Measurement of some selected enzymatic activities in infected Biomphalaria alexandrina snails.

The activities of aspartate (AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferases and that of lactate dehydrogenase (LD) were measured in the homogenate of infected Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, the specific intermediate hosts for the parasite Schistosoma mansoni which is the cause of the disease schistosomiasis. The isoenzymatic pattern of LD was also studied in the infected snails tissue.

Molluscicidal activities of curcumin-nisin polylactic acid nanoparticle on Biomphalaria pfeifferi.

BACKGROUND: Snail intermediate host control is a widely canvassed strategy for schistosomiasis control in endemic countries. While there have been increasing studies on the search for potent molluscicides in the past years, the use of nanoparticulate agents as molluscicides is yet to gain wide attention. The aim of this study was to assess the molluscicidal potential of curcumin-nisin poly lactic acid (PLA) entrapped nanoparticle (CurNisNp) against Biomphalaria pfeifferi, a snail intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: CurNisNp formulated by double emulsion

Schistosomiasis control using piplartine against Biomphalaria glabrata at different developmental stages.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the most significant diseases in tropical countries and affects almost 200 million people worldwide. The application of molluscicides to eliminate the parasite's intermediate host, Biomphalaria glabrata, from infected water supplies is one strategy currently being used to control the disease. Previous studies have shown a potent molluscicidal activity of crude extracts from Piper species, with extracts from Piper tuberculatum being among the most active. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The molluscicidal activity of P. tuberculatum was monitored on methanolic extrac

Biomphalaria glabrata as a possible experimental model for investigating anti-inflammatory substances.

This study aims to identify and analyze published studies in which anti-inflammatory or immunoregulatory compounds have been investigated and their effects evaluated using Biomphalaria glabrata as an experimental model. B. glabrata, a mollusk highly susceptible to Schistosoma mansoni, is increasingly being considered a promising model for studying inflammatory processes and screening potential therapeutic agents. Inflammation, although a natural component of the immune response, can become chronic and contribute to the development of various diseases. In this mollusk, hemocytes act as key immu

Localization of Cholecystokinin/Sulfakinin Neuropeptides in Biomphalaria glabrata, an Intermediate Host for Schistosomiasis.

Snails belonging to the genus Biomphalaria serve as obligatory intermediate hosts for the trematode Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent for the most widespread form of schistosomiasis. The simpler nervous systems of gastropod molluscs, such as Biomphalaria, provide advantageous models for investigating neural responses to infection at the cellular and network levels. The present study examined neuropeptides related to cholecystokinin (CCK), a major multifunctional regulator of central nervous system (CNS) function in mammals. A neural transcriptome generated from the CNS of Biomphalaria a

ARGONAUTE2 Localizes to Sites of Sporocysts in the Schistosome-Infected Snail, Biomphalaria glabrata.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small regulatory RNA that are generated via core protein machinery. The miRNAs direct gene-silencing mechanisms to mediate an essential role in gene expression regulation. In mollusks, miRNAs have been demonstrated to be required to regulate gene expression in various biological processes, including normal development, immune responses, reproduction, and stress adaptation. In this study, we aimed to establishment the requirement of the miRNA pathway as part of the molecular response of exposure of Biomphalaria glabrata (snail host) to Schistosoma mansoni (trem

Inhibition of alternative oxidase disrupts the development and oviposition of Biomphalaria glabrata snails.

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria glabrata is one of the main intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, the most widespread species of Schistosoma. Our previous studies proved that alternative oxidase (AOX), the terminal oxidase in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, widely exists in several species of intermediate host snails of Schistosoma. Meanwhile, inhibition of AOX activity in Oncomelania hupensis snails could dramatically enhance the molluscicidal effect of niclosamide. As a hermaphroditic aquatic mollusc, the high fecundity and population density of B. glabrata increase the difficulty of snai

Genome of the ramshorn snail Biomphalaria straminea-an obligate intermediate host of schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, or bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Infection by Schistosoma mansoni in humans results when cercariae emerge into water from freshwater snails in the genus Biomphalaria and seek out and penetrate human skin. The snail Biomphalaria straminea is native to South America and is now also present in Central America and China, and represents a potential vector host for spreading schistosomiasis. To date, genomic information for the genus is restricted to the neotropical species Biomphalaria glabrata. This limits und

