Yeast biomimetic iron‑titanium oxides for electrochemical biosensing.

A yeast cell template technology is described to biomimetically synthesize FeTi oxides. The resulting samples, yeast Fe2O3 and yeast Fe2O3/TiO2, are then employed as active materials for the electrochemical detection of cancer-associated miRNAs. For the perfect matched cancer miR-141, electrochemical analysis shows a main oxidation peak at about +0.4 V, along with a reduction peak at about +0.30 V. For the detection of cancer miR-29c, the introduction of the Ti element is found to stabilize the structure of the resulting materials. These results suggest a potential of the biomimetic FeTi oxide

Isotropically Robust Hydrogel with Biomimetic Multilayer Fibrous Architecture.

Soft materials like hydrogels hold great promise for biomedical and engineering applications. While various strengthening and toughening methods have been developed, they often produce anisotropic structures or require specific liquid conditions to maintain enhanced mechanical properties. Inspired by the hierarchical collagen architecture of articular cartilage, we report here a biomimetic multilayer fibrous hydrogel that overcomes these limitations. Through controlled stacking of aligned fibrous monolayers, we create a hierarchical structure exhibiting exceptional isotropic mechanical propert

3D biomimetic niche modulates embryo development in vitro.

Embryo development undergoes critical morphological transformations post-implantation, largely driven by the complex and dynamic microenvironment of the uterus. Despite advances, current 3D culture models inadequately recapitulate the uterine environment necessary for studying embryo-uterus interactions. In this work, we engineer a hydrogel inspired by the properties of the decidua, incorporating Matrigel to support blastocyst implantation and embryo development in vitro. Our findings reveal that embryos cultured within this hydrogel system successfully progress to an early organogenesis-like

A Biomimetic Li2Si2O5 Composite with High Energy Absorption for Endocrowns.

Endocrowns represent a minimally invasive treatment option for endodontically treated teeth. However, in the anterior dentition, they are more likely to cause fractures in the abutment teeth due to the influence of lateral forces. Developing endocrowns that closely replicate the mechanical properties of the different components of natural teeth offers a promising strategy for improving the biomechanical performance of single-component restorations. Therefore, this study reports a novel multilevel ceramic composite achieved through fabrication of a diamond-topology lithium disilicate (LD) ceram

Towards biomimetic evolution of artificial intervertebral disc: a review.

In lumbar total disc replacement, artificial disc implants are utilized to cure degenerative disc disease and restore natural motion. Human intervertebral discs (IVD) are part of the spine and contribute to delivering six degrees of freedom, elastic deformation, and shock absorption and act differently under different load conditions. Despite advancements in spinal fixation systems and IVD replacement techniques, achieving long-term segmental stability while preserving physiological motion remains a significant challenge. To overcome this issue, the proposed work aims to identify the biomechan

Uptake of Biomimetic Nanovesicles by Granuloma for Photodynamic Therapy of Tuberculosis.

The antimicrobial resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) is a challenge in the antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis (TB). Herein, we aimed to examine a photodynamic therapy for TB that has a low risk of drug resistance and involves biomimetic macrophage membranes combined with a photosensitizer, chlorin e6 (Ce6; hereinafter, C-MV). We used Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum), a waterborne pathogen closely related to M. tuberculosis, which causes TB-like infections in ectotherms but not in humans. The mouse tail granuloma model induced by M. marinum is a relatively mature TB

Air-Mediated Biomimetic Synthesis of Polyhydroxyalkanoate with C4 Diol.

Poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) is a high-performance, well-recyclable, and biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). However, conventional bioproduction of homopolymeric P4HB involves complex and costly processes with C4 feedstocks, particularly 1,4-butanediol (BDO), and enzyme-coenzyme systems in genetically engineered bacteria. An alternative extracellular chemical route utilizing aerial oxidation of BDO offers cost and energy benefits but struggle with conversion efficiency. Inspired by efficient intracellular oxidation of primary alcohols, we propose a ruthenium-phosphine synergistic catal

Membrane-acting biomimetic peptoids against visceral leishmaniasis.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is among the most neglected tropical diseases in the world. Drug cell permeability is essential for killing the intracellular residing parasites responsible for VL, making cell-permeating peptides a logical choice to address VL. Unfortunately, the limited biological stability of peptides restricts their usage. Sequence-specific oligo-N-substituted glycines ('peptoids') are a class of peptide mimics that offers an excellent alternative to peptides in terms of ease of synthesis and good biostability. We tested peptoids against the parasite Leishmania donovani in both

Biomimetic Nanomaterials for the Immunomodulation of the Cardiosplenic Axis Postmyocardial Infarction.

The spleen is an important mediator of both adaptive and innate immunity. As such, attempts to modulate the immune response provided by the spleen may be conducive to improved outcomes for numerous diseases throughout the body. Here, biomimicry is used to rationally design nanomaterials capable of splenic retention and immunomodulation for the treatment of disease in a distant organ, the postinfarct heart. Engineered senescent erythrocyte-derived nanotheranostic (eSENTs) are generated, demonstrating significant uptake by the immune cells of the spleen including T and B cells, as well as monocy

Iron-Catalyzed Biomimetic Dimerization of Tryptophan-Containing Peptides.

Biomimetic oxidative dimerization of tryptophan derivatives in aqueous media with oxygen as a bulk oxidant catalyzed by an iron octacarboxy phthalocyanine complex was established. The discovery of the extremely active iron catalyst enables aerobic enzyme-mimetic oxidation to be performed in a flask. This method was applicable to the oxidative dimerization of a wide range of tryptophan derivatives, including various dipeptides and oligopeptides, with remarkable functional-group tolerance without the protection of the amino acid residues. Furthermore, oxidative dimerization of tryptophan derivat

Light-Driven Biomimetic Nanomotors for Enhanced Photothermal Therapy.

Nanotechnology-based strategy has recently drawn extensive attention for the therapy of malignant tumors due to its distinct strengths in cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, the limited intratumoral permeability of nanoparticles is a major hurdle to achieving the desired effect of cancer treatment. Due to their superior cargo towing and reliable penetrating property, micro-/nanomotors (MNMs) are considered as one of the most potential candidates for the coming generation of drug delivery platforms. Here, near-infrared (NIR)-actuated biomimetic nanomotors (4T1-JPGSs-IND) are fabricated suc

Biomimetic Tympanic Membrane Replacement Made by Melt Electrowriting.

The tympanic membrane (TM) transfers sound waves from the air into mechanical motion for the ossicular chain. This requires a high sensitivity to small dynamic pressure changes and resistance to large quasi-static pressure differences. The TM achieves this by providing a layered structure of about 100µm in thickness, a low flexural stiffness, and a high tensile strength. Chronically infected middle ears require reconstruction of a large area of the TM. However, current clinical treatment can cause a reduction in hearing. With the novel additive manufacturing technique of melt electrowriting (M
