Fungal antagonism shapes microbial community structure and provides an ecological basis for biological control. Although mycoviruses have been implicated in fungal antagonism, their effects are generally attributed to indirect modulation of resident host physiology. Here, we show that a mycovirus can function as a mobile effector of antagonism through cross-taxonomic transmission, representing the first documentation of viral transfer from an entomopathogenic/endophytic fungus (Beauveria) to a phytopathogenic fungus (Sclerotinia) via a plant‑mediated route. We characterized Beauveria brongniar

Anti-Beauveria bassiana activity of aqueous fecal extracts from conventional German cockroaches [Blattella germanica (L.)] was detected, but was not detected in samples from germ-free German cockroaches. Subsequently, bacterial strain BGI-14 was isolated from the gut of conventional German cockroaches and was identified as Pseudomonas reactans based on 16S rDNA sequence. The strain BGI-14 not only inhibited the germination of conidia, but also inhibited the growth of B. bassiana hyphae. Further studies demonstrated that B. bassiana infections in German cockroaches orally treated with the extra

Cabbage experiences substantial yield reductions due to diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) infestation. Recurrent use of insecticides has led to insecticide resistance, necessitating the development of sustainable biocontrol strategies. This study involves the morpho-molecular characterization of Beauveria bassiana isolates from diverse locations. B. bassiana NBAIR-Bb5a exhibited the rapid mycelial growth (87.43 mm) with highest conidial germination rate (94.43%), and notable insecticidal enzymatic activities (chitinase, protease and lipase). Chagas disease is endemic to the Americas and is transmitted by blood-feeding kissing bugs. We evaluated the insecticidal potential of a fungus (Beauveria bassiana strain Pr-11) against Triatoma infestans, an important vector in South America. This fungal species was isolated from a locust (Schistocerca piceifrons) that inhabits the Central Andes region of Peru. Ten days post inoculation, this strain induced high insect mortality (97%) at low fungal concentrations (2 × 107 conidia/ml) at 70% relative humidity. The Pr-11 strain outperformed reference strain CCBLE-216 B. bassiana, provided by th

The eukaryotic calcineurin (CN) pathway comprising catalytic A (CnA) and regulatory B subunits (CnB) is crucial for many biological processes but functionally unexplored in entomopathogenic fungi. Here, we characterise three CN subunits (CnA1, CnA2 and CnB) and a downstream CN-responsive zinc finger transcription factor (Crz1) in Beauveria bassiana. CN-mediated phosphatase activity decreased by 16-38 % in all deletion mutants compared with wild type. Growth and conidiation were most defective in ΔcnB, which showed a large proportion of abnormally branched germlings but were less defective in Δ

BACKGROUND: Several entomopathogenic fungal (EPF) species can colonise and establish symbiotic relationships with plants as endophytes, which affects crop growth under elevated carbon dioxide (eCO₂) concentrations. However, how EPF facilitates eCO2 in plants is poorly understood, especially at the transcriptional and metabolic levels. Here, the authors used transcriptomics and metabolomics to examine the effects of a widely used EPF, Beauveria bassiana, on maize growth under eCO2, and how it regulated enzyme activity and endogenous hormone metabolism.
RESULTS: Beauveria bassiana colonisation

BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) develop antagonistic strategies to compete with bacteria on the host cuticle surface, facilitating fungal invasion of their host. However, the presence of fungal species on host cuticles and the mechanisms by which EPF compete against cuticular fungi remain unclear.
RESULTS: Beauveria bassiana is a ubiquitous entomopathogenic fungus with significant potential for biological control of the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens. In this study, we demonstrated that three yeast species are dominant on the cuticle surface of N. lugens: Kurtzmaniella quercitr

Predatory mites and invertebrate-pathogenic fungi are important biological control tools for managing populations of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in horticultural field crops. Here, we evaluated strategies for the combined use of a mite-pathogenic strain of Beauveria bassiana and Neoseiulus californicus to suppress T. urticae populations on sweet pepper plants. First, we compared the performance of both biocontrol agents, applied alone or in combination, under greenhouse conditions. A decline in T. urticae populations was observed 7 days after the release of the predatory

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite in hens and has been considered an important threat to the egg production industry. This study evaluated an alternative to manage poultry red mite populations as a complement to conventional chemical treatments and other control strategies in poultry houses. A simple autoinoculation device prepared with corrugated cardboard (CB) or loofah sponge (LS) as inert supports to anchor Beauveria bassiana conidia was used to aggregate and infect mites from infested poultry houses. In the laboratory, mites gathered inside the tra

