The association of behavior and lifestyle factors with menstrual symptoms.

The present study examines the association of obesity, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise with the prevalence of menstrual cycle disorders among 2912 women aboard U.S. Navy ships. Self-administered surveys obtained information on weight, height, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise. Participants also indicated whether they experienced cramps or pain during their period requiring medication or time off work, bleeding between periods, excessive frequency of periods, heavy periods, periods lasting for longer than a week, scanty menstrual flow, and irregular perio

[Behavior dissorders in psittacines. 1. Symptoms and causes].

Psittacines embody in an ideal fashion the child-like characteristics that humans adore. Animal lovers are unable to resist their expressive eyes, brightly coloured plumage, tameness and mimicry of human speech. The desire of pet-owners to have a tame, speaking bird with a very strong bond to its owner is achieved through hand-rearing, but this results in psychoreactive behavioural abnormalities in these highly social birds due to abnormal fixation. The signs and causes of these behavioural abnormalities, also called cage neuroses, are explained. The complex of feather-plucking, feather-ingest

Compulsive behaviors as presenting symptoms of frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a common neurodegenerative dementia syndrome. Compulsive behaviors frequently occur in FTD and may be presenting symptoms of this disorder. This study evaluated compulsive behaviors as presenting symptoms in 29 patients with FTD compared to 48 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) enrolled in the UCLA Alzheimer's Disease Center. The FTD patients met the Lund and Manchester criteria for FTD and had predominant frontal hypoperfusion on single-photon emission computer tomography neuroimaging. The AD patients met National Institute of Neurological and Communicativ

Behavioral Complexity in Alzheimer's Disease: A Diversity-Based Analysis of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms.

Background and Objectives: To quantify behavioral complexity in probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), compare complexity phenotypes, and determine whether behavioral complexity provides clinically meaningful information beyond total neuropsychiatric burden. We also explored whether global amyloid extent and lobar amyloid topography added explanatory value. Methods: In this cross-sectional retrospective study, we analyzed 245 psychotropic drug-naïve patients with probable AD, positive 18F-FC119S amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), and complete neuropsychiatric, cognitive, functional, and r

Neuropsychiatric symptoms cluster and fluctuate over time in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

AIM: Cognitive and behavioral phenomena define behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), but neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) outside the core criteria are common throughout the illness. Identifying how NPS cluster in bvFTD may guide development of future therapies. METHODS: Participants (n = 354) with sporadic and genetic bvFTD were enrolled in the ARTFL LEFFTDS Longitudinal Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration Consortium. Dementia stage was defined as early (CDR® plus NACC FTLD ≤1) or advanced (CDR® plus NACC FTLD ≥1). Baseline and annual follow-up visit data were analyzed to compare

Digit ratio (2D:4D) and behavioral symptoms in primary-school aged boys.

The second-to-forth digit length ratio (2D:4D) is considered to be a biomarker for intrauterine androgen levels. It is associated with adult and child mental health problems, primarily with behavioral symptoms and predominantly in males. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined whether 2D:4D was associated with conduct disorder (CD) symptoms in 138 primary-school aged children (54% boys, Mage = 7.70 years) and considered child sex as a moderating factor. Children's digit lengths were measured from hand scans and mothers rated the behavioral/emotional symptoms of their child. The regression

Behavioral Symptoms in Premanifest Huntington Disease Correlate with Reduced Frontal CB1R Levels.

Many Huntington disease (HD) mutation carriers already have cognitive and psychiatric symptoms in the premanifest (premotor) phase of the disease (pre-HD), but the molecular underpinnings of these symptoms are not well understood. Previous work has shown reduced availability of the cerebral type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1R) in manifest HD. Here, we investigated whether CB1R binding is related to cognitive and psychiatric symptoms in pre-HD mutation carriers. Methods: CB1R binding was measured with 18F-MK-9470 (N-[(2S,3S)-3-(3-cyanophenyl)-4-(4-ethoxyphenyl)butan-2-yl]-2-methyl-2-(5-methylpyri

Treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementias with psychopharmaceuticals: a review.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms represent common complications in patients with different types of dementia. Predominantly, they comprise psychosis, agitation and mood disorders, disinhibited behavior, impairment of the sleep and wakefulness rhythm, wandering, perseveration, pathological collecting, or shouting. Their appearance is related to more rapid progression of the disease, earlier institutionalization, use of physical restraints, and higher risk of mortality. Consequently, appearance of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia leads to higher costs of care provided and g

Melatonin acts at the suprachiasmatic nucleus to attenuate behavioral symptoms of infection.

In common with reproduction, immune function exhibits strong seasonal patterns, which are driven by annual changes in day length (photoperiod) and melatonin secretion. Whereas changes in melatonin communicate seasonal time into the reproductive axis via subcortical receptors, the relevant melatonin targets for communicating seasonal time into the immune system remain unspecified. The authors report that melatonin implants targeting the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) induced a winter phenotype in the immune system. SCN melatonin implants attenuated infection-induced anorexia and cach

Cholinergic-serotonergic imbalance contributes to cognitive and behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not simply a consequence of neurodegeneration, but probably result from differential neurotransmitter alterations, which some patients are more at risk of than others. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study is that an imbalance between the cholinergic and serotonergic systems is related to cognitive symptoms and psychological syndromes of dementia (BPSD) in patients with AD. Cholinergic and serotonergic functions were assessed in post-mortem frontal and temporal cortex from 22 AD patients who had been prospectively assessed with t

Association between youth constipation, emotional/behavioral symptoms, and family quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Functional constipation is common in youth and negatively impacts quality of life. It is also linked to increased behavioral and emotional symptoms. While the impact of mental health problems on individual and family well-being is known, the combined association of youth behavioral/emotional symptoms and constipation severity on family quality of life remains unclear. This study examined the relationship between these factors and constipation-related family quality of life. METHODS: Participants were 231 children and adolescents (ages 2-18 years; M = 7.62, SD = 3.41; 50.6% female;

Future Therapeutic Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease: Focus on Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that impairs memory and thinking skills, leading to significant economic and humanistic burdens. It is associated with various neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) such as anxiety, agitation, depression, aggression, apathy, and psychosis. NPSs are common in patients with AD, affecting up to 97% of individuals diagnosed with AD. The severity of NPS is linked to disease progression and cognitive decline. NPS in Alzheimer's disease leads to increased morbidity, mortality, caregiver burden, earlier nursing home placement, and higher

Factors Associated with Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia during COVID-19.

(1) Background: Preventive measures to control the spread of COVID-19 are essential, but they often cause social isolation and diminish the physical and mental health of older adults. In cognitively impaired individuals, the pandemic has worsened behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Here, we explored the factors contributing to the worsening of BPSD during the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: Potential patients were identified at a memory clinic in Japan between June 2017 and June 2021. Eligible patients had a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia during

Regional prefrontal cortical atrophy predicts specific cognitive-behavioral symptoms in ALS-FTD.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-Frontotemporal Dementia (ALS-FTD) may present typical behavioral variant FTD symptoms. This study aims to determine whether profile and severity of cognitive-behavioral symptoms in ALS/ALS-FTD are predicted by regional cortical atrophy. The hypothesis is that executive dysfunction can be predicted by dorsolateral prefrontal cortical (dlPFC) atrophy, apathy by dorsomedial PFC (dmPFC) and anterior cingulate cortical (ACC) atrophy, disinhibition by orbitofrontal cortical (OFC) atrophy. 3.0 Tesla MRI scans were acquired from 22 people with ALS or ALS-FTD.
