Effect of population structure and size on aggregation behavior of Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

The bed bug, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), occurs in aggregations until the conditions are no longer beneficial, leading to dispersal. Active and passive bed bug dispersal causes migrations from main aggregations either within a room, from room to room within a building, or from building to building. Because bed bug movement is an important factor in the spread of infestations, we wanted to determine how population structure and size affect bed bug aggregations. Engorged bed bugs were placed in glass petri dish arenas at varying densities, sex ratios, and population compositions

Development of a lateral flow test for bed bug detection.

Lateral flow strip tests are a cost-effective method for detecting specific proteins in biological samples, which can be performed in the field without specialized expertise. While most recognizable in the pregnancy tests, there are many other applications for lateral flow strip technology. The pest control industry has increasingly emphasized the importance of pest monitoring to reduce unnecessary applications, focus interventions into locations with active pest infestations, and to develop records of pest infestation. Due to their cryptic behavior, the detection of bed bugs often necessitate

Mite and Bed Bug Infections.

Patients with suspected bites or skin rashes regularly present to their primary care physician. Common mite infections encountered in the primary care office include scabies, chiggers, grain itch, and allergic responses from dust mites. In fact, scabies is one of the 50 most prevalent diseases worldwide. Bed bugs are also becoming increasingly common, living in dark crevices, such as mattresses, feeding at night, and causing a maculopapular immune mediated allergic skin response in humans. Proper identification of the mite or bed bug is essential to guide treatment and eradication.

Phylogenetic analyses of bat-associated bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae: Cimicinae and Cacodminae) indicate two new species close to Cimex lectularius.

BACKGROUND: Bats are regarded as the primary (ancestral) hosts of bugs of the family Cimicidae. The historically and economically most important species in the family is the common bedbug (Cimex lectularius), because of its worldwide occurrence and association with humans. This molecular-phylogenetic study was initiated in order to expand the knowledge on the phylogeny of cimicid bugs of bats, by investigating samples from Hungary, Romania (representing central-eastern Europe) and two further countries (South Africa and Vietnam). RESULTS: Altogether 216 cimicid bugs were collected (73 Ci. lec

Bed Bugs: Prevalence in Low-Income Communities, Resident's Reactions, and Implementation of a Low-Cost Inspection Protocol.

We examined bed bug prevalence in 2,372 low-income apartments within 43 buildings in four New Jersey cities using a combination of resident interviews, brief visual inspections, and monitoring with Climbup Insect Interceptors. Infestation rates ranged from 3.8 to 29.5% among the buildings, with an overall infestation rate of 12.3%. Within each apartment, the bed area trapped significantly more bed bugs per trap than the sofa (or upholstered chair) area. African American residents had a proportionally higher number of bed bug infestations than white residents. Women were more likely to report b

Bed Bug Infestation: An Updated Review.

In the past decade, there has been a global resurgence of bed bug infestations, especially in developed countries. Proper awareness and identification of bed bug infestations are essential to guide treatment and eradication. The purpose of this article is to familiarize physicians with bed bug bites so that they can effectively diagnose, treat, and address questions about bed bug bites and infestations. Bed bug bites are often painless. Typical reactions include pruritic, erythematous maculopapules occurring in clusters or in a linear or curvilinear distribution in exposed areas of the body. A

Toxicity and potential utility of ivermectin and moxidectin as xenointoxicants against the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L.

The recent resurgence of the common bed bug Cimex lectularius L. throughout western industrialized nations has been facilitated in part by the insect becoming pesticide-resistant. Novel control strategies, including xenointoxication, should be considered to combat C. lectularius. Ivermectin, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment for several human parasites, and the antiparasitic drug moxidectin, currently being explored in human clinical trials, were evaluated for efficacy against C. lectularius. Results showed that C. lectularius fed on ivermectin or moxidectin blood co

Differentiation in bacterial symbiont growth between insecticide treated and untreated tropical bed bug.

Symbiotic bacteria are closely associated with insect adaptability and survival, particularly in species with nutritionally limited diets. In the tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus, these microbial partners synthesize essential nutrients such as B vitamins and amino acids that are absent from blood meals. The global resurgence of bed bug infestations, fueled by increased international travel and insecticide resistance, has challenged conventional control methods. Microbial symbionts are increasingly suspected to contribute to resistance mechanisms, but their role remains poorly defined. This st

Bed bug preferences for host odor or aggregation odor are differentially modulated by physiological state in various odorscapes.

