Biofeedback Modalities Targeting Kyphosis and Lordosis: A Critical Appraisal Topic.

BACKGROUND: Postural deviations such as thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis are prevalent consequences of sedentary behavior, contributing to pain and disability. We aim to review the evidence on biofeedback modalities as active, user-engaged alternatives to passive correction targeting kyphosis and lordosis posture. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore (inception: September 2025) identified studies on adult populations. Primary outcomes were spinal alignment measures; secondary outcomes included muscle activity, pain, usability, and satisfaction.

A review of concurrent sonified biofeedback in balance and gait training.

BACKGROUND: Sonified biofeedback is a subtype of auditory biofeedback that conveys biological data through specific non-verbal sounds. It can be designed to provide augmented biomechanical feedback in near-real-time when provided as "concurrent" biofeedback. As a practice that developed spanning across engineering and the arts, sonified biofeedback can extend beyond simple tones and beeps, towards more fully incorporating music in movement training. Sonified biofeedback may leverage the motivational aspects of music in movement training, the neuroplasticity benefits demonstrated from participa

The effect of biofeedback on nonneurological dysfunctional voiding in children: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of biofeedback (BF) on the rehabilitation of children with nonneurological dysfunctional voiding (NDV). METHODS: RCTs were retrieved from various databases (published from inception to February 29, 2024). The effects of the BF and non-BF treatments were compared. A random-effects model was used to evaluate the combined data. RESULTS: Meta-analysis revealed that BF increased the maximum urinary flow rate (SMD = 3.78, 95% CI 1.33∼6.22), improved urination time (SMD = 5.88, 95% CI 3.75∼8.01), and reduced the postvoid residual (SMD =

Effectiveness of a high fiber diet in improving constipation in patients with defecatory dyssynergy under treatment with anorrectal biofeedback. Exploratory, randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Fiber is the initial treatment in chronic functional constipation. However, its role in the group of patients with defecatory dyssynergy is not well established. The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a high fiber diet in patients with defecatory dyssynergy in the treatment with anorectal biofeedback. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An exploratory, randomized (1:1), double-blind, controlled «add-on» clinical trial was carried out in a reference center in Spain in patients with functional constipation and defecatory dyssynergy according to the ROMEIV criteria.

Mind-Body Interventions for Rehabilitation Medicine: Promoting Wellness, Healing, and Coping with Adversity.

Physical medicine providers work to cure organic aspects of disease while simultaneously enhancing quality of life and well-being. Mind-body interventions are evidence-based, cost-effective approaches to serve these aims. This article enhances provider knowledge and acceptance of the most effective and prevalent mind-body modalities: meditation, guided imagery, clinical hypnosis, and biofeedback. The scientific evidence is strongest for mind-body applications for chronic pain, primary headache, cardiac rehabilitation, and cancer rehabilitation, with preliminary evidence for traumatic brain inj

The use of Resolor (prucalopride) for chronic constipation in women.

Chronic constipation is a common problem among women, is associated with anxiety and depression and can adversely affect quality of life (Mason et al, 2002). Chronic constipation is often unrelieved by simple laxatives, dietary manipulation or lifestyle modification, with other specialist treatment options being invasive and often not widely available. More recently attention has turned to newer prokinetic agents, such as prucalopride (Resolor®), which increase gut motility and intestinal transit, for the relief of chronic constipation. While these are not effective for everyone, there is evid

Novel concepts in the diagnosis, pathophysiology and management of idiopathic megabowel.

