Microbial recycling cells (MRCs): A new platform of microbial electrochemical technologies based on biocompatible materials, aimed at cycling carbon and nutrients in agro-food systems.

This article reviews the mechanisms that drive nutrients and carbon sequestration from wastewaters by microbial electrochemical technologies (METs). In this framework, a new generation of METs is also presented (to be called microbial recycling cells, MRCs), based on 100%-recyclable materials (biomass-derived char coal, clay, terracotta, paper, ligno-cellulosic plant materials, etc.), which can act as bio-electrodes, separators and structural frames. In traditional METs architectures (based on technological materials such as carbon cloths, plastic panels, membranes, binders), inorganic salts p

Preclinical study on the application of biodegradable pure magnesium mesh in abdominal wall defect repair: Material characterization, biocompatibility, and regenerative mechanisms.

This study evaluates a novel biodegradable magnesium (Mg) mesh for abdominal wall repair. Current synthetic meshes present clinical limitations, while Mg alloys offer favorable mechanical properties and biodegradability that remain underexplored. The Mg mesh was characterized through tensile/burst testing and finite element analysis, demonstrating sufficient strength (initial: 167.2 ± 5.9 N/cm; 1 month: 55.9 ± 1.6 N/cm) to withstand tensile breaking strength of abdominal wall (16 N/cm). Degradation studies revealed faster rates in simulated body fluid (2.62 mm/year) versus Hanks' solution (1.1

Carbonaceous materials derived from corn cob waste via pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization and open burning: contrasting biocompatibility and Cu2+ neurotoxicity modulation in a synaptosome model.

Here, three different types of carbonaceous nanoparticles/materials were obtained from corn cob agricultural waste using different "green" approaches without surface functionalization. Biochars synthesized from corn cobs by two-step pyrolysis at 600 °C (PB), carbon dots synthesized using a hydrothermal approach at 180 °C (CD) and smoke particulate matter (SP) prepared by open burning were comparatively analyzed for biocompatibility and Cu2+ adsorption capacity using a presynaptic rat cortex nerve terminal model (synaptosomes). The PB did not change the extrasynaptosomal levels of inhibitory ne

Biocompatibility of NeoPUTTY™ versus TheraCal PT® and TheraCal LC® pulp-capping materials, and tissue reaction following subcutaneous implantation in rats: Histological and molecular investigation.

BACKGROUND: Materials used for vital pulp therapy should support the natural healing and regeneration of the dental pulp. Ideally, these materials should be biocompatible, bioactive, non-toxic, and noncarcinogenic. Although numerous medicaments are currently available on the market, none fully meet all the criteria required for an ideal material. In recent years, calcium silicate-based materials, known for their bioactivity and biocompatibility, have gained widespread use in dental practice. OBJECTIVES: This in vivo study investigated the tissue response and biological characteristics of mine

Stretchable Encapsulation for Implantable Strain Sensors.

Implantable strain sensors integrated on organ surfaces can monitor organ deformations, such as bladder filling and stomach motility, thereby providing important information about their functional states. A major challenge lies in achieving large strain ranges while ensuring biocompatibility and long-term stability inside physiological fluid environments. Commonly used stretchable materials have relatively high water permeability, which can lead to degradation of sensing performance. This work presents a method to provide highly stretchable, biocompatible, compliant, and stable encapsulation f

Biomaterials-Potential nucleation agents in blood and possible implications.

Blood, simulated body fluids, and many cell culture media are supersaturated solutions with respect to several calcium phosphates. Therefore biomaterials can act as nucleation agents and evoke heterogeneous nucleation of salts on the surface of immersed biomaterials. Depending on the field of application, this can be either beneficial or disadvantageous. Although nucleation from supersaturated solutions is an old and well-known scientific phenomenon it is not standard to test new developed materials with surface analytical methods for their ability to initiate nucleation in vitro. Therefore, t

RGD-Modified Titanium as an Improved Osteoinductive Biomaterial for Use in Dental and Orthopedic Implants.

This study describes the synthesis, surface analysis, and biological evaluation of bioactive titanium surfaces. The aim was to achieve an improved effect on osteoinduction in dental and orthopedic implants. For this purpose, a chemistry was developed, which allows to bind the bioactive cyclopeptide cRGDfK covalently to biomedically used titanium via polyethylene glycol linkers of different lengths. The chemical process is practicable, robust, and metal-free. The resulting chemically modified titanium plates show improved osteoinductive properties. The modification with cRGDfK targets the integ

Development of biodegradable webs of PLA/PCL blends prepared via electrospinning: Morphological, chemical, and thermal characterization.

Biodegradable polymers have a mean role to mimic native tissues and allow cells to penetrate, grow, and proliferate with their advanced features in tissue engineering applications. The physiological, chemical, mechanical, and biological qualities of the surfaces, which are presented from biodegradable polymers, affect the final properties of the scaffolds. In this study, it is aimed to produce fibrous webs by electrospinning method for tissue engineering applications using two different biopolymers, polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL). These polymers are used either alone or in a

A Tunable Calcium Phosphate Coating to Drive in vivo Osseointegration of Composite Engineered Tissues.

Varying degrees of hydroxyapatite (HA) surface functionalization have been implicated as the primary driver of differential osteogenesis observed in infiltrating cells. The ability to reliably create spatially controlled areas of mineralization in composite engineered tissues is of growing interest in the field, and the use of HA-functionalized biomaterials may provide a robust solution to this challenge. In this study, we successfully fabricated polycaprolactone salt-leached scaffolds with two levels of a biomimetic calcium phosphate coating to examine their effects on MSC osteogenesis. Longe

Cartilage repair: surgical techniques and tissue engineering using polysaccharide- and collagen-based biomaterials.

Lesions of articular cartilage have a large variety of causes among which traumatic damage, osteoarthritis and osteochondritis dissecans are the most frequent. Replacement of articular defects in joints has assumed greater importance in recent years. This interest results in large part because cartilage defects cannot adequately heal themselves. Many techniques have been suggested over the last 30 years, but none allows the regeneration of the damaged cartilage, i.e. its replacement by a strictly identical tissue. In the first generation of techniques, relief of pain was the main concern, whic

Fabrication of Living Entangled Network Composites Enabled by Mycelium.

Organic polymer-based composite materials with favorable mechanical performance and functionalities are keystones to various modern industries; however, the environmental pollution stemming from their processing poses a great challenge. In this study, by finding an autonomous phase separating ability of fungal mycelium, a new material fabrication approach is introduced that leverages such biological metabolism-driven, mycelial growth-induced phase separation to bypass high-energy cost and labor-intensive synthetic methods. The resulting self-regenerative composites, featuring an entangled netw

Protein adsorption and clotting time of pHEMA hydrogels modified with C18 ligands to adsorb albumin selectively and reversibly.

This work intended to create a nanostructured biomaterial that would bind albumin in a selective and reversible way in order to inhibit the adsorption of other blood proteins and therefore minimize activation of coagulation. Different levels of C18 ligand have been immobilized on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA). We hypothesize that samples with intermediate amounts of C18 ligand would allow albumin to recognize them and bind through its hydrophobic pockets specific for long chain fatty acids. Surface characterization has confirmed increasing amounts of C18 ligand on pHEMA as the perc
