Two African infants born in Belgium, dying from the acquired immune deficiency syndrome are reported. The first patient was a premature baby girl born to healthy parents. This data paper describes a recent and spatially complete inventory of the terrestrial isopods of Belgium between 2011 and 2020. During these 10 years every 10 × 10 km² cell of the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid in Belgium (373 grid cells) was visited in search for terrestrial isopods. Quality standards for the management of bronchiectasis were formulated by the British Thoracic Society following publication of guidelines in 2010. There has been a marked decrease in the incidence of cervical cancer thanks to cytological screening with the Pap smear test. In Belgium, this screening is rather opportunistic. Over 39% of Belgian women between 25 and 64 years of age are never or only rarely screened by cytological tests. Even though infected sheep are a potential source of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans, information is lacking concerning the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep in Belgium. We examined 3170 serum samples for anti-Toxoplasma IgG in sheep by total lysate antigen (TLA) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IgG to T. gondii was demonstrated in 87.4% of the tested sheep and in 96.2% of the 209 tested flocks. To determine why incidence of mucormycosis infections was increasing in a large university hospital in Belgium, we examined case data from 2000-2009. We found the increase was not related to voriconazole use but most probably to an increase in high-risk patients, particularly those with underlying hematologic malignancies.

The importance of maintenance care for controlling periodontitis and preventing disease recurrence is well-documented. Supportive periodontal therapy is essentially based on periodontal risk assessment, oral hygiene reinforcement and professional cleaning. As most of the referred periodontal patients return to the general practitioner at some point, supportive periodontal therapy should be continued in general practice. This manuscript offers the clinician, in particular the general practitioner, a number of guidelines to organize maintenance care.

Hybrid metal-on-metal surface arthroplasty of the hip has recently been introduced, with a vast number of implants used in European countries including Belgium. This article presents results in 252 hips with a mean follow-up of 2.8 years. Using a tight press-fit with minimal cement mantle as the technique of femoral fixation, there have been only three failures. The main complications have been avascular necrosis of the femoral head and femoral neck fracture. We report herein the case of a Belgian 76-year-old woman who developed a hepatic tumour suspected to be a breast cancer metastasis. Radiological imaging and guided biopsies were not contributive. Using data from Belgian neuropathological archives, completed with the results of a comprehensive study of available medical records, we found 100 patients who fulfilled diagnostic criteria for probable or definite Creutzfeldt-Jakob d1551isease (CJD).