A proportion of patients with intractable constipation have persistent dilatation of the bowel, which in the absence of an organic cause is termed idiopathic megabowel (IMB). Whilst uncommon, this condition results in considerable morbidity. Traditional methods of identifying such patients are associated with inherent methodological limitations with anorectal manometry and contrast studies overestimating and underestimating the prevalence of the condition, respectively. Recently, controlled, pressure-based distension during fluoroscopic imaging has allowed more accurate identification of patie

Biofeedback for community-dwelling individuals with urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: To review the role of biofeedback in the management of community-dwelling individuals with urge urinary incontinence (UUI), and to present a practical approach to patient evaluation and treatment selection. METHODS: In view of a lack of objective published information, perspectives on the use of biofeedback in UUI are derived from extrapolation of studies in patients with stress incontinence as well as from the author's personal experience. RESULTS: Through the use of careful baseline evaluations, appropriate exercise and biofeedback treatment for UUI can be selected for specific

Non-surgical treatment for constipation in adults: the place of biofeedback.

The treatment of slow-transit constipation consists of dietary measures combined with a regime of laxatives and enemas. Surgery should only be considered when intractable constipation persists despite these measures. Results, however, are moderate. Functional outlet obstruction, the spastic pelvic floor syndrome, is caused by an abnormal use of a normal pelvic floor muscle. Procedures aiming at weakening pelvic floor function give no long-term good results and may lead to faecal incontinence. Biofeedback treatment, relearning normal muscle function by monitoring pelvic floor EMG and simulating

Cardiovascular pathophysiology from the cardioneural perspective and its clinical applications.

Coronary heart disease and psychological stress factors such as depression are prevalent and associated with high morbidity/mortality; they are also challenging to manage, especially when treated in isolation of each other. Recent advances support an integrated approach to their management that is built on a foundation of an extensive, multi-component network of neurological structures. In this review, we describe this extensive cardioneural network that encompasses the heart, brain, spinal cord, and ganglia throughout the body, and then discuss ambulatory and laboratory-based non-invasive mea

Response of spinal myoclonus to a combination therapy of autogenic training and biofeedback.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical evidence indicates that certain types of movement disorders are due to psychosomatic factors. Patients with myoclonic movements are usually treated by a variety of therapeutic agents. Autogenic training (AT), a recognized form of psychosomatic therapies, is suitable for certain types of neurological diseases. We describe a patient with myoclonus who failed to respond to conventional medical therapy. His symptoms were exaggerated by psychogenic factors, especially anger. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old man was admitted to our hospital, Preventive Welfare Clinic, for sev

A preliminary investigation of prediction of mean arterial pressure after self-regulatory treatments.

This study investigated the ability of pretreatment variables from three different domains (social-demographic, psychological, and psychophysiological) to predict posttreatment mean arterial pressure (MAP) for 59 unmedicated males with mild hypertension who were participating in a cross-cultural (USA-USSR) comparison of autogenic training and thermal biofeedback to a self-relaxation control. The overall multiple regression equation consisted of two variables and indicated that higher diastolic blood pressures during a cold pressor task were predictive of greater MAP reductions while higher sco

Biofeedback for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent condition that currently lacks highly effective therapies for its management. Biofeedback has been proposed as a therapy that may help individuals learn to exert conscious control over sympatho-vagal balance as an indirect method of symptom management. OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of biofeedback-based interventions for IBS in adults and children. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Group Specialized Trials Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled

Self-regulating arousal via pupil-based biofeedback.

The brain's arousal state is controlled by several neuromodulatory nuclei known to substantially influence cognition and mental well-being. Here we investigate whether human participants can gain volitional control of their arousal state using a pupil-based biofeedback approach. Our approach inverts a mechanism suggested by previous literature that links activity of the locus coeruleus, one of the key regulators of central arousal and pupil dynamics. We show that pupil-based biofeedback enables participants to acquire volitional control of pupil size. Applying pupil self-regulation systematica

Improving Postural Balance in Dentoalveolar Malocclusion Patients Using a Vibrotactile Posture Trainer Device.

The biomechanical relationship between the body and teeth suggested that posture imbalance can lead to dentoalveolar malocclusion. A randomized crossover trial was conducted to compare body posture measure using tilt angles of the neck and center of pressure of the malocclusion patients that received vibrotactile biofeedback from the posture trainer device with those who received no feedback. The results showed that the system is associated with quantitative improvements of the body posture in malocclusion patients.
