Amplified recruitment pressure of biofouling organisms in commercial salmon farms: potential causes and implications for farm management.

The development of biofouling on finfish aquaculture farms presents challenges for the industry, but the factors underlying nuisance growths are still not well understood. Artificial settlement surfaces were used to examine two possible explanations for high rates of biofouling in Norwegian salmon farms: (1) increased propagule release during net cleaning operations, resulting in elevated recruitment rates; and (2) potential reservoir effects of farm surfaces. The presence of salmon farms was associated with consistently and substantially (up to 49-fold) elevated recruitment rates. Temporal pa

Comparison of the effects of sublethal concentrations of biofoulants, copper pyrithione and zinc pyrithione on a marine mysid - A multigenerational study.

To determine the effect of copper pyrithione (CuPT) and zinc pyrithione (ZnPT), a set of acute (96 h-LC50) and chronic endpoints was studied in the marine mysid, Neomysis awatschensis. Based on the 1/10 NOECs and NOEC values calculated from 96 h-toxicity test, survival and growth, intermolt duration, feeding, and the number of newborn juveniles were measured by evaluating enzymatic activity of detoxification parameter glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cholinergic biomarker acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the marine mysid exposed to 96 h-NOECs of CuPT and ZnPT for four weeks across three gener

Isolation and performance of ultraviolet tolerant bacterium strain for pretreatment and quorum quenching to control reverse osmosis biofouling.

Conventional biocides and UV disinfection are often ineffective against biofouling in reverse osmosis (RO). This study explores a new approach to combine Staphylococcus sp. SSN, a UV-tolerant quorum quenching (QQ) bacterium isolated from activated sludge and UV treatment to defer the onset of biofouling. Under UV exposure, immobilized Staphylococcus sp. SSN retained QQ activity, reducing biofilm formation (by 81 %), and extracellular polymeric substance production (by 22 %). Within 2 h, the combined UV-QQ treatment achieved 3.5-log bacterial inactivation, outperforming UV alone. The observed e

One-Step Aminomalononitrile-Based Coatings Containing Zwitterionic Copolymers for the Reduction of Biofouling and the Foreign Body Response.

Many biomedical devices benefit from antibiofouling coatings, which can reduce biointerfacial interactions such as protein adsorption and cell attachment. In this study, we synthesized zwitterionic copolymers consisting of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SB) and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AE) via free radical polymerization and combined these copolymers in solution with aminomalononitrile to form zwitterionic coatings in an autopolymerization process. The successful deposition of coatings containing different SB/AE ratios was demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The one-step surface mo

Exploring Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) for Water Quality Sensor's Anti-Biofouling Application: A New Direction for Acoustic Waves.

Biofouling presents numerous challenges across various sectors, including aquaculture, agriculture, infrastructure, and medicine. The development of anti-biofouling techniques remains a significant challenge. In the water industry, biofouling on monitoring sensors substantially compromises the accuracy of measurements by interfering with the sensors' measuring ability. Biofouling also significantly increases the running costs by increasing the frequency of maintenance needed to keep sensors clean and accurate. Consequently, anti-biofouling techniques are widely employed to clean in situ optica

Dual-action prevention of adherent and non-adherent biofouling via slippery, nitric oxide-releasing nanoemulsion-infused porous surfaces.

Contemporary clinical problems, such as medical device failure due to onset infection and thrombosis, pose a significant threat to the care and treatment of critical patients. While infection is typically treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and thrombosis is treated with systemic administration of anticoagulants, these options are less favorable because of the escalation of antibiotic resistance and adverse anticoagulation effects such as excessive bleeding and platelet consumption. Alternative strategies must be considered to address these issues before the current strategies become inef

Visible-light-activated Fe2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles enhance biofouling resistance of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes against marine algae Chlorella vulgaris.

This study investigated the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes with TiO2 and Fe2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles to enhance their hydrophilicity and biofouling resistance against the marine microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. It is a common freshwater and marine microalga that readily forms biofilms on membrane surfaces, leading to significant flux decline and increased operational costs in ultrafiltration processes. The microalgae cells and their extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) adhere to the membrane surface, creating a dense fouling layer that impedes water permeation.

