent of cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis hepatis, endocarditis, and bacteremic syndrome in humans. Bartonella species can cause intraerythrocytic infections and have been isolated from the bloodstream of patients by several methods. It was demonstrated that B. bacilliformis and B. quintana infect human endothelial cells and human erythrocytes and B. henselae infects erythrocytes of cats. The aim of this study was to investigate through transmission electron microscopy whether B. henselae inf

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae infections are closely related to numerous clinical infections of growing interest in Spain. Since immunosuppressed patients are a potential risk group for infection by this bacteria, the aim of the present was to study the seroepidemiology of B. henselae infection in a risk group (patients with HIV infection) and in a control group (donors).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In October, 1997, antibodies versus B. henselae were determined at different dilutions (cut off > or = 1:64) by immunofluorescence in 52 patients with HIV infection and 85 donors. An epidemiologic stu

Phylogenetic sister clades Bartonella and Brucella within the order Rhizobiales present some common biological characteristics as well as evident differences in adaptations to their mammalian reservoirs. We reviewed published data on Bartonella and Brucella infections in wild carnivores to compare the ecology of these bacteria in relatively similar host environments. Arthropod vectors are the main mechanism for Bartonella species transmission between mammalian hosts. The role of arthropods in transmission of Brucella remains disputed, however experimental studies and reported detection of Bruc

Bartonella species are zoonotic pathogens, and infections in cats are common. However, prevalence in cats in Southern Germany is still unknown. Therefore, prevalence of Bartonella species DNA in blood of 479 Southern German cats was determined using a previously published conventional PCR targeting a fragment of the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region. Associations between Bartonella bacteraemia, housing conditions, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) status, including progressive, regressive and abortive FeLV infection, were evaluated using Fisher's exact t

INTRODUCTION: Laboratory diagnosis of cat scratch disease (CSD) is based on the determination of specific antibodies anti-Bartonella henselae by different techniques. The CDC recommends IgG by immunofluorescent assay (IFA) as the gold standard.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy and diagnostic utility of anti-B.henselae IgM by IFA for CSD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Anti-B. henselae IgG was determined in serum of 108 patients with CSD suspicion; in addition, specific IgM was determined separately and blindly by two thoroughly trained laboratory professionals. We calculated sensitivity (S), spec

Within the last 15 years, several bacteria of the genus Bartonella were recognized as zoonotic agents in humans and isolated from various mammalian reservoirs. Based on either isolation of the bacterium or PCR testing, eight Bartonella species or subspecies have been recognized as zoonotic agents, including B. henselae, B. elizabethae, B. grahamii, B. vinsonii subsp. arupensis, B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii, B. grahamii, B. washoensis and more recently B. koehlerae. The present manuscript reviews the factors associated with the emergence of these zoonotic pathogens, including better diagnostic

Myocarditis and pericarditis are uncommon complications of human rickettsial, ehrlichial and Bartonella infections. Myocardial inflammation usually occurs in the setting of acute disseminated infection. Organisms associated with myocarditis include: Rickettsia rickettsii, R. conorii, Orientia tsutsugamushi, Coxiella burnetii, Anaplasma phagocytophila (the causative agent of Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis) and Bartonella henselae. Pericarditis has been described in the setting of R. conorii and Coxiella burnetii infections. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathologic characteristics, cli

Recent advancements and developments in molecular biotechnology have allowed more precise reclassification of many microorganisms. With the use of these new taxonomy tools, several organisms previously thought to belong to other genera have been recently described as bartonellae. Of the 11 organisms now described as Bartonella spp., only four have been shown to be pathogenic for humans. Table 1 lists the four Bartonella human pathogens along with the their known epidemiology and the scope and range of disease associated with each. All are now considered to be bacteria and can be grown on blood

The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence against Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana among a risk group, patients with HIV infection, and to identify the epidemiological factors involved. Our data indicate that the prevalence of Bartonella infection among HIV-infected patients is much greater than that in the healthy population of the same area and that Bartonella infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients with HIV disease.

Bartonella bovis is commonly detected in cattle. One B. bovis strain was recently isolated from a cow with endocarditis in the USA, suggesting its role as an animal pathogen. In the present study, we investigated bartonella infections in 893 cattle from five countries (Kenya, Thailand, Japan, Georgia, and Guatemala) and 103 water buffaloes from Thailand to compare the prevalence of the infection among different regions and different bovid hosts. We developed a multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) scheme based on nine loci (16S rRNA, gltA, ftsZ, groEL, nuoG, ribC, rpoB, ssrA, and ITS) to compare

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Babesia and Bartonella species co-infections in patients with chronic, nonspecific illnesses have continued to challenge and change the collective medical understanding of "individual pathogen" vector-borne infectious disease dynamics, pathogenesis and epidemiology. The objective of this case series is to provide additional molecular documentation of Babesia odocoilei infection in humans in the Americas and to emphasize the potential for co-infection with a Bartonella species.
METHODS: The development of improved and more sensitive molecular diagnostic techniques,

Cardiovascular disease is still the major cause of death worldwide despite the remarkable progress in its prevention and treatment. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have recently emerged as key players of vascular repair and regenerative medicine applied to cardiovascular disease. A large amount of effort has been put into discovering the factors that could aid or impair the number and function of EPCs, and also into characterizing these cells at the molecular level in order to facilitate their therapeutic applications in vascular disease. Interestingly, the major cardiovascular risk factor

Peliosis hepatis is a vasculoproliferative disorder of the liver with infectious and noninfectious causes. In humans and dogs, Bartonella henselae has been linked to peliosis hepatis. Although domestic cats are the natural reservoir of B. henselae and although peliosis hepatis is common in this species, an association between this condition and infection with B. henselae has never been investigated in cats. In this study, 26 cases of peliosis hepatis in cats were tested for B. henselae infection by nested polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. The authors failed to detect B. hense

Bartonella and Babesia infections and the association with cattle breed and age as well as tick species infesting selected cattle herds in Taiwan were investigated. Blood samples were collected from 518 dairy cows and 59 beef cattle on 14 farms and 415 ticks were collected from these animals or in a field. Bartonella and Babesia species were isolated and/or detected in the cattle blood samples and from a selected subset (n=254) of the ticks either by culture or DNA extraction, PCR testing and DNA sequence analysis. Bartonella bovis was isolated from a dairy cow and was detected in 25 (42.4%) b

The epidemiology of Bartonella infections in Richardson's ground squirrels (Spermophilus richardsonii) was studied at multiple sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, from 2002 to 2004. The overall prevalence of Bartonella infection was 48%. Juvenile squirrels were significantly more likely to be infected with Bartonella than were adults (58% and 37%, respectively), and juvenile animals also were significantly more likely to have high levels of bacteremia compared to adult animals. Prevalence of Bartonella infection appeared to decrease with age; only 24% of animals known to be > or = 2 yr old were inf

To investigate the role of B. henselae in patients with symptoms suggesting neuroborreliosis, serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples were tested with serological and PCR methods. Among 17 examined patients, in 12 cases Borrelia burgdorferi infections were detected, in 1 case Bartonella henselae infection was ascertained, and in two patients mixed B. burgdorferi and B. henselae infections were found. These results indicate that mixed infections should be taken into consideration in establishing diagnosis of neurological disorders. Further study of this conclusion is needed.
