Viruses and vectors tied to honey bee colony losses.

Commercial beekeepers in the US reported severe colony losses early in 2025, as colonies were being staged for their critical role in the almond pollination season in California. Average reported losses since the preceding spring exceeded 60%, with substantial variation among operations. Many colonies were still actively collapsing in January 2025, at which time pooled and individual samples were collected and then screened for levels of 13 known honey bee pathogens and parasites. Acute bee paralysis virus and other known viral pathogens were found at high levels in pooled bee samples from all

Geographical distribution of pyrethroid resistance mutations in Varroa destructor across Türkiye and a European overview.

Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman (Acari: Varroidae) is of paramount significance in modern beekeeping, with infestations presenting a primary challenge that directly influences colony health, productivity, and overall apicultural sustainability. In order to control this mite, many beekeepers rely on a limited number of approved synthetic acaricides, including the pyrethroids tau-fluvalinate, flumethrin and organophosphate coumaphos. However, the excessive use of these substances has led to the widespread development of resistance in various beekeeping areas globally. In the present study,

Workers of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) reared in small-cell combs in apiary conditions show higher activity of the proteolytic system and lower protein concentrations on the cuticle surface than workers reared in standard-cell combs.

This study is a continuation of innovative research on the impact of the simultaneous use of standard- and small-cell combs in bee colonies on the characteristics of worker bees and bee colonies. The nests of these colonies had two types of combs: small-cell (approximate cell width/size of 4.90 mm) and standard-cell (approximate cell width/size of 5.50 mm). The aim of the study was to compare the activities of proteases and their inhibitors present on the cuticle of workers reared in small-cell combs (SMC workers) and standard-cell combs (STC workers) in colonies kept simultaneously in standar

Chemical residues in declining commercial honey bee colonies.

Following heightened colony losses, we screened 132 colonies from 23 commercial beekeeping operations in the states of Florida and California. We assessed chemical residues, finding beekeeper-applied miticides, followed by fungicides, were in the highest prevalence and concentration in all colony matrices. Insecticides comprised a minority of detections and concentration. Due to their heightened toxicity, insecticides contributed substantially to hazard quotients with one residue, the neonicotinoid imidacloprid, contributing 99.9% to overall HQ. We found both high prevalence and high levels of

Neutralization of bee venom lethality by immune serum antibodies.

The lethal effects of Africanized honey bee venom depend on the absorption of venom delivered during simultaneous sting attacks by large numbers of bees. The hypothesis that antibodies to whole bee venom and bee venom components could neutralize the lethal effect of bee venom was tested. Antibodies from beekeepers and immunized rabbits were incubated with bee venom and neutralization was studied by survival of intravenously injected mice. Beekeeper serum antibodies were found effective in protecting mice challenged with whole venom, and serum from rabbits immunized with phospholipase A2 (PLA2)

Probiotic effects on ectoparasitic mite infestations in honey bees (Apis mellifera) are modulated by environmental conditions and route of administration.

Beneficial bacteria can improve the health of managed honey bees (Apis mellifera) via immune system support as well as direct inhibition of pathogens. However, our understanding of how environmental factors and delivery methods impact treatment outcomes is limited. Here, we evaluated how supplementation of a three-strain lactobacilli consortium (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp39, Apilactobacillus kunkeei BR-1, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus; LX3) affects ectoparasitic mite (Varroa destructor) and bacterial (Paenibacillus larvae) load. We measured this effect following delivery of LX3 in eit

Preliminary Identification and Quantification of Individual Polyphenols in Fallopia japonica Plants and Honey and Their Influence on Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activities.

Fallopia japonica (FJ), an invasive plant species known for its rich bioactive compounds, has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Despite its significant beekeeping potential, this aspect of FJ remains underexplored. This research aims to investigate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of FJ plants and honey. Notably, this study is the first to identify individual phenolic compounds in both FJ plant tissues and FJ honey, highlighting resveratrol as a marker of FJ honey. The study tested inhibitory activity against seven bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, En

Genotoxic Potential of Thymol on Honey Bee DNA in the Comet Assay.

Thymol is a natural essential oil derived from the plant Thymus vulgaris L. It is known to be beneficial for human and animal health and has been used in beekeeping practice against Varroa mite for years. In this study, the genotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of thymol were evaluated on the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) continuous cell line AmE-711 for the first time. Using the Comet assay, three increasing concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 µg/mL) of thymol were tested. Negative control (non-treated cells) and positive control (cells treated with 100 µM H2O2) were also included. The absence

Delivery mechanism can enhance probiotic activity against honey bee pathogens.

Managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations play a crucial role in supporting pollination of food crops but are facing unsustainable colony losses, largely due to rampant disease spread within agricultural environments. While mounting evidence suggests that select lactobacilli strains (some being natural symbionts of honey bees) can protect against multiple infections, there has been limited validation at the field-level and few methods exist for applying viable microorganisms to the hive. Here, we compare how two different delivery systems-standard pollen patty infusion and a novel spray-b

Gamma irradiation inactivates honey bee fungal, microsporidian, and viral pathogens and parasites.

Managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations are currently facing unsustainable losses due to a variety of factors. Colonies are challenged with brood pathogens, such as the fungal agent of chalkbrood disease, the microsporidian gut parasite Nosema spp., and several viruses. These pathogens may be transmitted horizontally from worker to worker, vertically from queen to egg and via vectors like the parasitic mite, Varroa destructor. Despite the fact that these pathogens are widespread and often harbored in wax comb that is reused from year to year and transferred across beekeeping operations,

Effect of feed supplementation with probiotics and postbiotics on strength and health status of honey bee (Apis mellifera) hives during late spring.

