There are over 100 million bicycle riders in America, according to the National Safety Council, and in the last two years more than 1.25 million accidents have been reported. About 77% of these accidents occurred among children under 15 years old. Nearly 44% of reportable injuries were in the 5-14 year old age group and 30% occurred among children under five years of age, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

This study examined gap choices and crossing behavior in children and adults using an immersive, interactive bicycling simulator. Ten- and 12-year-olds and adults rode a bicycle mounted on a stationary trainer through a virtual environment consisting of a street with 6 intersections. Participants faced continuous cross traffic traveling at 25 mph or 35 mph and waited for gaps they judged were adequate for crossing. Children and adults chose the same size temporal gaps, but children left far less time to spare between themselves and the approaching vehicle when they crossed the intersection. Re

Bicyclist safety at urban intersections is a critical element for encouraging an increase in bicycle commuting. With cyclist injury and fatality rates rising due to collisions with vehicles at signalized intersections, increasing the safety of riders continues to be an important consideration when promoting this mode of transportation. Previous research has addressed crash causality and helped to develop several roadway treatments to improve bicyclist safety, but little has been done to compare and contrast the benefits of the various treatment types. This bicycling simulator study examined th

BACKGROUND: Streetcar or train tracks in urban areas are difficult for bicyclists to negotiate and are a cause of crashes and injuries. This study used mixed methods to identify measures to prevent such crashes, by examining track-related crashes that resulted in injuries to cyclists, and obtaining information from the local transit agency and bike shops.
METHODS: We compared personal, trip, and route infrastructure characteristics of 87 crashes directly involving streetcar or train tracks to 189 crashes in other circumstances in Toronto, Canada. We complemented this with engineering informat

Joint moments are of interest because they bear some relation to muscular effort and hence rider performance. The general objective of this study is to explore the relation between joint moments and pedalling rate (i.e. cadence). Joint moments are computed by modelling the leg-bicycle system as a five-bar linkage constrained to plane motion. Using dynamometer pedal force data and potentiometer crank and pedal position data, system equations are solved on a computer to produce moments at the ankle, knee and hip joints. Cadence and pedal forces are varied inversely to maintain constant power. Re

BACKGROUND: The health benefits of bicycling in older adults with mobility limitation (ML) are unclear. We investigated ML and functional capacity of older cyclists by evaluating their instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), intellectual activity, and social function.
METHODS: On the basis of interviews, 614 community-dwelling older adults (after excluding 63 participants who never cycled) were classified as cyclists with ML, cyclists without ML, non-cyclists with ML (who ceased bicycling due to physical difficulties), or non-cyclists without ML (who ceased bicycling for other reasons

Craniofacial injuries in bicycling accidents are common, yet limited information exists on associated soft tissue injuries. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and anatomic patterns of such injuries, and their association with helmet use and craniofacial fractures. The study included 1543 patients with bicycle injuries from a level 1 trauma center. Retrospective chart review was conducted for patients with craniofacial soft tissue injuries. Craniofacial soft tissue injuries were identified in 646 cyclists (41.9%). Odds of injury increased with years of age [aOR 1.02 (1.01-1.02), P <0

BACKGROUND: A large number of high-income countries are now promoting active commuting to school as an opportunity for adolescents to increase physical activity (PA) and improve their health. Few studies have examined the multiple benefits of active travel to school among adolescents in developing countries, especially in China. Hence, this study aims to estimate the effects of bicycling to school on adolescents' subjective health, physical health, and sickness absence.
METHODS: Self-reported and cross-sectional data from 6,353 school-aged children (12-19 years old) in the 2014-2015 China Edu

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the increasing popularity of cycling for commuting and leisure has led to a corresponding increase in bicycle-related injuries. However, there is a lack of extensive analysis of bicycle-related injuries to the upper limb in the literature.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with conventional bicycle-related injuries of the upper limb was performed. Data on demographics, mechanisms of injury, region of injury, fracture type, management type, and length of hospital stay were extracted and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 177 of 733(24%) patients with bicy

Bicycle utilization continues to increase annually, and this trend was recently accelerated by the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic. There is limited epidemiologic data, however, regarding the prevalence and nature of bicycle-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize trends in bicycle-related injuries. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for bicycle-related injuries from 2012 to 2021. Patient demographic and injury data were collected and analyzed to describe trends in incidence, patient demographics, and injury patterns associated

BACKGROUND: Stress-related symptoms are often the reason that patients with cardiac disease are referred for echocardiographic assessment. We present a method for echocardiographic assessment with concurrent physiological stress where the patient is tested on a semi-supine bicycle, in a half-sitting, tilted position.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The paper is based on a literature search of PubMed and own experience of the method.
RESULTS: Ergometric stress echocardiography can be used for a number of cardiac conditions where an assessment of cardiac and haemodynamic response to physiological stress

The objective was to evaluate the relationship between helmet damage and head injuries in helmeted bicyclists in a sub-study of a large case-control study of bicycle injuries and helmet effectiveness. The setting consisted of seven hospital emergency departments in Seattle, WA. Hospitalized patients and medical examiners cases were included. The participants in the study were helmeted bicyclists who suffered a head injury or who damaged or hit their helmet in a crash. The Snell Memorial Foundation laboratory evaluated the helmets, blinded to crash circumstance and injury diagnosis. Damage was

The first year of the mandatory bicycle helmet laws in Australia saw increased helmet wearing from 31% to 75% of cyclists in Victoria and from 31% of children and 26% of adults in New South Wales (NSW) to 76% and 85%. However, the two major surveys using matched before and after samples in Melbourne (Finch et al. 1993; Report No. 45, Monash Univ. Accident Research Centre) and throughout NSW (Smith and Milthorpe 1993; Roads and Traffic Authority) observed reductions in numbers of child cyclists 15 and 2.2 times greater than the increase in numbers of children wearing helmets. This suggests the

The present report is an analysis of 93 patients (52 male; 41 female) treated in 1981-1983 for maxillofacial fractures sustained in bicycle accidents. These accidents accounted for 7.1% of all facial bone fractures treated during the same period. Most accidents were single vehicle accidents (88%) and took place during the summer months. Of the patients, 65% had mandibular fractures, 35% had midface fractures and 5% had fractures in both the middle and lower thirds of the face. Condylar fractures were by far the most common of the mandibular fractures (67%)--a result which differs from studies

Twenty bicycle riders were fatally injured in Auckland between 1974 and 1984. Eighteen were male and nine aged under 15 years. The age distribution of fatalities corresponds closely to the known age distribution of the cycling population. Few differences in pattern of injury were demonstrable between younger (under 15 years) and older riders. Sixteen died of fatal injury to multiple organ systems. Fourteen had fatal injury to brain, including four with no other significant organ injury. Fatal cardiopulmonary trauma was seen in seven riders and fatal abdominal trauma in seven. Cervical and high
