Highly Sensitive, Low-Energy-Consumption Biomimetic Olfactory Synaptic Transistors Based on the Aggregation of the Semiconductor Films.

Artificial olfactory synaptic devices with low energy consumption and low detection limits are important for the further development of neuromorphic computing and intelligent robotics. In this work, an ultralow energy consumption and low detection limit imitation olfactory synaptic device based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) was prepared. The aggregation state of poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-selenophene) (PTDPP) semiconductor films is modulated by adding unfavorable solvents and annealing treatments to obtain excellent charge transfer and gas synaptic properties. The regulated OFET d

Isotropically Robust Hydrogel with Biomimetic Multilayer Fibrous Architecture.

Soft materials like hydrogels hold great promise for biomedical and engineering applications. While various strengthening and toughening methods have been developed, they often produce anisotropic structures or require specific liquid conditions to maintain enhanced mechanical properties. Inspired by the hierarchical collagen architecture of articular cartilage, we report here a biomimetic multilayer fibrous hydrogel that overcomes these limitations. Through controlled stacking of aligned fibrous monolayers, we create a hierarchical structure exhibiting exceptional isotropic mechanical propert

Textile Encoding Inspired by Langer Lines via Elastically Graded Embroidered Tessellations.

Morphological anisotropies and nonlinear mechanical properties shape the kinematic agility of organisms and engineered structures. Tissues, such as skin, act as biological metamaterials whose internal structures, such as packed collagen fibers, produce nonlinear and directional responses. Similarly, hierarchical thread packing governs the mechanical response of textiles. However, the capability of encoding textiles at the fabric level and at a sufficient resolution remains limited. Embroidering triangularly tiled zigzag patterns of inextensible thread on a stretchable fabric is demonstrated to

From Native Glycosaminoglycans to Mimetics: Design, Mechanisms, and Biomedical Applications.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are essential regulators of numerous biological processes through their interactions with growth factors, chemokines, cytokines, and enzymes. Their structural diversity and heterogeneity, however, limit reproducibility and translational use, as native GAGs are typically obtained from animal-derived sources with notable batch-to-batch variability. To overcome these challenges, a wide range of GAG mimetics has been developed with the aim of replicating or modulating the biological functions of native GAGs while offering improved structural definition, accessibility, and

Heterodimers of zinc and free-base chlorophyll derivatives co-assembled in biomimetic chlorosomal J-aggregates.

Light-harvesting antennas are one of the most important types of apparatus that use solar energy for natural and artificial photosynthesis. Bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) and chlorophyll (Chl) pigments play key roles in absorbing photons from the sun, migrating/transferring the singlet excitation energy, and transferring electrons. Chlorosomes, the main light-harvesting antennas of photosynthetic green bacteria, contain self-aggregates composed of a large number of BChl-c, d, e, and f molecules without any assistance from peptides, and such J-aggregates transfer the harvested energy to BChl-a pigm

The effect of various bulk filling techniques on the mechanical and structural characteristics of class I biomimetic composite dental fillings.

Tooth degradation develops easily over time from initial caries to deeper cavities. The quality and durability of restorations are crucial in a patients' life, and it is primarily determined by the mechanical properties of the restorations. Clinicians and engineers apply biomimetic science in dentistry to mimic the natural design of the teeth and emphasize careful material selection as well as bond strength between the tissue and artificial material. The aim of this research was to develop and compare five different bulk filling restoration techniques for high C-factor (5.0) Class I cavities a

A novel biomimetic strategy for mimicking amelogenesis to repair enamel.

According to the principle of minimal invasiveness in modern dentistry, biomimetic remineralization therapy constitutes a significant strategy for the prevention and treatment of early enamel caries. Based on the three "key events" of amelogenesis in vivo, silk fibroin (SF) combined with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) successfully formed an SF/CMC composite, and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was then used to form an SF/CMC-ACP nanocomposite with remineralization properties. In our study, SF was used as a template protein for biomimetic amelogenin, ACP was stabilized with CMC and the reminera

A biomimetic strip for standardized evaluation of herbicide deposition dynamics.

Superhydrophobic material design has predominantly relied on direct structural replication of singular natural archetypes, such as the lotus leaf. While this biomimetic strategy has driven significant progress, it fundamentally fails to translate the dynamic droplet super-repellency into universally applicable predictive models. Here, we report a biomimetic laboratory toolkit designed to overcome the variability of natural leaves and establish a standardized paradigm for herbicide formulation screening. By integrating the high-ridge architecture of C3 grasses with the dense-groove networks of

Erythrocyte Membrane Incorporation Modulates the Stability and Fusion-Associated Behavior of Biomimetic Liposomes.

This study investigates how membrane composition governs the stability and fusogenic behavior of biomimetic hybrid liposomes composed of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and red blood cell (RBC) membrane fragments. While prior work on RBC-derived hybrid systems has largely focused on biological performance metrics such as circulation time, cellular uptake, and immune evasion, the biophysical and thermodynamic consequences of membrane hybridization at the molecular level remain poorly explored. Here, we address this gap through a systematic, multitechnique physicochemical characterization of a series o

speed-induced passive depth stabilization in a biomimetic underwater vehicle with a swim bladder.

