Irukandji stings are a leading occupational health and safety issue for marine industries in tropical Australia and an emerging problem elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. Their mild initial sting frequently results in debilitating illness, involving signs of sympathetic excess including excruciating pain, sweating, nausea and vomiting, hypertension and a feeling of impending doom; some cases also experience acute heart failure and pulmonary oedema. These jellyfish are typically small and nearly invisible, and their infestations are generally mysterious, making them scary to the gener

The research summarises 10 years of beach litter studies on the southern Baltic coast. Beach litter abundance in 2020-2024 was related to results from 2015 to 2019. Litter was collected from 15 sections (1 km) in four seasons yearly. The changes and trends in marine litter composition and sources were identified, taking into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of the Single Use Plastic (SUP) Directive (EU, 2019). In 2020-2024 litter classified as artificial polymer material was dominant along the studied beaches (64.3 %) with cigarette butts being the most common

Recreational water use is an important source of human enteric illness. Enhanced (episodic) surveillance of natural recreational waters as a supplement to beach monitoring can enrich our understanding of human health risks. From 2011 to 2013, water sampling was undertaken at recreational sites on a watershed in eastern Canada. This study compared the prevalence and associations of human enteric pathogens and fecal indicator organisms. Beach water samples had lower pathogen presence than those along the main river, due to different pollution sources and the hydrological disposition. Pathogen pr

A Water Exclosure Treatment System (WETS) is developed and installed to minimize the occurrence of beach closures due to algae and Escherchia coli (E. coli) in an inland lake. WETS consists of an "exclosure" sub-system with a five-sided polypropylene, barrier that excludes offshore lake contaminated water from the swimming area. Inside the exclosure, water is pumped to a portable filtration-ultraviolet treatment sub-system with three components. First, heavy debris like aquatic plants are removed through a strainer. Second, fine particles are removed through a sand filter and backwashing is au

Bacterial resistance is a rising problem all over the world. Many studies have showed that beach sands can contain higher concentration of microorganisms and represent a risk to public health. This paper aims to evaluate the densities and resistance to antimicrobials of Escherichia coli strains, isolated from seawater and samples. The hypothesis is that microorganisms show higher densities in contaminated beach sands and more antimicrobial resistance than the water column. Density, distribution, and antimicrobial resistance of bacteria E. coli were evaluate in seawater and sands from two recre

In this work, two field campaigns were performed in July 2008 (wet season) and March 2009 (dry season) to produce original data on the concentration, partition and distribution of mercury and butyltin compounds along the tropical Bach Dang Estuary located in North Vietnam (Haiphong, Red River Delta). The results demonstrate that mercury and butyltin speciation in the surface waters of this type of tropical estuary is greatly affected by the drastic changes in the seasonal conditions. During high river discharge in the wet season, there was a large estuarine input of total Hg and tributyltin, w

We report the first study on the occurrence of high-level aminoglycoside-resistant (HLAR) Enterococci in coastal bathing waters and beach sand in Malaysia. None of the encountered isolates were resistant to high levels of gentamicin (500 μg/mL). However, high-level resistance to kanamycin (2,000 μg/mL) was observed in 14.2 % of tested isolates, the highest proportions observed being among beach sand isolates. High-level resistance to kanamycin was higher among Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium than Enterococcus spp. Chi-square analysis showed no significant association between res

Antibiotic resistance has become a global and multidimensional problem, where the capacity for environmental dispersion is one of the most important aspects. Estuaries are usually hotspots for anthropogenic impact because they receive effluents from wastewater treatment plants. This constitutes a potential health risk when they are used for recreational activities. Río de la Plata is an estuarine system in South America, located south of Uruguay, on whose western margin lies Montevideo, the capital of this country. In the coastal area of Montevideo, the estuary receives effluents from the city

Waterborne pathogens and their associated diseases are major threats to public health, and surveillance of pathogens and identification of the sources of pollution are imperative for preventing infections. However, simultaneously quantitative detection of multiple pathogens and pollution sources in water environments is the major challenge. In this study, we developed and validated a highly sensitive (mostly >80%) and highly specific (>99%) high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) approach, which could simultaneously quantify 68 marker genes of 33 human pathogens and 23 fecal markers of 10 h

