The extent to which topical and intradermal corticosteroids and topical indomethacin suppress sunburn erythema was investigated in human volunteers. Both agents retarded the onset and decreased the magnitude of delayed erythema. Suppression by corticosteroids was not demonstrable with ultraviolet doses larger than 2 MEDs (minimal erythema dose). The phototoxicity of Betamethasone valerate and betamethasone dipropionate has been investigated on irradiation in the wavelength range of 300-400 nm, using some basic in vitro phototoxicity tests. BACKGROUND: Trauma is an immediate triggering factor in the development of necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (NLD). NLD has previously never been documented in a tattoo site.
OBJECTIVE AND CONCLUSION: Here we report an otherwise healthy 35-year-old woman with an area of NLD located in a tattoo site. Initial injection with intralesional triamcinalone acetonide showed no benefit. Subsequent application of betamethasone valerate cream did not lead to improvement of the lesion.

The patient, a 34-year-old Japanese woman who noticed worsening of her rash after using topical corticosteroid preparations on her neck, was patch tested for both commercial preparations and corticosteroids themselves. The patch test results revealed that she had a contact allergy to gold, oxytetracycline, and 2 types of corticosteroid (acetonides and esters) in 7 compounds (betamethasone valerate and dipropionate, hydrocortisone butyrate and hydrocortisone butyrate propionate, amcinonide, budesonide, and fluocinonide).

A 47-year-old female treated with an autologous bone marrow transplant and cytotoxic chemotherapy developed a lichen planus-like eruption 12 months later. It involved the skin and oral mucosa, with the histological features of a lichenoid graft-versus-host reaction, including satellite cell necrosis. This eruption developed de novo. The eruption resolved with topical betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream despite the ongoing use of the immunomodulatory agent interferon-alpha2b. Such a reaction in an autologous setting has only been described once previously.

This is a report of two patients suspected of having allergic dermato-conjunctivitis due to corticosteroids. Both were tested with the constituents of the ointments they were using, that is, corticosteroids, antibacterial agents, preservatives, and other active ingredients of the ointment bases.