A nonlinear mathematical model describing the vertical motion of a biomimetic underwater vehicle equipped with a swim bladder is developed. For a passive bladder that changes its volume under hydrostatic pressure, the system can achieve depth stabilization through a speed-induced mechanism when the lever-arm geometry (relative positions of the swim bladder and lifting surfaces) is favorable; otherwise stabilization is not possible. Using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, analytical stability conditions are obtained in closed form, revealing a lower onset speed that is set by a simple coupling betwe

Stimuli-Responsive Biomimetic Nanomedicines for Targeted Therapy in Ischemic Stroke: Design Principles, Preclinical Evidence and Translational Challenges.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a complex cerebrovascular disease with multifactorial etiology and pathological mechanisms, characterized by high morbidity, disability, and mortality rates. Although mechanical thrombectomy, intravenous thrombolysis, and neuroprotective interventions have improved acute management, effective brain-targeted delivery remains limited by the blood-brain barrier, short therapeutic windows, heterogeneous ischemic lesions, and secondary injury after reperfusion. Biomimetic nanomedicines have emerged as promising platforms for IS therapy because they can inherit biological fun

Hybrid Nanogenerator Inspired by Biomimetic Structure of Bird Fluttering Wings.

To efficiently collect mechanical energy from the marine environment and reliably provide clean energy for low-power marine equipment is the main aim of this study. In this study, a triboelectric-piezoelectric hybrid generator with a flapping wing structure was designed, inspired by the flapping wing movement of birds. Piezoelectric thin films serve as elastic supports for vertical contact-separation-mode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) and can provide an external energy output. And this structure is coupled with a cantilever beam piezoelectric energy harvester as a concentrated mass, achi

Biomimetic and Nonbiomimetic Approaches in Dura Substitutes: The Influence of Mechanical Properties.

The dura mater, the furthest and strongest layer of the meninges, is crucial for protecting the brain and spinal cord. Its biomechanical behavior is vital, as any alterations can compromise biological functions. In recent decades, interest in the dura mater has increased due to the need for hermetic closure of dural defects prompting the development of several substitutes. Collagen-based dural substitutes are common commercial options, but they lack the complex biological and structural elements of the native dura mater, impacting regeneration and potentially causing complications like wound/p

In Situ Self-Inflating-Modeled Giant-Vesicle-Like Quantum Dot Assembly for Biomimetic Artificial Photosynthesis.

The study of biomimetic self-assembly is crucial for scientists aiming to understand the origin of life and construct biomimetic functional structures. In our endeavor to create a biomimetic photosynthetic assembly, we discover a self-inflation behavior that drives the components, MPA-CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and a solid cationic polyelectrolyte, CPPA, to form a giant-vesicle-like (GVL) architecture, termed GVL-QDs@CPPA. The in situ generation of osmotic pressure during the self-assembly of QDs onto swollen CPPA in water was found to cause this self-inflation process. The resulting vesicle-like

A biomimicking design for mechanical knee joints.

In this paper we present a new bioinspired bicondylar knee joint that requires a smaller actuator size when compared to a constant moment arm joint. Unlike existing prosthetic joints, the proposed mechanism replicates the elastic, rolling and sliding elements of the human knee. As a result, the moment arm that the actuators can impart on the joint changes as function of the angle, producing the equivalent of a variable transmission. By employing a similar moment arm-angle profile as the human knee the peak actuator force for stair ascent can be reduced by 12% compared to a constant moment arm

Recent advances in hybrid membrane vesicles as a programmable biomimetic drug delivery.

Biomimetic nanomedicine utilizing cell membrane cloaking has emerged as a promising approach to enhance nanocarrier performance by integrating the physicochemical benefits of synthetic nanoparticles with the biological functionalities of source cells. Nonetheless, single-source membrane systems are inherently limited by their restricted functionality, which constrains their capacity to address the complex pathological barriers present in various diseases. To address these limitations, hybrid membrane vesicles (HMVs) have been developed. These vesicles are formed by the fusion of two or more di

Biomimetic engineering of a fortified ice composite with enhanced mechanical properties.

This work presents BioPykrete, a high-performance sustainable bio-composite engineered from ice, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and a custom chimeric protein designed to facilitate interfacial adhesion. By genetically fusing the ice-binding protein AFPIII with the carbohydrate-binding module CBM3a, we developed a chimeric protein to act as a molecular "bioadhesive" bridging the crystalline reinforcement phase to the ice matrix. During the controlled solidification of the suspension, the CBM3a-AFPIII chimera is proposed to regulate the self-organisation of the CNC fibers into a reinforcing 3D ne

Interfacial chemistry governs nanoparticle self-sorting during biomimetic crystallization.

Biominerals comprise composite crystals in which organic constituents are spatially organized within mineral matrices with exquisite precision, giving rise to hierarchically ordered architectures. Despite extensive efforts, achieving precise control over organic-inorganic interactions to construct biomimetic composite materials with programmable composition and spatial organization remains a major challenge. Here we show that diblock copolymer nanoparticles with distinct compositions and dimensions-resembling pseudo-proteins-undergo spontaneous self-sorting during occlusion within growing calc
