Liver function in protein-energy malnutrition measured by cinnamic acid tolerance and benzoic acid tolerance: effect of carnitine supplementation.

1. Rats fed on a protein-depleted diet for 8 weeks were repleted for 5 weeks on high-protein (HP), high-protein + 20 g DL-carnitine/kg (HP + C), or low-protein + 20 g DL-carnitine/kg (LP + C) diets. At 4 and 8 weeks of depletion, and 1 and 5 weeks of repletion, rats from each treatment group were given a benzoic acid tolerance test (BATT) or a cinnamic acid tolerance test (CATT) as a measure of liver function. 2. BATT and CATT measured the molar percentage of a test dose (1 mmol/kg body-weight) of benzoic acid or cinnamic acid excreted in the urine as hippuric acid within 24 h. Liver weight, l

Benzoic Acid Secreted From the Chickpea Root Promotes Persistent Colonisation by Specific Soil Microbes.

The plant root tip is highly sensitive to environmental cues and exerts sensory, chemical and movement responses. However, the microbial diversification at the root tip, and the nature of root-selection for microbes, are poorly understood. This study investigated root exudation and microbiome colonisation in the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) root tip and root base, in diverse soils. For the endosphere microbiome, deterministic effects were more important than stochastic processes in shaping the root tip microbiome, indicated by the stable endophyte composition independent of the soil microbiot

Evaluation of analgesic and antiplatelet activity of 2-((3-(chloromethyl)benzoyl)oxy)benzoic acid.

Acetylsalicylic acid is used as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and antiplatelet agents by inhibiting cyclooxygenases. However, therapy using acetylsalicylic acid could induce gastric bleeding and cause other gastrointestinal toxicity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the synthesis of a new compound bearing salicylic acid residue namely 2-((3-(chloromethyl)benzoyl)oxy)benzoic acid, to analyze its potential as a ligand for human cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) receptor, to evaluate its toxicity level and its effectiveness for analgesic and antiplatelet agent compared with acety

Benzoic acid metabolism reflects hepatic mitochondrial function in rats with long-term extrahepatic cholestasis.

Benzoic acid metabolism, which is primarily a function of liver mitochondria, depending on the concentration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), coenzyme A (CoA), and glycine in the mitochondrial matrix, was investigated in both rats with long-term cholestasis caused by bile duct ligation (BDL) and sham-operated control rats. In isolated liver mitochondria, hippurate production from benzoate in the presence of saturating glycine concentrations was reduced in BDL rats by 36% with L-glutamate as a source for ATP, by 21% in the presence of succinate, and by 31% in the presence of ATP plus oligomycin

Evaluation of 2-(2-thiophenecarboxy)benzoic acid and related active metabolites in biological samples.

This paper describes a quantitative assay of 2-(2-thiophenecarboxy)benzoic acid and its systemic metabolites, namely salicylic acid and thiophenecarboxylic acid, by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection at 254 nm. Analytes were extracted from acidified samples with tert.-butylmethyl ether and separated with an RP-18 column (150 mm x 3 mm I.D., 5 microns particle size) with a mixture of 0.01 M potassium phosphate and methanol (70:30, v/v) at pH 3.1. The method proved to have the validation required for pharmacokinetic investigations in animals and humans.

Steam-based solid-phase extraction method for benzoic and sorbic acids in food by HPLC.

A steam-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was developed for the determination of benzoic acid and sorbic acid in food matrices. Samples were heated, and the generated steam was passed through an SPE cartridge in two successive cycles. Analytes were eluted with 0.1% (v/v) acetic acid in methanol and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Method validation demonstrated linearity over 1-100 μg mL-1 for benzoic acid and 1-300 μg mL-1 for sorbic acid (R2 ≥ 0.999), and recoveries of 91.9-102.6% with repeatability of 0.7-3.8% RSD and intermediate precision of 1.9-5.0% RS

Rh-Catalyzed Annulation of Benzoic Acids, Formaldehyde, and Malonates via ortho-Hydroarylation to Indanones.

