Factors contributing to ongoing intimate partner abuse: childhood betrayal trauma and dependence on one's perpetrator.

Identifying the factors that contribute to ongoing intimate partner abuse (IPA) among survivors of childhood abuse is essential to developing appropriate interventions. The current study assessed prospectively whether childhood betrayal trauma (BT) history and women's potential dependence on their perpetrators (unemployment, number of children below 13) increased women's risk of ongoing victimization, while controlling for trauma-related symptoms (PTSD, depression, dissociation). Women survivors of IPA (N = 190) from an urban U.S. city were recruited based on an IPA incident reported to the po

Do dialectical self-beliefs moderate the indirect effect of betrayal traumas on posttraumatic stress through self-compassion?

BACKGROUND: Traumatic events experienced in childhood, particularly those that are perpetrated by someone whom the child trusts or depends upon (i.e., high betrayal traumas [HBTs], such as abuse by a parent) can lead to long-term negative consequences, including a tendency to see oneself in a negative light, low self-compassion, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Although negative psychological consequences of HBTs are well-documented in the literature, little is known surrounding the protective factors that may reduce the effects of HBTs on individuals' functioning. The present study focused

The impact of potentially morally injurious experience of betrayal on PTSD and depression following the October 7th terror attack.

With about 1200 individuals murdered, the massacre of October 7th was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in modern history. The mental health consequences of terrorist attacks have been documented. However, little is known of the impact of the potentially morally injurious experience (PMIE) of betrayal--in which individuals feel betrayed by leaders they once trusted--on levels of psychological burden in the aftermath of such an attack. In this national prospective cohort study, we examined to what extent the PMIE of betrayal exacerbates the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and

Impact of maternal betrayal trauma on parent and child well-being: Attachment style and emotion regulation as moderators.

OBJECTIVE: While high betrayal (HB) traumas (i.e., traumas perpetrated by close others) are associated with reduced maternal and child well-being compared to low betrayal (LB) traumas (i.e., traumas that are noninterpersonal or perpetrated by nonclose others), moderators of these relationships have not yet been examined. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between maternal lifetime betrayal trauma and parent and child well-being while also examining attachment style and emotion regulation as potential moderators. METHOD: Australian mothers (N = 174) of school-age chil

Responses to autobiographical memories involving being a victim or perpetrator of betrayal in people with OCD and community controls.

Mental contamination in people with OCD has been linked to the perceived impact of being betrayed and betraying others. In this study, participants with OCD (N = 56) and community controls (N = 37) were randomised to an induction involving eliciting autobiographical memories of either being betrayed by someone they trusted or betraying someone that trusted them. The OCD group experienced greater increases in state mental contamination and anxiety than the control group, but no differences were observed between groups in urges to wash or drink. Both betrayal conditions elicited similar levels o

High Betrayal Adolescent Sexual Abuse and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Depersonalization in Emerging Adults.

Adolescent sexual abuse can interfere with healthy development. Sexual abuse that is perpetrated by close other(s)-high betrayal-can be additionally harmful, with sexual abuse being linked with dissociation and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Depersonalization, a dissociative subtype characterized by disconnection between oneself and one's body and/or thoughts, may further explain the role of dissociation in NSSI. The purpose of the current study was to: 1) isolate the impact of adolescent sexual abuse on NSSI; and 2) examine depersonalization as a pathway between high betrayal adolescent sexu

It Hurts When You're Close: High Betrayal Sexual Trauma, Dissociation, and Suicidal Ideation in Young Adults.

Sexual trauma (e.g., rape), is associated with dissociation and suicidal ideation (SI). Sexual trauma is additionally harmful when perpetrated by a person(s) who is close or trusted (known as high betrayal). With young adulthood as a high-risk period for mental instability, the purpose of the current study is to examine the roles of high betrayal sexual trauma and dissociation in SI among young adults. Participants (N = 192) were college students who completed the 30-minute online survey. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) found that high betrayal sexual trauma was associated with di

Childhood betrayal trauma, dissociation, and shame impact health-related quality of life among individuals with chronic pelvic pain.

BACKGROUND: High betrayal trauma (HBT), or interpersonal trauma perpetrated by someone close, is linked to dissociation and shame, while trauma perpetrated by someone less close, low betrayal trauma (LBT) is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVE: Child interpersonal trauma is common among women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and can negatively impact physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Our study investigates unexplored connections between these variables. PARTICIPANTS & SETTING: Survey data were analyzed from 96 English-speaking female patie

Acquiring Psychopathy and Callousness Traits: Examining the Influence of Childhood Betrayal Trauma and Adult Dissociative Experiences in a Community Sample.

The study of psychopathy has largely centered on samples of incarcerated offenders with a focus on primary psychopathy traits. Less is known, however, about how experiences of childhood betrayal trauma and dissociation influence the development of these traits in non-institutionalized individuals. In the present study, we utilized structural equation modeling to investigate the relationships among childhood betrayal trauma, adult dissociation, and adult psychopathy traits and callous affect traits in a community sample (N = 746). Childhood betrayal trauma was associated with psychopathy and ca

Betrayal-Based Moral Injury and Mental Health Problems Among Healthcare and Hospital Workers Serving COVID-19 Patients.