Effects of predator movement patterns on the biofouling layer during gravity-driven membrane filtration in treating surface water.

Biological predation has a significant effect on biofouling layers in gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration systems. However, the detailed process of predatory activities is still not well known. This study explored the effects of predator movement patterns on the biofouling layer at different temperatures and the factors affecting the stable flux level. The results indicated that Demospongiae, Spirotrichea and Saccharomycetes were the main species, with the body contracting or rotating in one position at 5 °C, and Litostomatea accounted for 55.1% at 10 °C. The weak agility of these species

Water-Triggered Segment Orientation of Long-Lasting Anti-Biofouling Polyurethane Coatings on Biomedical Catheters via Solvent Exchange Strategy.

The formation of biofilm and thrombus on medical catheters poses a significant life-threatening concern. Hydrophilic anti-biofouling coatings upon catheter surfaces with complex shapes and narrow lumens are demonstrated to have the potential in reducing complications. However, their effectiveness is constrained by poor mechanical stability and weak substrate adhesion. Herein, a novel zwitterionic polyurethane (SUPU) with strong mechanical stability and long-term anti-biofouling is developed by controlling the ratio of sulfobetaine-diol and ureido-pyrimidinone. Once immersed in water, as-synthe

Doped diamond-like carbon coatings for surgical instruments reduce protein and prion-amyloid biofouling and improve subsequent cleaning.

Doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings offer potential antifouling surfaces against microbial and protein attachment. In particular, stainless steel surgical instruments are subject to tissue protein and resilient prion protein attachment, making decontamination methods used in sterile service departments ineffective, potentially increasing the risk of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease during surgical procedures. This study examined the adsorption of proteins and prion-associated amyloid to doped DLC surfaces and the efficacy of commercial cleaning chemistries applied to these spiked surf

Covalent Engineering of a Durable Zwitterionic Sulfobetaine Interface on Titanium via Phosphonate Bridging and Anhydride Activation for Biofouling Resistance.

Biofouling of titanium implants, initiated by nonspecific protein adsorption and followed by bacterial and cellular adhesion, remains a critical challenge that compromises long-term implant performance. Herein, we report a covalent interfacial engineering strategy to construct a robust zwitterionic sulfobetaine interface on titanium via a stepwise grafting approach. This method integrates phosphonate anchoring, maleic anhydride activation, and subsequent ring-opening immobilization of sulfonated amines, enabling the formation of a chemically stable and high-density zwitterionic layer directly

Nano-engineering of a thermoplastic compound with CuO nanoparticles for the development of safe antimicrobial and anti-biofouling fish cage nets.

The occurrence of biofouling is the most common problem that may arise on the surface of fish cage nets in freshwater and the marine environment. The issue not only induces structural damage to the netting because of the progressive increase in weight but also reduces the freshwater exchange and oxygen flow inside the cage, possibly leading to health problems for the farmed fish. Regular cleaning or inclusion of anti-fouling agents in the fish net cage material are typical methods to avoid biofouling growth and proliferation. Both are considered costly and pose health and environmental risks.

The quantification of surgical flow disruptions secondary to fogging and biofouling of endoscopic lens during endoscopic skull base surgeries.

PURPOSE: Despite significant progress in field of endoscopy, lens contamination (LC) continues to plague endoscopic surgeries. Apart from being an ergonomic nuisance, it potentially contributes to adverse surgical outcomes. The literature on the problem of LC during endoscopic skullbase surgeries (ESBSs) is lacking. The current study was conducted to address this lacuna. METHODS: In this study, operative videos of ESBSs performed by the author were retrospectively analysed. The videos were edited on Apple iMovie to identify surgical flow disruptions (SFDs) due to LC. The total number and dura

Desiccation as a mitigation tool to manage biofouling risks: trials on temperate taxa to elucidate factors influencing mortality rates.