A three-component reaction from readily available low-cost materials of benzoic acids, formaldehyde, and malonates for the preparation of indanones by rhodium catalysis is reported. The annulation is initiated by an ortho-hydroarylation of benzoic acids, and a Lewis acid is not required. The solvent has a significant influence to the reaction, and 2-substituted or nonsubstituted indanones are obtained by the change of solvent.

Occurrence of Benzoic Acid Esters as Putative Catabolites of Prunasin in Senescent Leaves of Prunus laurocerasus.

Prunus laurocerasus is an evergreen shrub containing large quantities of the cyanogenic glycoside prunasin (1) in its leaves, which decomposes to prunasin amide (2) or glucose-1-benzoate (4) when the leaves become chlorotic as a result of senescence or pseudosenescence. This study was aimed at the systematic identification of senescence-associated metabolites to contribute further insight into the catabolism of 1. LC-ESIMS profiles of senescent and green leaves were analyzed by principal component analysis. In senescent leaves, the concentrations of 36 compounds were increased significantly in

Topical use of tea tree oil reduces the dermal absorption of benzoic acid and methiocarb.

Tea tree oil (TTO) is a complex mixture of terpene hydrocarbons. Intensive topical use of TTO in different cosmetics and investigations into its potential as an antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory agent has accentuated the need for studies on the toxicity of TTO. We have applied an experimental in vitro model using static diffusion cells with human skin to study penetration characteristics of terpinen-4-ol and the way TTO affects the barrier integrity of the skin and the percutaneous penetration of two chemicals covering a range of solubilities from 0.03 g/l (methiocarb) to 3.0 g/l (benzoic aci

Absorption of benzoic acid in segmental regions of the vascularly perfused rat small intestine preparation.

Oral bioavailability is a consequence of intestinal absorption, exsorption, and metabolism and is further modulated by the difference in activities among segmental regions. The influence of these factors on the net absorption of benzoic acid (BA), a substrate that is metabolized to hippurate and is transported by the monocarboxylic acid transporter 1, was studied in the recirculating, vascularly perfused, rat small intestine preparation. Metabolism of BA was not observed for both systemic and intraluminal injections into segments of varying lengths. But, secretion of BA into lumen was noted. A

Topical benzoic acid induces the increased biosynthesis of prostaglandin D2 in human skin in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Benzoic acid is one of the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics, foodstuffs, and drug preparations. Nonetheless, products containing this compound frequently induce cutaneous erythema. Previous studies have suggested that prostaglandins may mediate the cutaneous vasodilation because ingestion of cyclooxygenase inhibitors before the application of benzoic acid markedly diminishes this symptom. However, the prostaglandin responsible has not been conclusively determined. Recently we showed that cutaneous erythema similar to that associated with application of venzoic acid is

Benzoic Acid potentiates intestinal IgA response in broiler chickens against Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium infection.

As a feed additive, Benzoic Acid (BA) has been demonstrated to significantly enhance feed conversion efficiency, regulate gastrointestinal pH, and improve overall animal health. Young animals, highly susceptible to S. Typhimurium infection, suffer from high mortality rates and substantial economic losses due to this pathogen. Despite promising indications of BA's immunomodulatory potential in boosting intestinal immunity, its underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates how BA strengthens intestinal anti-infection defenses in young animals via immunomodulator

Novel benzoic acid derivatives: Synthesis and biological evaluation as multitarget acetylcholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by dementia, memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, and speech impairment. The utility of cholinergic replacement by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors in AD treatment has been well documented so far. Recently, studies have also evidenced that human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs) serve as an important target for AD treatment. In this direction, the improvement of new multitarget drugs, which can simultaneously modulate several mechanisms or targets included in the AD pathway, may be a potent strategy to treat AD. In ligh

A 2:1 co-crystal of 3,5-di-bromo-4-cyano-benzoic acid and anthracene.

