Due to their well-characterized neural development and high genetic homology to mammals, zebrafish (Danio rerio) have emerged as a powerful model organism in the field of biological psychiatry. Here, we discuss the molecular psychiatry of zebrafish, and its implications for translational neuroscience research and modeling central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In particular, we outline recent genetic and technological developments allowing for in vivo examinations, high-throughput screening and whole-brain analyses in larval and adult zebrafish. We also summarize the application of these mole

As psychedelic compounds gain traction in psychiatry, there is a need to consider the active mechanism to explain the effect observed in randomized clinical trials. Traditionally, biological psychiatry has asked how compounds affect the causal pathways of illness to reduce symptoms and therefore focus on analysis of the pharmacologic properties. In psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP), there is debate about whether ingestion of the psychedelic alone is thought to be responsible for the clinical outcome. A question arises how the medication and psychotherapeutic intervention together might

Chronobiology is a field that studies the effects of time on biological systems. Periodicity is of particular interest. The master biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus controls daily rhythms of core body temperature, rest-activity cycle, physiological and behavioral functions, psychomotor functions and mood in humans. The clock genes are involved in the generation of the circadian rhythms and the biological clock is synchronized to solar day by direct photic inputs. Various circadian rhythm abnormalities have been demonstrated in mood disorders such as unipolar depression, bipolar d

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the oldest biological treatments in psychiatry. ECT appeared in Europe in the 1930s. During the past century, it underwent several advances, setbacks, and successive adaptations. Despite its stigmatizing media coverage, it maintains its usefulness in current psychiatric clinical practice. This paper aims to provide a summary of the history of ECT, its present state, and its future. It covers the long history of ECT, the requirements for informed consent, most accepted techniques, clinical indications, and required staff training. Additionally, we discu

OBJECTIVE: Every available approach should be used to advance the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Biological systems are important for the behavioral problems of children. Close examination of nonhuman animals and the biology and behavior that they share with humans is an approach that must be used to advance the clinical work of child psychiatry.
METHOD: We review here how model systems are used to contribute to significant insights into childhood psychiatric disorders. Model systems have not only demonstrated causality of risk factors for psychiatric pathophysiology, but have also

This essay reviews the history and evolution of the antipsychiatry movement. Radical antipsychiatry over several decades has changed from an antiestablishment campus-based movement to a patient-based consumerist movement. The antecedents of the movement are traced to a crisis in self-conception between biological and psychoanalytic psychiatry occurring during a decade characterized by other radical movements. It was promoted through the efforts of its four seminal thinkers: Michel Foucault in France, R. D. Laing in Great Britain, Thomas Szasz in the United States, and Franco Basaglia in Italy.

The treatment of psychiatric disorders remains a significant challenge in part due to imprecise diagnostic criteria and incomplete understanding of the molecular pathology involved. Current diagnostic and pharmacological treatment guidelines use a uniform approach to address each disorder even though psychiatric clinical presentation and prognosis within a disorder are known to be heterogeneous. Limited therapeutic success highlights the need for a precision medicine approach in psychiatry, termed precision psychiatry. To practice precision psychiatry, it is essential to research and develop m

The advent of amyloid-targeting therapies and biomarker-based risk stratification has transformed the understanding of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. These conditions are now recognized as chronic, detectable and modifiable, often presenting decades before clinical symptoms appear. While this paradigm shift enables earlier intervention, it also raises ethical and psychological challenges that necessitate a redefined role for psychiatry. Instead of merely supporting late-stage care, psychiatry is well-placed to facilitate risk communication, promote resilience, and encourage adaptiv

The year 2006 marked the 150th Birthday of Emil Kraepelin and Sigmund Freud. Kraepelin and Freud were two very different yet very similar men. The comparison between their biographies shows many parallels in their lives and personalities. They were, in their time, the two most influential individuals in psychiatry. They wrote and thought about similar topics in the field yet came to quite different conclusions. Both did not show public respect for each other but wrote about the importance of integrating their respective approaches into the study of the mind/brain problem. Psychiatry today cont

BACKGROUND: The number of people with diseases of the schizophrenia spectrum in old age will increase significantly in the coming years. In the literature the topics of schizophrenia and delusional disorders in older and old people are inadequately represented.
AIM: This article gives an overview of the most important diagnostic and differential diagnostic characteristics. Another important aspect is the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options in old age.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The S3 guidelines of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics (DGPP

