Remote treatment of panic disorder: a randomized trial of internet-based cognitive behavior therapy supplemented with telephone calls.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated a 10-week Internet-based bibliotherapy self-help program with short weekly telephone calls for people suffering from panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. METHOD: After the authors confirmed the diagnosis by administering the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV by telephone, 60 participants were randomly assigned to either a wait-listed control group or a multimodal treatment package based on cognitive behavior therapy plus minimal therapist contact via e-mail. A 10-minute telephone call was made each week to support each participant. Total mean time

A Randomized Controlled Trial of A Gamified Digital Mental Health Intervention for Child Anxiety.

Childhood anxiety is common and represents a public health concern. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) show benefit for improving mental health outcomes and represent one option to increase access to cognitive behavioral therapy skills-but often have low engagement. We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) that examined a gamified DMHI for the treatment of children with mild-to-moderate anxiety. 118 child-parent dyads were randomly assigned to receive a gamified DMHI, digital bibliotherapy, or a waitlist condition. After six weeks, participants completed a post-treatment asses

Randomized trial comparing standard versus light intensity parent training for anxious youth.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of the parent-led intervention Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) relative to a low-dose version of the protocol among children and adolescents with clinically significant anxiety and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHOD: 68 youth (7-17) with anxiety/OCD and their parents were randomized to receive 12 weekly telehealth SPACE sessions (SPACE-Standard) or bibliotherapy plus 4 telehealth sessions over 12 weeks (SPACE-light). After screening, assessments were conducted via videoconferencing at baseline, post-treatment, and one-

Differential effects of manual assisted cognitive behavior therapy in the treatment of recurrent deliberate self-harm and personality disturbance: the POPMACT study.

A total of 480 patients were treated in a large, multicenter randomized trial of a brief form of cognitive therapy, manual-assisted cognitive behavior therapy (MACT) versus treatment as usual (TAU) for recurrent deliberate self-harm. Each patient was randomized after a self-harm episode assessed at an accident and emergency center and followed up over 1 year. The main hypothesis tested was that those allocated to MACT would have a lower proportion of self-harm episodes in the succeeding year. A total of 60% of those allocated to MACT had face-to-face treatment and 430 (90%) of all patients had

Storybook-based communication intervention for girls with Rett syndrome and their mothers.

PURPOSE: Storybook reading provides a natural language learning context in which to support early symbolic communication. In this study, we explored the impact of (1) resting hand splints, (2) light tech augmentative communication systems such as voice-output devices and symbols, and (3) very basic parent training on the symbolic communication and labelling behaviours of six girls with Rett syndrome. METHOD: Mothers and daughters were videotaped as they read familiar and unfamiliar storybooks in their homes. RESULTS: Group and individual data collected from the six girls indicated that they

Augmenting an online self-directed intervention for gambling disorder with a single motivational interview: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the success of gold standard cognitive-behavioral therapy for problem and disordered gambling, the majority of individuals with gambling problems do not seek or receive professional treatment. Thus, the development of less intrusive self-directed interventions has been encouraged. Bibliotherapy for problem gambling has shown promise, both alone and in combination with motivational interviews, but there is still a lack of online self-directed intervention research. The current randomized controlled trial proposes to assess the additive benefit of a single digital motivationa

Chatbot interventions for improving mental health among people in Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

OBJECTIVES: Chatbot-delivered treatments offer tremendous mental health benefits. This systematic review aimed at examining the effectiveness of using chatbots for improving mental health among people in Asia. METHODS: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on standalone chatbot interventions targeting mental health conditions, ranging from mental well-being to clinically relevant mental health symptoms (eg, depression, anxiety, stress, affect, distress, insomnia and psychological well-being), were included. Four electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Medline) were searched until 11

Promoting self-change in cannabis use disorder: Results of a randomized controlled trial after one year.

INTRODUCTION: Self-directed interventions may help close treatment gaps in cannabis use disorder (CUD), particularly for individuals who prefer minimal professional contact. We previously tested a paper-and-pencil workbook, with or without a single motivational interview (MI), in a three-arm randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Canadian adults with CUD were allocated to workbook plus MI (WMI), workbook only (WB), or delayed workbook treatment (DT). The current paper reports outcomes after 9 and 12 months as well as exploratory analyses on workbook usage. Trial outcomes included days and gram

[Effect of different variables on the outcome of various cognitive-behavioral treatment modalities for panic disorder with agoraphobia].

The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is clearly demonstrated in the treatment of panic-disorder with agoraphobia (PDA). Between 70% and 90% of people with PDA obtain an higher global functioning level after CBT, yet symptoms remain in 10 to 30% of participants after treatment termination. The goal of the present study is to find which variables have an effect on different CBT modalities (individual, group, self-help) for persons with moderate and high PDA. Eighty-four persons were randomly assigned to one of three treatment modalities. Evaluations were made before treatment, imme

Treatment of social phobia through pure self-help and therapist-augmented self-help.