The title co-crystal, C8H3Br2NO2·0.5C14H10, was self-assembled from a 2:1 mixture of the components in slowly evaporating di-chloro-methane. The mol-ecules adopt a sheet structure parallel to (1-12) in which carb-oxy hydrogen-bonded dimers and anthracene mol-ecules stagger in both dimensions. Within the sheets, six individual cyano acid mol-ecules surround each anthracene mol-ecule. Cyano acid mol-ecules form one of the two possible R22(10) rings between neighboring cyano and bromo groups. Compared to the di-chloro analog [Britton (2012 ▸). J. Chem. Crystallogr.42, 851-855], the dihedral angle

Synthesis and biological evaluation of benzoic acid derivatives as potent, orally active VLA-4 antagonists.

A series of benzoic acid derivatives was synthesized as VLA-4 antagonists. Introduction of chlorine or bromine into the 3-position on the central benzene of the diphenylurea portion as in lead compound 2 led to improvement in the pharmacokinetic properties. In particular, 12l demonstrated an acceptable plasma clearance and bioavailability in mice and rats as well as dogs (mice, CL=18.5 ml/min/kg,F=28%; rats, CL=5.2 ml/min/kg,F=36%; dogs, CL=3.6 ml/min/kg,F=55%). Additionally, 12l exhibited potent activity with an IC50 value of 0.51 nM and efficacy by oral administration at a dosage of 10 mg/kg

Sorption behavior of three aromatic acids (benzoic acid, 1-naphthoic acid and 9-anthroic acid) on biochar: Cosolvent effect in different liquid phases.

Influence of the cosolvent on the sorption of organic acids on biochar has not been well understood. For this purpose, the sorption (log Km, L kg-1) of three aromatic acids (benzoic acid (BA, pKa = 4.20), 1-naphthoic acid (1-NAPA, pKa = 3.70), and 9-anthroic acid (9-ANTA, pKa = 3.65) was evaluated as a function of methanol volume fraction (fc = 0.0, 0.25, and 0.5), liquid pH (2.5 and 7.0), ionic composition (CaCl2 and KCl) and ionic strength (0.005 M, 0.5 M, and 1 M CaCl2). A giant Miscanthus-derived biochar (ZPC of 2.86) was used as the sorbent. For all solutes, the sorption coefficients (log

Effects of benzoic acid synthesized from Cinnamomum cassia by green chemistry on valproic acid-induced neurotoxicity in zebrafish embryos.

Benzoic acid, the most basic aromatic carboxylic acid, is produced industrially and used in cosmetic, hygiene, and pharmaceutical items as a flavoring ingredient and/or preservative. The significance of sodium benzoate, a metabolite of cinnamon, used as a food preservative and FDA-approved medication to treat urea cycle abnormalities in humans, has been shown to raise the levels of neurotrophic factors. Valproic acid (VPA), a commonly used anti-epileptic and mood-stabilizing medication, causes behavioral and intellectual problems and is a commonly used agent to induce animal model for autism.

Effect of Benzoic Acid on Nutrient Digestibility and Rectal Microbiota of Weaned Holstein Dairy Calves.

Our previous study has shown that supplementation of 0.50% benzoic acid (BA) increased growth performance, promoted rumen fermentation, and improved the composition and function of rumen microbiota. This research was designed to conduct a deeper exploration of the impacts of dietary supplementation with BA on the apparent digestibility of nutrients and the composition of rectal microbiota in weaned Holstein dairy calves. Sixteen Holstein heifer calves with similar body weights (91.2 ± 0.7 kg) were selected and randomly allocated into two groups, each comprising eight calves. Calves in the cont

Vitamin C and Benzoic Acid Intake in Patients with Kidney Disease: Is There Risk of Benzene Exposure?

Vitamin C is a small water-soluble molecule primarily cleared by the kidneys. Therefore, its plasma concentration would be expected to increase as kidney function declines. However, studies in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney transplant recipients have shown the opposite: a positive correlation between kidney function and plasma vitamin C levels. In this review, we discuss potential explanations for this counterintuitive finding and suggest alternative mechanisms influencing vitamin C bioavailability in this population. We also explore the hypothesis that this phenomenon m
