Low Back Biomechanics during Repetitive Deadlifts: A Narrative Review.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSHeavy deadlifting is used as a screening tool or training protocol for recruitment and retention in physically-demanding occupations, especially in the military. Spinal loads experienced during heavy deadlifts, particularly shearing forces, are well above recommended thresholds for lumbar spine injury in occupational settings. Although members of the noted occupation likely have stronger musculoskeletal systems compared to the general population, experiencing shearing forces that are 2 to 4 times larger than the threshold of injury, particularly under repetitive deadli

The association of Le Fort midfacial fractures with frontobasal injuries: a 17-year review of 125 cases, reflections on biomechanics, classifications and treatment.

The frequency of midface and frontobasal fractures has increased over the past 40 years despite the improvement and stringent regulation implemented on modern safety equipment (belts, helmets…). This observation might be correlated with the progress of radiodiagnosis tools. Literature was reviewed according to Prisma guidelines. We searched for reviewed articles, published between January 2000 and December 2017, through Medline (Pubmed) online databases and ScienceDirect, using the following MeSH Keywords: "Le Fort classification", "Le Fort fracture", "Frontobasal fracture", "skull base fractu

A Systematic Review of the Normal Sacroiliac Joint Anatomy and Adjacent Tissues for Pain Physicians.

BACKGROUND: The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) forms a complex joint and has shown to be underappreciated in its involvement with lower back pain. Research efforts have intensified on SIJ anatomy and biomechanics because of its predisposing position to pain and dysfunction in individuals suffering from lower back discomfort. Previous work has focused on SIJ anatomy including bone and joint structure, innervation, as well as biomechanics and the treatment of SIJ pain. However, to date, no review exists describing the range of 'normal' anatomic features of the SIJ. OBJECTIVES: To describe the normal ap

Tetrapod-like pelvic girdle in a walking cavefish.

Fishes have adapted a number of different behaviors to move out of the water, but none have been described as being able to walk on land with a tetrapod-like gait. Here we show that the blind cavefish Cryptotora thamicola walks and climbs waterfalls with a salamander-like diagonal-couplets lateral sequence gait and has evolved a robust pelvic girdle that shares morphological features associated with terrestrial vertebrates. In all other fishes, the pelvic bones are suspended in a muscular sling or loosely attached to the pectoral girdle anteriorly. In contrast, the pelvic girdle of Cryptotora

Biomechanics of hearing in katydids.

Animals have evolved a vast diversity of mechanisms to detect sounds. Auditory organs are thus used to detect intraspecific communicative signals and environmental sounds relevant to survival. To hear, terrestrial animals must convert the acoustic energy contained in the airborne sound pressure waves into neural signals. In mammals, spectral quality is assessed by the decomposition of incoming sound waves into elementary frequency components using a sophisticated cochlear system. Some insects like katydids (or bushcrickets) have evolved biophysical mechanisms for auditory processing that are r

Comparative evaluation of various miniplate systems for the repair of mandibular corpus fractures.

Miniplates have been used during the last decade to facilitate stability between bony fragments in the maxillofacial region and are currently the preferred surgical method for the fixation of fractures and osteotomies. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the biomechanical behaviors of six different types of miniplates used to reconstruct mandibular body fractures: Group 1 (straight, 2 holes, 12.0 mm spacing), Group 2 (straight, 4 holes, 9.0 spacing), Group 3 (straight, 6 holes, 9.0 mm spacing), Group 4 (L-shaped, 4 holes, 9.0 mm spacing, right hand plate), Group 5 (Y-shaped, 5 ho

Bracing for scoliosis.

Bracing is the oldest treatment known for scoliotic spinal deformity. The relative advantages to the use of bracing have been directly related to the etiology of the deformity and the flexibility of the spine at the time that a decision is made regarding the use of a brace. In skeletally immature patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the advantages to bracing are clear. In many instances, prompt recognition and appropriate bracing can arrest the progression of this form of deformity, and, in so doing, the need for any surgery may be avoided completely. On the other hand, in skeletally

[Polishing up functional dermatopathology, dermometrology and mechanobiology].

Dermatopathology is a tool using the microscopic examination for diagnosing cutaneous diseases. The frontiers of its field of interest were extended by exploring the physiopathology of skin functional properties. An example is provided by the evaluation of alterations of skin suppleness in various connective tissue disorders. This approach takes profit from both conventional histology and histochemistry. Immunohistology targeting dermal dendrocytes reveals their various shapes reflecting the modifications in tensegrity under the control of mechanobiology. The latter property is an indicator of

Failure of trabecular bone with simulated lytic defects can be predicted non-invasively by structural analysis.

