Chemicals in cow milk and soy beverages: Neurotoxicity and neuroprotection.

Cow milk constitutes a fundamental component of the human diet. Along with high nutritional value, contains neuroprotective components, caseins, lactoferrin, phospholipids and tryptophan. However, due to the use of pesticides in agriculture, veterinary drugs in livestock, and the presence of other contaminants, cow milk is frequently contaminated by these chemicals posing a risk to human health, namely through neurotoxicity. Strategies to decrease these contaminants include detoxification via microorganisms. Concomitantly, increased consumption of plant-based protein to substitute animal sourc

Fructose-sweetened beverages induce diurnal redox dysregulation in pediatric MASLD.

BACKGROUND: Plasma glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSH/GSSG) and cysteine/cystine (Cys/CySS) redox couples undergo diurnal variation in adults and are more oxidized in obesity-related conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). There is limited research on redox in children and no data on redox responses to sugars, despite high sugar consumption in this population. This study aimed to describe the diurnal variation of redox couples in children, assess the impact of MASLD, and evaluate responses to fructose versus glucose beverages. METHODS: In a

Patterns of Beverages Consumed and Risk of Incident Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Selected beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, have been reported to influence kidney disease risk, although previous studies have been inconsistent. Further research is necessary to comprehensively evaluate all types of beverages in association with CKD risk to better inform dietary guidelines. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: We conducted a prospective analysis in the Jackson Heart Study, a cohort of black men and women in Jackson, Mississippi. Beverage intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline (2000-20

Amoebic Liver Abscess and Indigenous Alcoholic Beverages in the Tropics.

Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) seen commonly in the tropics is predominantly confined to adult males, especially those who consume locally brewed alcohol, although intestinal amoebiasis occurs in all age groups and in both genders. Whether the role of alcohol in the development of ALA is incidental and casual or whether alcohol is causally implicated has been debated. It has been argued that socioeconomic factors and poor sanitary conditions are the primary culprits that casually link alcohol to ALA. However, there has emerged an abundance of data that implicates alcohol in a more causal role in

Taxation and Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Position of Dietitians of Canada.

Dietitians of Canada recommends that an excise tax of at least 10-20% be applied to sugar-sweetened beverages sold in Canada given the negative impact of these products on the health of the population and the viability of taxation as a means to reduce consumption. For the greatest impact, taxation measures should be combined with other policy interventions such as increasing access to healthy foods while decreasing access to unhealthy foods in schools, daycares, and recreation facilities; restrictions on the marketing of foods and beverages to children; and effective, long-term educational ini

Consumption of methylxanthine-containing beverages and risk of pancreatic cancer.

This paper reviews published studies of a possible relationship of consumption of methylxanthine-containing beverages, primarily coffee, to risk of pancreatic cancer (PC). Certain ecologic studies suggested a possible relation of pancreatic cancer mortality and coffee consumption by country. The findings from case-control studies are not entirely consistent; in general, no significant increased risk with a clear dose-response relationship is reported, but some of the studies suggest the possibility of some increase in risk. The prospective studies reported generally agree that there is no sign

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Childhood Obesity: A Life-Course Perspective.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity represents a major global health challenge. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) remain an important modifiable dietary exposure; however, adolescent beverage behavior is often examined independently of dietary patterns established earlier in life. This narrative review examines SSB consumption and adiposity across the life course, particularly during the first 1000 days as a sensitive period for developing dietary habits. Methods: Targeted literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 2021-13 August 2026). We prioritized

Sugar-sweetened beverages in India: Price elasticity, affordability, and taxation.

Rising consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in India is a significant public health challenge, contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). SSB-attributable deaths exceed 10,000 annually. The associated economic burden is projected to reach 2.47% of India's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2060. This study evaluates the impact of taxation as a policy instrument to reduce SSB consumption in India. Data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 2022-23 household survey and Euromonitor retail sales data were used. SSB affordability was measured

Selenium micro-encapsulation: Innovative strategies for supplementing plant-based beverages.

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans, and one of the new strategies to increase its intake is to fortify foodstuff with Se-bioaccessible species. This study aimed to produce Se-microparticles (selenate, selenite and Se-organic) using combined methods of microencapsulation; fortify commercial plant-based beverages (PBBs); evaluate the stability of microparticles; and estimate the bioaccessibility of Se and its contribution to the Recommended Daily Intake (RDA). Samples and bioaccessible fractions were submitted to acid digestion and Se levels (total and bioaccessible) were qua

Acceptance of oat-based beverages tailored for patients with cancer.

Oat-based beverages are a nutritious product with the potential to support increased nutrient intake of patients with cancer. The aim of this research was to evaluate the sensory acceptance of oat-based beverages and perceptions of oats among patients with cancer as future vehicles for nutrient delivery. In study 1, three flavors of oat-beverages were well accepted without significant difference in liking among flavors or serving temperature, or between patients with cancer and healthy participants. Patients with cancer more frequently rated the beverages as too sweet compared to healthy parti

Overweight adolescents' brain response to sweetened beverages mirrors addiction pathways.

Many adolescents struggle with overweight/obesity, which exponentially increases in the transition to adulthood. Overweight/obesity places youth at risk for serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes. In adults, neural substrates implicated in addiction (e.g., orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), striatum, amygdala, and ventral tegmental area) have been found to be relevant to risk for overweight/obesity. In this study, we examined three hypotheses to disentangle the potential overlap between addiction and overweight/obesity processing by examining (1) brain response to high vs. low calorie b

Review: Diversity of Microorganisms in Global Fermented Foods and Beverages.

Culturalable and non-culturable microorganisms naturally ferment majority of global fermented foods and beverages. Traditional food fermentation represents an extremely valuable cultural heritage in most regions, and harbors a huge genetic potential of valuable but hitherto undiscovered strains. Holistic approaches for identification and complete profiling of both culturalable and non-culturable microorganisms in global fermented foods are of interest to food microbiologists. The application of culture-independent technique has thrown new light on the diversity of a number of hitherto unknown

Alcohol, methylxanthine-containing beverages, and colorectal cancer in Córdoba, Argentina.

The relationship between social class indicators, body mass index (BMI), selected life-style habits (alcohol, coffee, maté and tea drinking) and colorectal cancer was investigated in a case-control study conducted between 1993 and 1997 in Córdoba, Argentina, a relatively high mortality area of colorectal cancer. Cases were 190 patients below age 80 years with incident, histologically confirmed colorectal adenocarcinomas, and controls were 393 patients admitted to hospital for a wide spectrum of acute, non-neoplastic disorders. Higher social class, based on occupation of the head of the househo

Association of Low- and No-Calorie Sweetened Beverages as a Replacement for Sugar-Sweetened Beverages With Body Weight and Cardiometabolic Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: There are concerns that low- and no-calorie sweetened beverages (LNCSBs) do not have established benefits, with major dietary guidelines recommending the use of water and not LNCSBs to replace sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Whether LNCSB as a substitute can yield similar improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors vs water in their intended substitution for SSBs is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of LNCSBs (using 3 prespecified substitutions of LNCSBs for SSBs, water for SSBs, and LNCSBs for water) with body weight and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with