One factor potentially driving healthcare and hospital worker (HHW)'s declining mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic is feeling betrayed by institutional leaders, coworkers, and/or others' pandemic-related responses and behaviors. We investigated whether HHWs' betrayal-based moral injury was associated with greater mental distress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to COVID-19. We also examined if these associations varied between clinical and non-clinical staff. From July 2020 to January 2021, cross-sectional online survey data were collected from 1,066 HHWs serv

Innocence betrayed: The impact of grooming and family betrayal on trauma symptoms in adult survivors of child sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships between different forms of sexual grooming, emotional betrayal, and trauma symptoms among adult survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). METHOD: An anonymous online retrospective survey was completed by 342 adult CSA survivors. Participants reported on three types of grooming methods used by perpetrators (Verbal Coercion, Threats/Violence, and Drugs/Alcohol) and two types of emotional betrayal (Perpetrator Betrayal and Family Betrayal). Path analysis was conducted to examine the direct and indirect effects of grooming types on trauma symptoms thr

The well-being of young adults: The implications of multi-type child maltreatment and the mediating role of betrayal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that the nature of the relationship between a victim-survivor and perpetrator of child maltreatment can influence well-being experienced during young adulthood. However, further research is required to substantiate the possible mediating role of betrayal trauma following child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between child maltreatment and psychological well-being experienced during young adulthood by examining the extent of maltreatment, the importance of the type of perpetrator, and the potential mediating role of betrayal trauma following

Teachers' mental health from the perspectives of moral injury and institutional betrayal, and on trauma-sensitive organizational environments: a narrative review.

Teachers' mental health is a critical public health concern in South Korea. The current educational environment, characterized by intensifying parent-teacher conflicts, legal disputes, and increasing administrative burdens, demonstrates the limitations of interpreting these challenges solely through the lens of individual vulnerability or resilience. Moral injury can provide a useful explanatory framework for understanding how chronic occupational stressors and institutional betrayal lead to negative mental health outcomes among teachers. In this narrative literature review, we examine new con

COVID-19 has united patients and providers against institutional betrayal in health care: A battle to be heard, believed, and protected.

In this commentary, researchers, health care consumers, and medical providers reflect on institutional betrayal during the COVID-19 pandemic in American and Canadian health care systems. Examples of institutional betrayal experienced by patients and their family members, as well as medical providers, are described. Although such examples may be more evident to the general public during the current pandemic, they do not represent new problems. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

Fractured trust amidst war: The role of institutional betrayal and childhood maltreatment in shattered world assumptions and multilevel distress.

BACKGROUND: The October 7th, 2023, terrorist attacks and subsequent war in Israel constituted an unprecedented assault on the civilian population, resulting in widespread trauma, a collapse of physical and psychological safety, and civilians' perceptions that the government's actions did not prioritize their safety and interests. This study investigates how the disruption of world assumptions, experiences of institutional betrayal, and childhood maltreatment (CM) contributed to multilevel stress outcomes, affecting Israeli civilians' perceptions of their mind, body, and relationships. Familismo as Structural Oppression Toward Sexual and Gender Minoritized Latines: The Role of Betrayal and Double-Consciousness in Dissociating for the Familia.

Mental health practitioners assess and treat trauma and dissociation by considering the biopsychosocial factors influencing the symptomatology of clients. In this process, clinicians often default to a prescriptive model that inherently assigns generalized cultural values to certain marginalized groups. Particularly for Latines, clinicians may overaccentuate the cultural value of familismo, the centering of family, for all Latine clients. These cultural values often translate into clinicians' expectations that their Latine clients will cherish their familial relationships in ways that make fam

When the father trembles: The body's betrayals, masculine aging, and paternal Authority in Mamdouh Adwan's "on you life relies".

This article reads Syrian poet Mamdouh Adwan's 2000 poem Alayka Tataki' al-Hayah [On You Life Relies], first published in Damascus, Syria, as a cultural text about masculine aging, paternal authority, and embodied vulnerability. It argues that the poem's repeated figure of khiyanat al-jasad [the body's betrayals] does more than aestheticize bodily frailty. Through second-person address, negative anaphora, free-verse fragmentation, and the recurring imperative "die, my father," the poem theorizes old age as a crisis of recognition in which a father once imagined as a sovereign household body is

Does Gender Matter? An Exploratory Study of Cultural Betrayal Trauma and Hallucinations in Latino Undergraduates at a Predominantly White University.

Violence victimization, such as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, has been linked with hallucinations. How abuse-related distress manifests is dependent on a host of factors, including gender, ethnicity, and societal inequality. Cultural betrayal trauma theory may provide insight into hallucinatory experiences for Latinos in the United States, as it is a contextualized framework that identifies societal trauma (e.g., discrimination) as a contributor to the harm of within-group interpersonal violence victimization in minority populations. Though men may experience higher rates of hallucina