We present a 23-year-old married couple who died by accidental burial in a beach sand hole. The victims fell into a hole that had been covered with a plastic sheet, and were buried suddenly by sand that had been piled on the top of the sheet. At autopsy, facial congestion; petechial hemorrhages in the conjunctivae and the oral mucosa; skin petechiae at the face, neck and upper chest; congestion and hemorrhages in the cervical lymph nodes; and some minor hemorrhages in the cervical muscles were found in both victims. Little sand was evident in the airway, while sand debris was found in the oral

Increasing economic and recreational opportunities, attractive scenery and a perception of a better quality of life are luring people to the coast. Unfortunately, these activities together with the commensurate increase in population in the area inevitably result in pollution of coastal waters with excessive microorganisms and other pollutants. Microbial pollutants not only contaminate the coastal water but also aquatic food sources, thus posing a health risk to consumers. Fish is a major source of protein in Cameroon, especially in the coastal areas. In this study, we investigated the microbi

Anthropogenic contamination of beaches in the south of Brazil was assessed by detection of Escherichia coli, human mastadenovirus species C (HAdV-C) and F (HAdV-F) and hepatitis E virus (HEV). Sampling was carried out in October (2016), and in January, April and July (2017). Water, sediment, sea surface microlayer (SML), bivalves, and air sentinel samples were evaluated. Quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) was used to estimate the probability of swimmer infection. HAdV-C was present in 26% of the samples, for both qPCR and viral isolation. The highest rates of detection in geno

Fifteen cohorts of healthy bathers were recruited at four Lake Leman beaches between 3 July and 23 August 1996 to assess the public health importance of cercarial dermatitis in Geneva, Switzerland. Telephone follow-up interviews were carried out after 2-7 days. Overall, 153 bathers out of 555 reported probable cercarial dermatitis at follow-up. Median daily attack rate was 27.7% (2.2-57.7%). Of the cases, 11.1% noticed more than 30 skin lesions, 19.6% described severe itching, 50.3% used a drug treatment, 3.9% visited a doctor and 15% claimed they would reduce their bathing activities. Coastal ecosystems are vital for biodiversity but are increasingly threatened by urbanisation and pollution, which significantly alter local microbial communities. This study assessed bacterial diversity and functional profiles in urban and island beaches in Belém, Brazil. Urban beaches showed significantly higher microbial diversity and evenness, alongside functional plasticity due to pollutant input, while island beaches hosted more specialised and stable communities. Taxonomic analysis revealed the significant enrichment of opportunistic genera such as Comamonas, Clostridium and Paenibacill

The primordial radionuclides present in beach sands serve as important indicators for understanding the physical and geochemical processes that influence the ocean floor and the marine geological environment. The present research work reports the study on the natural radioactivity present in the beach sands and ambient radiation levels in the beaches of Visakhapatnam, eastern coast of India. The concentrations of primordial radionuclides 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40 K in beach sand samples were measured using the high-purity germanium (HPGe) based gamma spectrometry system. The range of concentr

BACKGROUND: Recreational coastal waters are widely used for leisure activities and require systematic microbiological monitoring to ensure the safety of bathers. However, such surveillance has traditionally focused on fecal indicator bacteria, whereas fungal communities remain largely neglected by regulatory and governmental agencies.
AIMS: This study aimed to identify 18 yeasts isolated from three tourist beaches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and to evaluate their antifungal susceptibility, biofilm-forming capacity and growth in saline conditions.
METHODS: The molecular identification of the i

The water quality on recreational beaches is constantly monitored. However, given that beachgoers often spend more time in contact with the sand than the seawater, it is essential to also regularly assess beach sand quality. In this study, 34 beach sand samples were collected in seven locations along the south shore of the Baltic Sea (Europe) between 2022 and 2023. The samples were obtained from recreational beaches with significant anthropogenic pressure. Since the use of new chemicals is widespread, it is imperative to not only monitor known contaminants but also to actively search for the p

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a parasitic infection most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas. However, with the ease and increase of foreign travel to many countries around the world, the infection is not limited to these areas. CLM is an erythematous, serpiginous infection with skin eruption caused by percutaneous penetration of the larvae to the skin. In this report, a case diagnosed as imported CLM after an Amazon trip and treated with albendazole was presented. A 36 year-old male patient admitted to infectious diseases clinic with intense itching, erythematous, raised, stre