BACKGROUND: Self-help for social phobia has not received controlled empirical evaluation. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of pure self-help through written materials for severe social phobia and self-help augmented by five group sessions with a therapist. These conditions were compared with a waiting-list control and standard, therapist-led group therapy. METHOD: Participants with severe generalised social phobia (n=224) were randomised to one of four conditions. Assessment included diagnoses, symptoms and life interference at pretreatment, 12 weeks and at 24 weeks. RESULTS: A larger percent

Comparative efficacy of spirituality, cognitive, and emotional support groups for treating eating disorder inpatients.

Spiritual interventions are rarely used in contemporary treatment programs and little empirical evidence is available concerning their effectiveness. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a spiritual group intervention for eating disorder inpatients. We compared the effectiveness of a Spirituality group with Cognitive and Emotional Support groups using a randomized, control group design. Participants were 122 women receiving inpatient eating disorder treatment. Patients in the Spirituality group tended to score significantly lower on psychological disturbance an

The treatment of social dysfunction in nonpsychotic outpatients. A review.

A sizable proportion (7 to 16 per cent) of psychiatric outpatients suffer from social dysfunction, either as the main complaint or in conjunction with other psychiatric problems. Social skills training is a newly evolved treatment regimen that involves teaching patients new forms of social behavior by their rehearsal within sessions and their practice in real life between sessions. In an overview of controlled studies, social skills training was found to have been useful for up to 16 months follow-up in mainly nonpsychotic socially dysfunctional outpatients. Its effects supersede "no-treatment

Participation and outcome in manualized self-help for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder - a systematic review and metaregression analysis.

There is a growing body of research on manualized self-help interventions for bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Study and treatment dropout and adherence represent particular challenges in these studies. However, systematic investigations of the relationship between study, intervention and patient characteristics, participation, and intervention outcomes are lacking. We conducted a systematic literature review using electronic databases and hand searches of relevant journals. In metaregression analyses, we analyzed study dropout as well as more specific measures of treatmen

Self-help interventions for parenting couples experiencing conflict or relationship distress: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to high levels of couple distress are at increased risk for a range of adjustment problems, including behavioral, emotional, and academic difficulties. These relational burdens can also interfere with adult mental health, the coparenting relationship, and the capacity to provide warm and consistent caregiving. Despite these challenges, many couples delay seeking help until their relationship is seriously deteriorated. This randomized controlled trial investigates the effects of two flexible self-help interventions: the OurRelationship program (OR) and couple-focuse

[Interest of computer-based cognitive behavioral stress management. Feasability of the Seren@ctif program].

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural stress management programs have been studied in many countries. Many reports have shown beyond a doubt their efficacy to reduce perceived stress, anxiety symptoms and to improve quality of life of patients. Considering the very large number of people who could benefit from such programs but are unable to reach them, self-help programs have been offered. First presented as books (bibliotherapy), these programs then became enriched by computing and digital supports. Regrettably, many of the programs of stress management based on the Cognitive behavioural thera

Self-help interventions for depressive disorders and depressive symptoms: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that depressive disorders exist on a continuum, with subthreshold symptoms causing considerable population burden and increasing individual risk of developing major depressive disorder. An alternative strategy to professional treatment of subthreshold depression is population promotion of effective self-help interventions that can be easily applied by an individual without professional guidance. The evidence for self-help interventions for depressive symptoms is reviewed in the present work, with the aim of identifying promising interventions that could inform fut

Ethics-testing an eating disorder recovery memoir: a pre-publication experiment.

BACKGROUND: Narratives (including memoirs and novels) about eating disorders (EDs) are typically published with the intention to benefit readers, but survey evidence suggests that reading such narratives with an active ED may more often be harmful than helpful. To reduce the probability of inadvertent harm and learn more about how narrative reading and EDs interact, a pre-publication study was designed to determine whether or not a recovery memoir should be published. METHODS: 64 participants with a self-reported ED read either the experimental text (The Hungry Anorexic [HA]) or a control tex

Cognitive behavioural therapy for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: A previous Cochrane review (James 2005) showed that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was effective in treating childhood anxiety disorders; however, questions remain regarding (1) the relative efficacy of CBT versus non-CBT active treatments; (2) the relative efficacy of CBT versus medication and the combination of CBT and medication versus placebo; and (3) the long-term effects of CBT. OBJECTIVES: To examine (1) whether CBT is an effective treatment for childhood and adolescent anxiety disorders in comparison with (a) wait-list controls; (b) active non-CBT treatments (i.e. psy