Currently, beekeeping faces many risks, such as deteriorating health of honeybees in hives, which results in high mortality rates, mainly during winter. An important consequence is the emergence/re-emergence of communicable diseases such as varroosis or nosemosis. These diseases jeopardize the continuity of the sector because of the absence of effective treatments and harmful residues that they can be retained on wax or honey. This study aimed to evaluate how feed supplementation with probiotic and postbiotic products derived from lactic acid bacteria affected the strength, dynamic population,

Two Faces of the Screened Bottom Boards-An Ambiguous Influence on the Honey Bee Winter Colony Loss Rate.

We conducted a citizen science survey on the winter honey bee colony losses in Poland from 2017/18 to 2019/20 to determine the influence of the use of screened bottom boards on the winter colony losses due to various causes. A total of 1035 beekeepers with 40,003 colonies reported valid data. The overall winter colony loss rate ranged from 10.7% to 13.9%, and in every year, the overall winter colony loss rate was higher than 10% (which is considered as acceptable in Poland). The study reveals that the use of screened bottom boards was associated with reduced overall loss rate. However, the nat

Effects of a honeybee sting on the serum free amino acid profile in humans.

The aim of this study was to assess the response to a honeybee venom by analyzing serum levels of 34 free amino acids. Another goal of this study was to apply complex analytic-bioinformatic-clinical strategy based on up-to-date achievements of mass spectrometry in metabolomic profiling. The amino acid profiles were determined using hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometer coupled with a liquid chromatography instrument. Serum samples were collected from 27 beekeepers within 3 hours after they were stung and after a minimum of 6 weeks following the last sting. The differences

Comparative Evaluation of Organic and Commercial Treatments Against Varroa destructor in Apis mellifera: Implications for Honey Yield in Northeastern Mexico.

Infestation by Varroa destructor represents one of the major challenges for beekeeping, as it compromises both colony health and honey productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different organic treatments for the control of V. destructor and their effect on honey production in Apis mellifera colonies located on the central region of Tamaulipas, Mexico. A total of 150 colonies were assigned to five treatments: T1, oxalic acid with glycerin; T2, sublimated oxalic acid; T3, Thymol, T4; HappyVarr; and T5, an untreated control. Mite infestation (initial and final) a

The Identification of Bee Comb Cell Contents Using Semiconductor Gas Sensors.

Beekeeping is an extremely difficult field of agriculture. It requires efficient management of the bee nest so that the bee colony can develop efficiently and produce as much honey and other bee products as possible. The beekeeper, therefore, must constantly monitor the contents of the bee comb. At the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, research is being carried out to develop methods for efficient management of the apiary. One of our research goals was to test whether a gas detector (MCA-8) based on six semiconductor sensors-TGS823, TGS826, TGS832, TGS2600, TGS2602, and TGS2603 from

Development and assessment of an epidemiologic dashboard for surveillance of Varroa destructor in Ontario apiaries.

Varroosis (caused by the Varroa destructor mite) is a key health issue for honey bees in North America. Because these mites can exist in reservoirs of feral honey bee colonies, eradication is impossible, and instead efforts are made to maintain mites below a critical threshold. Monitoring for Varroa mites within a population is key for allocating resources and targeting interventions but surveillance can be difficult and/or expensive. This project aims to reflect on the success of data dashboards developed throughout the 2019-coronavirus pandemic and showcase how these methods can improve surv

Molecular Identification of Six Honeybee Viruses in Iranian Apiaries.

The identification of honeybee viruses is of serious importance, particularly considering the lack of information on the natural incidence of viral infections in honeybee populations worldwide. Moreover, the global spread of Varroa destructor in honeybee colonies has a significant effect on the viral infection. In the present study, 160 samples of adult bee from apparently healthy colonies but with a background of parasitic diseases, tremor, and paralysis, were collected during 2011-2012. The samples belonged to 23 different provinces of Iran. They were sent to Razi Vaccine and Serum Research

Anti-IgE autoantibodies and bee-sting allergy.

Serum anti-IgE autoantibodies (aaIgE) were investigated by dot immunobinding assay in bee-allergic patients in comparison with nonallergic beekeepers, healthy blood donors, and atopic subjects. Elevated serum levels of aaIgE--either free or combined with IgE--were found in both bee-allergic patients and atopic subjects as compared with beekeepers and healthy donors. With regard to a possible significance of aaIgE for the protective mechanism induced by specific allergen immunotherapy, we estimated aaIgE in bee-allergic patients before, during, and after bee-venom immunotherapy (BVIT) in relati

Conservation of Honeybee (Apis mellifera) Intraspecific Diversity Through Reproductive Science and Technology.

There are approximately 30 subspecies of the Western honeybee (Apis mellifera), many of which are threatened by genetic introgression due to migratory beekeeping as well an intensive trade with queens and colonies. Invasive pests and parasites can additionally lead to the loss of wild and feral populations. Because A. mellifera mates in free flight and in central "congregation areas", gene flow between managed and unmanaged populations is extremely hard to prevent. Therefore, conservation through utilization is generally viewed as the most promising (though not the only) way to preserve intras

The effects of box stocking density on the reproduction of female Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini).

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important pollinators that are widely used for greenhouse crop pollination and are produced annually by commercial breeding facilities. In this study, we used the commercially important bumblebee species Bombus terrestris Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini) to evaluate the effects of artificial box stocking density on the reproductive performance of newly eclosed females under commercial rearing conditions. Newly eclosed gynes and workers were artificially held in separate wooden boxes at different stocking densities (1 to 150 individuals per box for gynes and
