Behavioral response of two species of stingless bees and the honey bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) to GF-120.

We present the results of evaluating the response of three species of bees, Trigona fulviventris (Guérin), Scaptotrigona mexicana (Guérin-Meneville), and Apis mellifera (L.), to food sources baited with the toxic bait GF-120 (NF Naturalyte), a spinosad-based bait exclusively used to manage fruit flies. Groups of foragers were trained to collect honey and water from a feeder located 50 m from the colonies. Once a sufficient number of foragers were observed at the experimental location, the training feeder was changed to two or three feeders that offered either honey and water, GF-120, Captor (h

Rational Design and Synthesis of Isoxazoline Derivatives with Low Bee-Toxicity Based on Bee GABA Receptors.

The isoxazoline insecticide, such as fluralaner, exhibits strong insecticidal activity against pests while showing no cross-resistance. However, due to its toxicity to bees, the use of Fluralaner is restricted in veterinary antiparasitic applications. Hence, how to modify the structure of fluralaner to maintain the insecticidal activity and reduce the toxicity to bees is vital and meaningful. In this study, a virtual screening of 11 diamide substructures was conducted based on the GABA receptor of bees (Apis mellifera), and four compounds with lower docking scores were regarded as potential lo

Quantitation of pesticides in bee bread collected from honey bee colonies in an agricultural environment in Switzerland.

Pesticide contamination of bee products is a widespread phenomenon. Due to its composition, bee bread is affected by both lipophilic and hydrophilic substances. As proof of concept of a monitoring campaign and to better understand the extent of contamination, we developed an analytical method based on a modified QuEChERS extraction, with subsequent separation by liquid chromatography and detection by mass spectrometry. This allowed for the quantitation of 51 agricultural- or beekeeping-associated pesticides in bee bread. The workflow was applied to 60 samples taken biweekly throughout spring t

Molecular characterization of emerging bacterial communities associated with honey bees.

Honey bees are vital pollinators essential for ecosystems and global agriculture, but their populations are declining due to pressures caused by pests. This study reports the presence of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus terrae, and Pseudomonas spp. in four different honey bee species in Pakistan for the first time, uncovering a previously neglected aspect of honey bee microbiology. From January 2023 to June 2024; 1190 honey bees were collected from four districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and they were identified. Molecular screening based on PCR targeting the microbial 16 S rDNA r

Social evolution and diminished olfactory function in larval honey bees.

Social evolution made larval honey bees dependent on adult colony members for feeding; they are confined to cells in waxen honeycombs and visited about 100 times per day by adult "nurse" bees. Based on organismal resource conservation theory, we predicted larvae have diminished olfactory capabilities at both the molecular and behavioral levels. Consistent with theory, larvae expressed very low levels of Orco, an essential gene for olfactory receptor (OR) function. By contrast, they showed higher expression of Ir25a, essential for other forms of sensory perception including gustation. Also cons

Comparative anatomy of the thoracic muscles of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea).

Bees exhibit a remarkable anatomical diversity, with phenotypic traits that reflect broad evolutionary patterns and specific adaptations. Understanding these patterns requires examining key anatomical features, such as thoracic musculature, which drives morpho-functional variation and underscores their extensive phenotypic diversity. The thorax (or 'mesosoma,' as it can be referred to in the context of bees and other apocritan Hymenoptera) serves as a power core, housing muscles responsible for leg, wing, and also head and metasomal articulation movements. Despite the role of the thoracic musc

Diet affects reproductive development and microbiota composition in honey bees.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbes are important to the health and fitness of many animals. Many factors have been shown to affect gut microbial communities including diet, lifestyle, and age. Most animals have very complex physiologies, lifestyles, and microbiomes, making it virtually impossible to disentangle what factors have the largest impact on microbiota composition. Honeybees are an excellent model to study host-microbe interactions due to their relatively simple gut microbiota, experimental tractability, and eusociality. Worker honey bees have distinct gut microbiota from their queen mothers de

Mangifera indica as propolis source: what exactly do bees collect?

OBJECTIVE: The mango tree Mangifera indica is known as one of the botanical sources of propolis in Tropical regions. There are two different materials which bees can collect from a mango tree to produce propolis: the resin of the tree bark, and the latex found on the fruits. We performed the study of the chemical profile of mango resin in comparison with propolis in order to clarify its importance as propolis source. RESULTS: We compared the chemical profiles (by GC-MS analysis of ethanol extracts after silylation) of the resin and samples of propolis: of stingless bees (3 Vietnames, 2 Indone

Antibacterial potential of hive bees honey from Himachal Pradesh, India.

