Cannabis Use and Associated Risk Behavior Factors among High School Students in Mississippi: Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System 2021.

Cannabis is the most used illicit drug among youths in the United States. The objectives of this study were to identify the association between cannabis use and other risk behaviors, including suicidality, among high school students. This is a cross-sectional study using the 2021 Mississippi Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS). The 2021 YRBS data sets were combined for this study. The crude odds ratio (OR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval were generated using the survey packages in R to account for weights and the complex sampling design of the YRBS data.

Adverse childhood experiences and chronic health outcomes: evidence from 33 US states in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests a significant association between adverse childhood experience (ACE) and chronic health outcomes among U.S. adults. However, there remains a critical need to explore these associations specifically with respect to racial disparities. Early adversity and preexisting health vulnerabilities may interact, compounding the risk of chronic diseases in historically marginalized populations. This study further explored the relationship between ACE and chronic disease, recognizing that ACEs may exert a more pronounced effect in racial and ethnic groups already at ele

Does the response to alcohol taxes differ across racial/ethnic groups? Some evidence from 1984-2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol use remains an important lifestyle-related contributor to morbidity and mortality in the U.S. and worldwide. It is well documented that drinking patterns differ across racial/ethnic groups, but not how those different consumption patterns would respond to tax changes. Therefore, policy makers are not informed on whether the effects of tax increases on alcohol abuse are shared equally by the whole population, or policies in addition to taxation should be pursued to reach certain sociodemographic groups. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To estimate differential demand responses

Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Oral Health Among Women in the United States: Findings From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

It is well established that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively impact physical and mental health. There is a paucity of research examining the impact of ACEs on oral health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to better understand how ACEs may impact oral health utilizing a nationally representative sample of females. Data from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were utilized. The sample comprised 36,249 females. Chi-square tests were used to examine associations between multiple forms of ACEs and oral health, mental health, smoking, and health-related qu