The thesis of this article is that a Darwinian perspective can provide medical sexology with a new theoretical framework which is useful to clarify the relationship between the evolutionary bases of human sexuality and the sex-specific vulnerability to different sexual disorders. Evolutionary theory predicts that the relative parental investment of the sexes in their offspring is associated with different mating strategies in males and females. Individuals of the sex that invests more in offspring should be more discriminative in their sexual interactions because the costs of making a poor mat

Abuse of medicines and alcohol pose particular problems with those carrying out professional work involving movement (drivers, crane operators etc.). Most accidents are caused by ethyl alcohol, however, other substances cannot be excluded, either. This paper has been aimed at the verification of the efficiency of thin-layer chromatography and tests applied in toxicological analyses of acute poisonings in the detection of lower concentrations of certain addictive medicines. The studies were carried out on biological material (urine) of subjects who had been given, for therapeutic purposes, incr

UNLABELLED: Bright light (BL) treatment is a new biological treatment used in psychiatry. The probable mechanisms of action of BL treatment are synchronisation of biological rhythms and increase of serotonin transmission in the human brain. The main indication for BL treatment is seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Indications, tolerance and mechanism of action of BL treatment are still under exploration.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To present 3 years of experience from the treatment of different psychiatric disorders with BL.
METHOD: The examined group consisted of 104 out-patients with different diag

Temperament refers to enduring, biologically rooted affective dispositions that influence how individuals experience and regulate emotion. Although central to classical psychiatry, from Kraepelin's manic-depressive illness to Akiskal's affective styles, temperaments have been largely excluded from modern nosology and psychoanalytic theory. This omission has contributed to diagnostic confusion, particularly in differentiating cyclothymic temperament from borderline personality disorder and hyperthymic temperament from narcissistic personality disorder. While these conditions share surface simil

Nearly all psychiatric diseases involve alterations in subjective, lived experience. The scientific study of the biological basis of mental illness has generally focused on objective measures and observable behaviors, limiting the potential for our understanding of brain mechanisms of disease states and possible treatments. However, applying methods designed principally to interpret objective behavioral measures to the measurement and extrapolation of subjective states presents a number of challenges. In order to help bridge this gap, we draw on the tradition of phenomenology, a philosophical

Jerome Wakefield criticizes my biostatistical analysis of the pathological-as statistically subnormal biological part-functional ability relative to species, sex, and age-for its lack of a harm clause. He first charges me with ignoring two general distinctions: biological versus medical pathology, and disease of a part versus disease of a whole organism. He then offers 10 counterexamples that, he says, are harmless dysfunctions but not medical disorders. Wakefield ends by arguing that we need a harm clause to explain American psychiatry's 1973 decision to declassify homosexuality. I reply, fir

Through the use of case reports, this article reviews frequent causes that origin the need for psychiatric intervention in patients hospitalized in medical and surgical wards. Particular diagnosis aspects are focused, so is the necessity of integration of the biological, psychological and social dimensions of the patient. The integrated approach by the various members of the medical staff is also emphasised. The cases presented were observed in the Liaison Psychiatry Consult of the Psychiatry Service of Hospital Santa Maria, in Lisbon, between November 2007 and January 2008. Seven cases were s

The systematic study of the karyotype in Adult Psychiatry reveals among the group of periodical psychoses the existence of the 3-D Syndrome, marked by long clinical cycles, a course towards a dementia, the presence of a X-dysgonosomy with mosaicism, a relative and better clinical response with the use of lithium than with the use of tricyclic antidepressants. These characteristics discriminate the 3-D syndrome from the periodical manic depressive psychosis, which neither includes the course towards a dementia nor does it include until now identified cellular abnormalities. From the anatomical

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are highly frequent features in a range of child and adolescent psychiatric conditions. However, it is commonly not clear if such sleep problems represent symptomatic features of, comorbidities of, or risk factors for these conditions. It is believed that underlying dysfunction in the daily biological (circadian) clock may play important roles in the etiology of many sleep disorders, and circadian rhythm changes are reported in a number of neuropsychiatric conditions. The aim of this review was to explore the key identifying features of circadian rhythm disorders
