The cochleogram is commonly used for illustrating hair cell loss after insult, yet standardized procedures for plotting either individual or averaged cochleograms are lacking despite more than 40 years of use. Due to the intra-species variation in basilar membrane (BM) length, it is important that length is plotted on the cochleogram in percent and not millimeter. It is also of interest to correlate the location of lesion to frequency by using a frequency-place equation. However, there is no consensus as which equation is most suitable for the species under study. This is an important issue si

The signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) is one of the most important signaling molecule transducing signals from the cell surface in response to cytokines or growth factors. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) results in production of cytokines and growth factors in the CSF. We here investigated whether this signaling molecule is activated in the rat basilar artery after SAH. In a rat single-hemorrhage model of SAH, basilar arteries were obtained at various times until 7days after SAH. Western blot analysis with phosphorylated (p)-STAT1 at Tyr(701), p-STAT1 at Ser(727), STAT1,

Georg von Békésy observed that the onset times of responses to brief-duration stimuli vary as a function of distance from the stapes, with basal regions starting to move earlier than apical ones. He noticed that the speed of signal propagation along the cochlea is slow when compared with the speed of sound in water. Fast traveling waves have been recorded in the cochlea, but their existence is interpreted as the result of an experiment artifact. Accounts of the timing of vibration onsets at the base of the cochlea generally agree with Békésy's results. Some authors, however, have argued that t

A model is presented which is a simple representation of cochlear micromechanics in the lizard and mammal. The model is a linear, time-invariant mechanical system, consisting of two coupled mechanical filters. It is capable of a sharply tuned first and second filter, consistent with the sharply tuned basilar membrane and auditory nerve fibers in the mammal. When parameters are adjusted for the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus), the model generates a sharply tuned second filter without a sharply tuned first filter. In the alligator lizard, the auditory nerve fibers are sharply tuned

Most sounds of interest consist of complex, time-dependent admixtures of tones of diverse frequencies and variable amplitudes. To detect and process these signals, the ear employs a highly nonlinear, adaptive, real-time spectral analyzer: the cochlea. Sound excites vibration of the eardrum and the three miniscule bones of the middle ear, the last of which acts as a piston to initiate oscillatory pressure changes within the liquid-filled chambers of the cochlea. The basilar membrane, an elastic band spiraling along the cochlea between two of these chambers, responds to these pressures by conduc

Cerebrovascular disease is a prevalent condition among the elderly, with its incidence steadily rising. The basilar artery is a critical cerebral vessel that supplies the pons, cerebellum, posterior brain regions, and inner ear. Potassium (K+) channel activity plays a significant role in determining vascular tone by regulating the cell membrane potential. Activation of inward rectifying K+ (Kir) channels, like other K+ channels, leads to cell membrane hyperpolarization and vasodilation. In this study, freshly isolated smooth muscle cells from the basilar artery were used to record Kir currents

Measurements have shown that the sound-induced motion of free-standing stereocilia of hair cells in the alligator lizard cochlea exhibits tonotopically organized frequency selectivity that is correlated with the geometry of the stereociliary tuft. We propose a model in which basilar-membrane motion causes vibration of the receptor organ which drags the stereocilia back and forth through the endolymph. The stereociliary tuft is represented as a rigid rod attached to the cuticular plate by a compliant hinge. Viscous and inertial forces exerted by the endolymph on the rod are computed approximate

No adequate theory for the signal-transmission properties of the peripheral auditory system exists for any vertebrate ear. Because the mammalian ear seems to pose conceptual and technical problems that complicate the development of an adequate theory, it is worthwhile to investigate simpler ears. The ear of the alligator lizard is simpler than mammalian ears in several respects: the motion of the basilar membrane is approximately independent of longitudinal position and is approximately linearly related to the sound pressure at the tympanic membrane; in a large region of the cochlea the hair c

Forty-six cases of basilar skull fractures in children were reviewed to determine the incidence of CNS infection following injury and the possible value of antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis. The clinical course of the children who were treated with antibiotics was compared with that of patients who received no antimicrobial therapy. Included in the study were patients with hemotympanum alone or with hemotympanum plus additional clinical or roentgenographic signs of basilar skull fracture; patients with tympanic membrane perforation without otorrhea but with blood in the auditory canal; and childr

Cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is because of smooth muscle contraction, although the mechanism of this contraction remains unresolved. Membrane potential controls the contractile state of arterial myocytes by gating voltage-sensitive calcium channels and is in turn primarily controlled by K(+) ion conductance through several classes of K(+) channels. We characterized the role of inwardly rectifying K(+) (K(IR)) channels in vasospasm. Vasospasm was created in dogs using the double-hemorrhage model of SAH. Electrophysiological, real-time quantitative reverse-transcriptase