Microsporum canis is one of the most important dermatophyte causing tinea corporis and tinea capitis and its biofilm-form has a poor therapeutic response. The biosurfactant production by entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) has not been reported yet. The study aimed to investigate the potential usage of the EPF biosurfactant in the eradication of an ex vivo biofilm of Microsporum canis (M. canis) for the first time. An entomopathogenic fungus was isolated from the fungal-infected Vespa orientalis wasp and identified as Beauveria bassiana (MN173375). Chemical characterization revealed the lipopeptide n

The effect of formulation, fungal concentration, type and seasonal changes on the mortality of the tick Amblyomma variegatum was investigated. A previous study demonstrated high pathogenicity of strains of the fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae against the ticks Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum (Kaaya et al. J Invertebr Pathol 1996; 67: 15-20). The present study was undertaken to explore possible additive or synergistic effects of the two fungi on A. variegatum. The effects of oil and water formulations at different concentrations of each fungus and combin

Sericulture is an agro based industry that involves cultivating mulberry plants as feed for silkworm larvae. Silkworm growth and production is affected due to microbial diseases, pest, abiotic stress and quality of mulberry leaves. Protecting the silkworms from diseases and providing high quality diet to larvae is essential for increased silk production. White muscardine, disease caused by Beauveria bassiana, reduces silk production. The control measures include, spraying 2% formalin, 25% chloride dioxide which also affect larval growth. In this study for enhancing the growth and improving the

Laboratory research in Ghana demonstrated the effectiveness of an isolate of Beauveria bassiana (IMI 389521) from the United Kingdom against the larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), a major pest of stored maize. The minimum effective concentration, following artificial infestation trials on maize, was between 109 and 1010 cfu/kg maize. Before moving out to village-level control, a major requirement was to determine if the product could effect control in artificially infested maize held under real environmental conditions in several locations in Ghana. The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle plays a pivotal role in fungal physiological processes. In this study, two TCA-cycle related enzyme were functionally analyzed in a model entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, including NAD-dependent lactate dehydrogenase (BbLdh) and malate dehydrogenase (BbMdh1 and 2). Domain annotation indicated all these enzymes contained an Ldh_1 domain. Functional analyses indicated that BbLdh and BbMdh2 had differential contributions to fungal growth, development, stress tolerance, virulence, and mycosis. Notably, BbLdh played a more important role in fungal inter

The oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is increasingly recognized as a significant pest of honey bees in southern Europe and other dry sub-humid regions, where it causes colony losses, disrupts foraging activity, and may contribute to pathogen circulation among apiaries. Current control measures, based mainly on trapping and nest destruction, are labor-intensive and raise concerns for non-target organisms, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives. Entomopathogenic fungi represent promising candidates due to their insecticidal activity and potential for horizontal transmission within

The poppy stem gall wasp, Iraella luteipes (Thompson) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), is one of the main pests of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum L., an economically important pharmaceutical crop cultivated worldwide. In a previous study, we obtained from I. luteipes larvae a strain of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) that can become established endophytically in opium poppy plants. A field experiment was conducted to study the ability of this B. bassiana strain to provide systemic protection against damage by I. luteipes in opium poppy in southern Spain f

Enhancing environmental adaptability and virulence is crucial for improving the biocontrol potential of Beauveria bassiana, a filamentous entomopathogen widely employed for biological pest control in agriculture and forestry. It was reported that DnaJ proteins play important and distinct roles in fungal growth, conidiation, environmental adaptation, and virulence. However, apart from Mas5 and Mdj1, the functions of other DnaJ proteins in B. bassiana remain largely unexplored. In this study, the functions of two DnaJ homologs of Scj1 and Djp1 in B. bassiana were characterized through multi-phen

House flies (Musca domestica L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) are challenging pests to control. Biological control using Carcinops pumilio beetles may help to reduce house fly populations. However, it is unknown if C. pumilio beetles are compatible with Beauveria bassiana, another house fly biological control option. Five strains of commercially available (GHA, HF23, and L90) and newly discovered (NFH10 and PSU1) strains of B. bassiana were used to test the comparative susceptibility of adult house flies and adult C. pumilio using different laboratory exposure methods. Adult house flies were susceptibl