BACKGROUND: Bed bugs live in an ecologically and spatially restricted indoor habitat comprised of overlapping aggregation and host odors, and they traverse relatively short distances between blood-hosts and aggregation sites. Although many studies demonstrated aggregation or host odor preference respectively, the modulation of bed bug preferences between these divergent odors is poorly understood. Given the recurrent transitions of bed bugs between replete and hungry states, we evaluated the effects of six odorscapes containing aggregation and host skin odors on bed bug preferences. RESULTS:

Semiochemicals modulating bed bug behaviour.

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae, Hemiptera), is obligate haematophagous and can carry pathogens but is not known to transmit diseases to humans in natural settings. Bed bugs are activated and guided by semiochemicals and heat by potential hosts, as well as by an aggregation pheromone when searching for food and home. No sexual pheromone has been detected in bed bugs, which mate through traumatic insemination. First, after mounting, males are able to distinguish between large nymphs, other males, and females. To avoid unwanted traumatic inseminations, nymphs and adults emit an

Molecular characterization and genetic diversity of Wolbachia endosymbionts in bed bugs (Hemiptera; Cimicidae) collected in Paris.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of Wolbachia in field-caught bed bug species in Paris areas. METHODS: The bed bug specimens were captured from various infested localities in Paris and surrounding cities. They belonged to diverse life stages, including egg, nymph, and adult. They were then identified using morphological and molecular approaches. Furthermore, Wolbachia was detected, and its genetic diversity was investigated by conventional PCR of 16S-rRNA and Wolbachia surface protein (wsp) genes. RESULTS: A total of 256 bed bug specimens belonging to various li

Common pediatric infestations: update on diagnosis and treatment of scabies, head lice, and bed bugs.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review will update pediatric providers on the recent data regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of common skin infestations affecting children and adolescents. RECENT FINDINGS: Standard superficial skin biopsy for scabies and the vacuum method for head lice can increase diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. There is growing resistance to some of the traditional treatments for scabies and head lice, and progress has been made in finding newer and potentially more effective treatments, such as oral moxidectin for scabies and abametapir for head lice. Psychological effects of bed bug attacks (Cimex lectularius L.).

BACKGROUND: In some individuals, psychological sequelae resulting from bed bug biting events include nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance (to keep the bugs away), insomnia, anxiety, avoidance behaviors, and personal dysfunction. These symptoms are suggestive of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: We used a previously published PTSD checklist to analyze online blogs and other Internet sites where bed bug postings occur to assess postings for evidence of emotional trauma. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-five postings were read and analyzed, and 110 (81%) of those postings reported psy

Phylogenetic characterization of Wolbachia symbionts infecting Cimex lectularius L. and Oeciacus vicarius Horvath (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Wolbachia symbionts are obligate intracellular bacteria that cause host reproductive alterations in many arthropods and filarial nematodes. We identified Wolbachia symbionts in the cliff swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarious Horvath) and the human bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing using Wolbachia-specific 16S rDNA and FtsZ primers. Phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and maximum parsimony algorithms indicated, with strong support, that (1) Wolbachia infections in these two cimicid hosts form a m

The asymptomatic HB6-Ag carrier: auto- and heterologous perils.

The asympatomatic carrier--usually discovered on offering to be a blood donor--presents a complex health problem which to date has received only "guarded" attention. These carriers may be dangerous, because they can transmit the HBs-Ag not only by parenteral but also by "nonparenteral" means, due to its presence in urine, feces, saliva, tears, semen, vaginal discharge, menstrual flow, breast milk, joint, ascitic and cerebrospinal fluids. The transmission by sexual contact is well established. Inapparent transmission may also occur from insufficient sterilization of instruments, by tatooing, ea

A chromosome-level reference genome for the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, with identification of sex chromosomes.

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a globally distributed pest insect of medical, veterinary, and economic importance. Previous reference genome assemblies for this species were generated from short-read sequencing data, resulting in a ~650 Mb composed of thousands of contigs. Here, we present a haplotype-resolved, chromosome-level reference genome, generated from an adult Harlen strain female specimen. Using PacBio long read and Omni-C proximity sequencing, we generated a 540 Mb genome with 15 chromosomes (13 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes-X1X2) with an N50 > 30 Mb and BUSCO > 90%. Pr