Proteomic, metabolic and immunological changes in Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Mansonic schistosomiasis is a neglected disease transmitted by Biomphalaria spp. snails. Understanding what happens inside the intermediate host is important to develop more efficient ways of reducing schistosomiasis prevalence. Our purpose was to characterize metabolic and immunological changes in Biomphalaria glabrata 24 h after exposure to Schistosoma mansoni. For this purpose, proteins were extracted from snails' whole tissue with Tris-Urea buffer and digested with tripsin. Mass spectrometry was performed and analyzed with MaxQuant and Perseus software. Also, the hemolymph of five snails 2

Mapping the potential distribution of the schistosomiasis intermediate host Biomphalaria straminea in China.

Biomphalaria straminea is native to Brazil but has established a population in Guangdong Province, China. Its potential of expanding and transmitting Schistosoma mansoni is of great concern. We seek to map S. mansoni transmission potential by predicting ecological dimensions and potential distributions of B. straminea using state-of-the-art ecological niche model approaches. Two environmental datasets were selected to fit individual and ensemble niche models, together with the evaluation of niche conservatism during B. straminea invasion in China. A small area is still occupied by the introduc

A novel bacterial pathogen of Biomphalaria glabrata: a potential weapon for schistosomiasis control?

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is the second-most widespread tropical parasitic disease after malaria. Various research strategies and treatment programs for achieving the objective of eradicating schistosomiasis within a decade have been recommended and supported by the World Health Organization. One of these approaches is based on the control of snail vectors in endemic areas. Previous field studies have shown that competitor or predator introduction can reduce snail numbers, but no systematic investigation has ever been conducted to identify snail microbial pathogens and evaluate their mollusc

Localization of serotonin in the nervous system of Biomphalaria glabrata, an intermediate host for schistosomiasis.

The digenetic trematode Schistosoma mansoni that causes the form of schistosomiasis found in the Western Hemisphere requires the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as its primary intermediate host. It has been proposed that the transition from the free-living S. mansoni miracidium to parasitic mother sporocyst depends on uptake of biogenic amines, e.g. serotonin, from the snail host. However, little is known about potential sources of serotonin in B. glabrata tissues. This investigation examined the localization of serotonin-like immunoreactivity (5HTli) in the central nervous system (CNS)

The effects of temperature change on the infection rate of Biomphalaria glabrata with Schistosoma mansoni.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of temperature on the development of Schistosoma mansoni infections in Biomphalaria glabrata. The snails were infected at 15, 20, and 30 degrees C, and the cercarial release was analyzed after 30 and 60 days post-infection. Our results showed that a decrease in the temperature has a substantial influence on the development of S. mansoni infection in B. glabrata, with significant differences (p < 0.05) between 15 and 30 degrees C. These data could provide a better understanding of the epidemiological aspects of schistosomiasis.

Anesthesia of Biomphalaria spp. (Mollusca, Gastropoda): sodium pentobarbital is the drug of choice.

The anesthetic effect of some water-soluble anesthesic or narcotic drugs currently used in mice was tested in molluscs of the Biomphalaria genus. Sodium thiopental was very toxic to the snails resulting in high rates of mortality in all the treatment schedules tested. Cetamine base, at concentration of 0.25 mg/ml of water, resulted in partial snail anesthesia (40% of snails were anesthetized) only after 20 h of exposition. The association of Cetamine base with Tiazine chloridrate did not improve the anesthesic effect, and higher concentrations of these drugs were toxic to the snails. Sodium pe

Metabolic and behavioral effects of PHMB on Biomphalaria glabrata: a strategy for schistosomiasis control.

The snail Biomphalaria glabrata is an important transmitter of Schistosoma mansoni, the parasite that causes schistosomiasis. One of the strategies for controlling the disease involves interrupting the transmission cycle of the parasite by managing the host snail population. In a previous study, the sanitizer polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) caused mortality in B. glabrata starting at 1.6 mg L-1. The present study evaluated the activity of PHMB at concentrations of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mg L-1 through behavioral changes and biochemical biomarkers. The snails were evaluated every 24