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in the currents of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) in smooth muscle cells of basilar artery in a rabbit model of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into five groups: sham (C), normal (N), 24 hours (S1), 48 hours (S2) and 72 hours (S3) after SAH. Non-heparinized autologous arterial blood (1 ml/kg) was injected into the cisterna magna to create SAH after intravenous anesthesia, and 1 ml/kg of saline was injected into cisterna magna in the sham group. Rabbits in group N received no injections. B

BACKGROUND: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) pathway modulates basilar membrane motion and auditory nerve activity on both a fast (10-100 ms) and a slow (10-100 s) time scale in guinea pigs. The slow MOC modulation of cochlear activity is postulated to aide in protection against acoustic trauma. However in humans, the existence and functional roles of slow MOC effects remain unexplored.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: By employing contralateral noise at moderate to high levels (68 and 83 dB SPL) as an MOC reflex elicitor, and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) as a non-invasive probe of

Blast overpressure of sufficient intensity can produce injury to various organ systems. Unprotected ears result in the auditory system being the most susceptible. The injuries to the auditory system include: rupture of the tympanic membrane, dislocation or fracture of the ossicular chain, and damage to the sensory structures on the basilar membrane. All these injuries can be characterized as a form of mechanical damage to the affected structure. Injury to the sensory structures on the basilar membrane leads to temporary and permanent loss of hearing sensitivity. The temporary component of the

Input-output functions on the basilar membrane of the cochlea show a strong compressive nonlinearity at midrange levels for frequencies close to the characteristic frequency of a given place. This article shows how many different phenomena can be explained as consequences of this nonlinearity, including the "excess" masking produced when 2 nonsimultaneous maskers are combined, the nonlinear growth of forward masking with masker level, the influence of component phase on the effectiveness of complex forward maskers, changes in the ability to detect increments and decrements with level, temporal

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured in chickens before and after exposure to a 525-Hz pure tone (120 dB SPL, 48 h). The exposure caused extensive hair cell loss and destroyed the tectorial membrane along the abneural edge of the basilar papilla in the low-to-mid-frequency region of the cochlea. Although the lesion was restricted, DPOAEs were greatly depressed at all frequencies immediately after the exposure. The high-frequency DPOAEs gradually recovered to preexposure values after the exposure; however, there was little or no improvement in DPOAEs at test frequenci

A 3-month-old, 9.9 kg, male pit bull cross was referred for evaluation of collapse. A left basilar systolic heart murmur graded V/VI and a grade IV/VI right basilar systolic heart murmur were ausculted. Echocardiography showed severe pulmonic stenosis characterized by annular hypoplasia, leaflet thickening, and leaflet fusion. After 1 month of atenolol therapy, a pulmonic valve balloon valvuloplasty procedure was performed, and the intra-operative right ventricular pressure was reduced by 43%. Echocardiography, performed the following day, showed apparent rupture of a pulmonary valve leaflet a

Post-mumps and post-measles hearing losses are a result of the destruction of Corti's organ. Both the basilar and the Reissner membranes are unimpaired. In 11 subjects with post-mumps (8 cases) and post-measles (3 cases) unilateral anacusis, DEOE with a mean amplitude lower than that of the contralateral normal ear with the same sensation level were observed with 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz tone-bursts and air conduction stimulation. These findings lend credit to the view that DEOE could in part be produced by a passive intracochlear mechanism, probably a consequence of the basilar membrane travelling wa

To overcome the inherent deficiencies of hearing aids, implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have emerged as a new treatment for hearing loss. However, clinical results show that the IMEHD performance varies with its transducer's stimulating site. To numerically analyze the influence of the piezoelectric transducer's stimulating sites on its hearing compensation performance, we constructed a human ear finite element model and confirmed its validity. Based on this finite element model, the displacement stimulation, which simulates the piezoelectric transducer's stimulation, was applie

This paper presents the development of a piezoelectric artificial cochlea (PAC) device capable of analyzing vibratory signal inputs and converting them into electrical signal outputs without an external power source by mimicking the function of human cochlea within an audible frequency range. The PAC consists of an artificial basilar membrane (ABM) part and an implantable packaged part. The packaged part provides a liquid environment through which incoming vibrations are transmitted to the membrane part. The membrane part responds to the transmitted signal, and the local area of the ABM part v

Sensorineural hearing loss, which stems primarily from the failure of mechanosensory hair cells, changes the traveling waves that transmit acoustic signals along the cochlea. However, the connection between cochlear mechanics and the amplificatory function of hair cells remains unclear. Using an optical technique that permits the targeted inactivation of prestin, a protein of outer hair cells that generates forces on the basilar membrane, we demonstrate that these forces interact locally with cochlear traveling waves to achieve enormous mechanical amplification. By perturbing amplification in