Pathologic fracture is a significant risk for patients afflicted with metastatic or benign skeletal tumors. The quandary for physicians who treat these patients is that after making the diagnosis they must try to predict the load bearing capacity of the involved bone and the fracture risk from images seen in radiological examinations. Since bone fails at a relatively constant strain independent of density we demonstrate that using a mechanics of materials approach that the cross-sectional structural properties of the bone most affected by the lytic defect governs the load bearing capacity of t

ETIOLOGY OF DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASES: Etiology of degenerative joint diseases is still not clearly understood and there is no specific management for this group of diseases. Various pathological conditions cause damage of the articular cartilage and lead to clinically and radiographically recognized impairment. Biomechanical, metabolic, genetic factors, inflammation and other risk factors contribute to development of osteoarthrosis. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASES: Osteoarthrosis is characterized by progressive erosion of articular cartilage and bone overgrowth at the joint m

Impact response of the intervertebral disc in a finite-element model.

STUDY DESIGN: A three-dimensional nonlinear poroelastic finite-element model of a vertebra disc was used to analyze the biomechanical effects of impact loading on the spinal segment. OBJECTIVES: To predict changes in biomechanical parameters such as intradiscal pressure, dynamic stiffness, stresses in the endplate region, and the shock-absorbing mechanism of the spine under different impact duration/loading rates, and to investigate the relation between the rate of loading and the fracture potential of the vertebral body. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is not practical to discern the role of

Adaptation of a planar microbiaxial optomechanical device for the tubular biaxial microstructural and macroscopic characterization of small vascular tissues.

Murine models of disease are a powerful tool for researchers to gain insight into disease formation, progression, and therapies. The biomechanical indicators of diseased tissue provide a unique insight into some of these murine models, since the biomechanical properties in scenarios such as aneurysm and Marfan syndrome can dictate tissue failure and mortality. Understanding the properties of the tissue on the macroscopic scale has been shown to be important, as one can then understand the tissue's ability to withstand the high stresses seen in the cardiac pulsatile cycle. Alterations in the bi

Multimodal biophysical markers of neurodegeneration: Morphology, mechanics, and thermodynamics.

The identification of novel noninvasive biomarkers remains a major challenge in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. Significant efforts focus on fluid biomarkers, including proteins, peptides, and miRNAs, detectable in blood plasma and peripheral blood cells. Here, we review recent findings on blood plasma and peripheral blood cells physical parameters in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis emphasizing atomic force microscopy and calorimetry assay. Alterations in morphology, nanostructure, and stiffness of red blood cells and platelets, together

Distinct motors, shared mechanics: unifying principles of microbial gliding.

Gliding motility is one of the more elegant tricks in the microbial playbook, allowing cells to move smoothly along an external surface. Unlike swimming in bulk fluid, gliding requires contact with a biotic or abiotic surface, imposing strong physical constraints on how forces are generated, transmitted, and dissipated. It is an active, energy-dependent process that operates without flagella, instead relying on specialized molecular machines that couple dynamic surface adhesins to motion. In this mini-review, we summarize recent advances that illuminate how distinct molecular motors converge o

Biomechanics of the finger pad in response to torsion.

Surface skin deformation of the finger pad during partial slippage at finger-object interfaces elicits firing of the tactile sensory afferents. A torque around the contact normal is often present during object manipulation, which can cause partial rotational slippage. Until now, studies of surface skin deformation have used stimuli sliding rectilinearly and tangentially to the skin. Here, we study surface skin dynamics under pure torsion of the right index finger of seven adult participants (four males). A custom robotic platform stimulated the finger pad with a flat clean glass surface, contr

The spatial distribution of thin filament activation influences force development and myosin activity in computational models of muscle contraction.

Striated muscle contraction is initiated by Ca2+ binding to, and activating, thin filament regulatory units (RU) within the sarcomere, which then allows myosin cross-bridges from the opposing thick filament to bind actin and generate force. The amount of overlap between the filaments dictates how many potential cross-bridges are capable of binding, and thus how force is generated by the sarcomere. Myopathies and atrophy can impair muscle function by limiting cross-bridge interactions between the filaments, which can occur when the length of the thin filament is reduced or when RU function is d

Contractile Properties of Vaginal Tissue.

The vagina is an important organ of the female reproductive system that has been largely understudied in the field of biomechanics. In recent years, some research has been conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the vagina, but much has focused on characterizing the passive mechanical properties. Because vaginal contractions play a central role in sexual function, childbirth, and development and treatment of pelvic floor disorders, the active mechanical properties of the vagina must be also quantified. This review surveys and summarizes published experimental studies on the active p