This paper presents a pioneer study on the microbial diversity and antibacterial potential of hive bees (Apis cerana and A. mellifera) honey collected from Himachal Pradesh. In total, 26 bacteria (14 from A. cerana and 12 from A. mellifera) but no fungal isolate were recovered. Bee species and locations comparison in terms of bacterial load (log CFU/g) revealed maximum loads of 3.74 and 3.99 in the honey from A. cerana and Mandi location, respectively. The most prevalent strains (HC3, HC5, HC6, HC8 and HM2) were identified (16S rRNA ribotyping) as Staphylococcus haemolyticus (MT742636), "Bacil

Pheromones modulate responsiveness to a noxious stimulus in honey bees.

Pheromones are chemical substances released into the environment by an individual, which trigger stereotyped behaviors and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species. Yet, a novel hypothesis has suggested that pheromones not only elicit innate responses but also contribute to behavioral plasticity by affecting the subjective evaluation of appetitive or aversive stimuli. To test this hypothesis, we exposed bees to three pheromonal components whose valence was either negative (i.e. associated with aversive events: isopentyl acetate and 2-heptanone) or positive (i.e. associated

The Extraordinary Alkali Bee, Nomia melanderi (Halictidae), the World's Only Intensively Managed Ground-Nesting Bee.

Among the ground-nesting bees are several proven crop pollinators, but only the alkali bee (Nomia melanderi) has been successfully managed. In <80 years, it has become the world's most intensely studied ground-nesting solitary bee. In many ways, the bee seems paradoxical. It nests during the torrid, parched midsummer amid arid valleys and basins of the western United States, yet it wants damp nesting soil. In these basins, extensive monocultures of an irrigated Eurasian crop plant, alfalfa (lucerne), subsidize millions of alkali bees. Elsewhere, its polylectic habits and long foraging range al

Managing bees in a pathogenic world: research priorities to protect biodiversity.

Pathogens associated with managed bees are frequently detected in wild arthropods, raising concerns about potential negative impacts on biodiversity and fueling scientific, societal, and political debate. However, major gaps remain in our understanding of the mechanisms driving pathogen spillovers, their impacts on recipient hosts, and mitigation strategies. We propose an integrative, holistic research framework beyond the current focus on pathogen detection that centers on the impacts of shared pathogens and on management strategies to mitigate risks. This reframing will help guide future res

Morphological and Ecological Traits Explain Variation in Desiccation Tolerance Among Bees.

Rising temperatures associated with global warming are often accompanied by shifts in precipitation patterns, increasing the risk of desiccation for insects. However, our understanding of how functional traits shape desiccation tolerance remains limited, particularly among pollinators. We assessed the desiccation tolerance of 22 bee species (13 genera, five families) from the Greek island of Lesbos, covering a range of body sizes, hairiness, nesting habitats, and social structures. We measured three desiccation tolerance metrics under standardized acute desiccating conditions (27°C and 0% RH):

Worker bees preventing diapause in Bombus terrestris queens via tyrosine metabolism.

The reproductive dormancy (diapause) of bumblebee queens is a major bottleneck for controlled pollination services. We demonstrate that direct social interaction with worker bees rapidly terminates queen diapause and triggers oviposition, bypassing the need for hibernation. This worker bee induction, especially when combined with CO2 treatment, significantly shortens the time to egg-laying compared to conventional methods. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses identified the activation of tyrosine metabolism as the central mechanism driving this socially induced reproductive switc

Targeted Gene Editing in Honey Bees Using Liposome-Based CRISPR-Cas9.

Genome editing technologies have revolutionized molecular biology, enabling precise manipulation of gene functions across diverse organisms. In this study, we introduce a novel liposome-mediated delivery system for CRISPR-Cas9 components targeting the Juvenile Hormone Acid Methyltransferase (JHAMT) gene in honey bees (Apis mellifera anatoliaca). This approach leverages drone sperm cells as vectors for CRISPR-Cas9 transfection, overcoming the technical challenges of embryo microinjection in honey bees, such as low survival rates and labor-intensive procedures. The study involved artificial inse

Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting from the Thorax Vibration of Freely Flying Bees.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by the immune system. Its pathogenesis involves the interaction of multiple factors, among which the accumulation of dental plaque is considered the initial key factor in the onset of the disease. As the pathogenic bacteria in plaque proliferate and metabolites are released, the host's immune system produces a strong response, leading to an inflammatory response and structural destruction of local tissues. Traditional treatment relies on mechanical scraping and antibiotics but suffers from tissue damage, difficulty in removing deep-seate
