Assessment of the rabies education among middle secondary school students of southeastern Bhutan.

Rabies is one of the most important zoonotic diseases that mostly affect children. We conducted a rabies education among 129 secondary school children (intervention group = 94 students, control group = 35 students) in two schools in southeast Bhutan and evaluated the effectiveness of the lesson by comparing the knowledge, perception and safety behaviour score about rabies before and after education. We also assessed the knowledge retention capacity of the students at three months post intervention. Our findings indicated that short rabies lesson significantly (P<0.001) improved the mean knowle

Identification of novel mutations causing pediatric cataract in Bhutan, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cataract is an important cause of blindness and visual impairment in children. A large proportion of pediatric cataracts are inherited, and many genes have been described for this heterogeneous Mendelian disease. Surveys of schools for the blind in Bhutan, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka have identified many children with this condition and we aimed to identify the genetic causes of inherited cataract in these populations. METHODS: We screened, in parallel, 51 causative genes for inherited cataracts in 33 probands by Ampliseq enrichment and sequencing on an Ion Torrent PGM. Rare

Human rabies post exposure prophylaxis in Bhutan, 2005-2008: trends and risk factors.

The aim of this study was to understand the use and distribution of human rabies post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccine in Bhutan and to identify risk factors for receiving an incomplete course of the vaccine. We analyzed post exposure treatment records from 28 medical hospitals from 2005 to 2008. Males (59%) accounted for significantly more PEP events than females (41%) across all age groups (P<0.001). Children - particularly 5-9 years of age - received more rabies PEP than other age groups. Animal bite and non-bite accounted for 27% (n=2239) and 16% (n=1303) of rabies PEP, respectively, whi

Sydenham's chorea in a 16-year-old female from Bhutan: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Rheumatic heart disease is a preventable disease. Patients may not present with a typical history of sore throat and polyarthritis but may present with Sydenham's chorea. We should not rely completely on clinical findings to rule out carditis. Echocardiography should be done to rule out subclinical carditis. ABSTRACT: Sydenham's chorea is a major manifestation of rheumatic fever. It occurs primarily in children and is seen rarely after the age of 20 years. We describe a 16-year-old girl who presented with purposeless involuntary movements of her upper and lower limbs. La

Efforts toward the Elimination of Visceral Leishmaniasis in South Asia: A Review of Progress in Bhutan.

Leishmaniases are a group of diseases under the category of neglected tropical diseases targeted for global elimination. However, they continue to pose major clinical and public health problems, especially among those living in poor socioeconomic conditions. Here, we summarize leishmaniasis elimination efforts in Bhutan. Between 1994 and 2022, Bhutan recorded 54 cases of leishmaniasis across 14 of its 20 districts. There are seven species of Phlebotomus and three species of Sergentomyia sand flies documented in the country. At a subnational level, all endemic districts recorded a visceral leis

A Qualitative Risk Assessment of Rabies Reintroduction Into the Rabies Low-Risk Zone of Bhutan.

In Bhutan, dog-mediated rabies has been successfully eliminated from most regions of the country but remains endemic in the Southern region and sporadic incursions are also reported in the East. Elimination of rabies from the southern part of Bhutan is challenged by the porous border with the neighboring states of India which facilitates free and unregulated movement of animals. Around 17 outbreaks of rabies are reported annually in dogs and other domestic animals, posing continuous public health risks and economic losses. Furthermore, due to anthropogenic factors, such as increasing human set

Soil-Transmitted Helminth infections reduction in Bhutan: A report of 29 years of deworming.

Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections affect over 1.5 billion people worldwide. Although prevalent in all age groups, school aged children are a high-risk groups for STH infections. In Bhutan, epidemiological data on STH were collected from western Bhutan in 2003, which found a prevalence of 16.5%. However, little evidence is available on the prevalence of infection at national level. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim to assess the prevalence and intensity of STH infections, and identify significant correlates of STH among students. A school-based survey was conducted in th