The desiccation tolerance of biofouling taxa (adults and early life-stages) was determined under both controlled and 'realistic' field conditions. Adults of the ascidian Ciona spp. died within 24 h. Mortality in the adult blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis occurred within 11 d under controlled conditions, compared with 7 d when held outside. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was the most desiccation-tolerant taxon tested (up to 34 d under controlled conditions). Biofouling orientated to direct sunlight showed faster mortality rates for all the taxa tested. Mortality in Mytilus juveniles

A Multifunctional Lasso-like Peptide-Based Electrochemical Biosensor: Overcoming Biofouling and Enzymatic Degradation for High-Fidelity Immunoglobulin G Assay.

The reliable electrochemical detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in complex biological fluids is severely hampered by nonspecific protein fouling and enzymatic degradation. Inspired by natural lasso peptides, we engineer a multifunctional lasso-like peptide (LaP) composed entirely of D-amino acids that uniquely integrates a terminal cysteine anchoring domain, a zwitterionic antifouling segment, and a specific IgG recognition segment into a single topology-constrained architecture. The covalently closed lasso topology sterically restricts protease access to cleavage-sensitive peptide bonds, whi

Potassium Ferrate as a Novel Anti-Biofouling Agent for Invasive Freshwater Mussels: Multi-Omics Insights and Pilot-Scale Validation.

Invasive species like freshwater mussels extensively colonize water distribution systems, posing a significant threat to the safety and performance of hydraulic infrastructure. The demand for innovative technologies that balance efficacy, environmental safety, and sustainability for biofouling control is growing. This study explores the potential of potassium ferrate [Fe(VI)], a green oxidant, as an effective antifouling agent. Using Limnoperna fortunei as a model organism, we demonstrated that Fe(VI) exerts dose-dependent control over biofouling. Larval viability decreased by 62.48% (p < 0.05

Catch my drift? Between-farm dispersal of biofouling waste from salmon pen net cleaning: Potential risks for fish health.

Biofouling is a serious challenge for global salmon aquaculture and farmers have to regularly clean pen nets to avoid impacts on stock health and farms' structural integrity. The removed material is released into the surrounding environment. This includes cnidarian species such as hydroids, whose nematocyst-bearing fragments can impact gill health and fish welfare. There is also increasing evidence of the association of parasites and pathogens with biofouling organisms and cleaning fragments. It is unknown whether and how far local current regimes disperse biofouling material and whether this

Cross-Linkable Polymer-Based Multi-layers for Protecting Electrochemical Glucose Biosensors against Uric Acid, Ascorbic Acid, and Biofouling Interferences.

The lifetime of implantable electrochemical glucose monitoring devices is limited due to the foreign body response and detrimental effects from ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) interferents that are components of physiological media. Polymer coatings can be used to shield biosensors from these interferences and prolong their functional lifetime. This work explored several approaches to protect redox polymer-based glucose biosensors against such interferences by designing six targeted multi-layer sensor architectures. Biological interferents, like cells and proteins, and UA and AA interfer

Coral skeletal tin and copper concentrations at Pohnpei, Micronesia: possible index for marine pollution by toxic anti-biofouling paints.

We present 40 year-long skeletal chronologies of tin (Sn) and copper (Cu) from an annually-banded coral (Porites sp.) collected from Pohnpei Island, Micronesia (western equatorial Pacific). Both the elements are present in antifouling marine paints and are released inadvertently into ambient seawater. Especially, Sn has often been used in the form of tributyltin (TBT). Based on a stepwise pretreatment examination, Sn and Cu both inside and outside the aragonite lattice of the coral skeleton show a potential for providing marine pollution indicators. High values of extra-skeletal Cu/Ca and Sn/C

Copper nanowire network as a breathable anti-biofouling layer on gas-permeable membranes for long-term electrochemical dissolved oxygen monitoring.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a central metric of aquatic ecosystem function, yet long-term, in situ electrochemical DO monitoring remains limited by biofouling: microbial colonization and biofilm growth progressively block oxygen access and destabilize amperometric currents over time. Copper is an attractive antifouling material because it can inactivate bacteria through contact-mediated membrane damage coupled with Cu+/Cu2+ release and redox-driven oxidative stress. However, conventional Cu film layers often restrict analyte diffusion due to their dense or aggregated morphologies, accelerating se
