An Antibacterial Bionic Periosteum with Angiogenesis-Neurogenesis Coupling Effect for Bone Regeneration.

The periosteum, rich in neurovascular networks, bone progenitor cells, and stem cells, is vital for bone repair. Current artificial periosteal materials face challenges in mechanical strength, bacterial infection, and promoting osteogenic differentiation and angiogenesis. To address these issues, we adjusted the electrospinning ratio of poly-ε-caprolactone and chitosan and incorporated Zn doping whitlockite with polydopamine coating into a nanofiber membrane. After a series of characterizations, optimal results were achieved with a poly-ε-caprolactone: chitosan ratio of 8:1 and 5% nanoparticle

Reduced interhemispheric connectivity in traumatic brachial plexopathies after bionic reconstruction.

Traumatic brachial plexus lesions (TBPL) can lead to permanent impairment of hand function despite timely brachial plexus surgical treatment. In selected cases with no recovery of hand function, the affected forearm can be amputated and replaced by a bionic hand to regain prehensile function. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess (sub)cortical motor activity and functional connectivity changes after TBPL and bionic reconstruction. Cortical activity was measured with functional MRI (fMRI) during execution, and imagery of hand closing movements with the affected and healthy arm and single s

Design and Analysis of a Novel Bionic Tensegrity Robotic Fish with a Continuum Body.

Biological fish exhibit remarkable adaptability and exceptional swimming performance through their powerful and flexible bodies. Therefore, designing a continuum flexible body is significantly important for the development of a robotic fish. However, it is still challenging to replicate these functions of a biological body due to the limitations of actuation and material. In this paper, based on a tensegrity structure, we propose a bionic design scheme for a continuum robotic fish body with a property of stiffness variation. Its detailed structures and actuation principles are also presented.

[Bionic optic nerve based on perovskite (CsPbBr 3) quantum-dots].

The bionic optic nerve can mimic human visual physiology and is a future treatment for visual disorders. Photosynaptic devices could respond to light stimuli and mimic normal optic nerve function. By modifying (Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythio-phene):poly (styrenesulfonate)) active layers with all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots, with an aqueous solution as the dielectric layer in this paper, we developed a photosynaptic device based on an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). The optical switching response time of OECT was 3.7 s. To improve the optical response of the device, a 365 nm, 300 m

3D printed bionic ear and microtia-anotia: Medical and forensic implications.

Advances in science and technology result in continuous upgrading of the medical and clinical fields. These upgrades have been beneficial to many patients suffering from congenital and developmental diseases causing compromised functionality as well as the structural integrity of the affected organs. One such congenital anomaly is the microtia-anotia spectrum, which results in deformities of the external ear, affecting the hearing capability of an individual. The collaboration and integration of electronics in human biology are exemplified by the development of a 3D printed cyborg bionic ear f

Performance Optimization for Bionic Robotic Dolphin with Active Variable Stiffness Control.

Aquatic animals such as fish and cetaceans can actively modulate their body stiffness with muscle to achieve excellent swimming performance under different situations. However, it is still challenging for a robotic swimmer with bionic propulsion mode to dynamically adjust its body stiffness to improve the swimming speed due to the difficulties in designing an effective stiffness adjustment structure. In this paper, based on the special torque mode of a motor, we propose an active variable stiffness control method for a robotic dolphin to pursue better swimming speed. Different from a variable

Bionic reconstruction : Restoration of extremity function with osseointegrated and mind-controlled prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Loss of an extremity at any level has a major impact on a patient's life. Using bionic reconstruction, extremity function can be restored and the patient reintegrated into daily life. Surgical procedures including selective nerve transfer and anchoring of prostheses into bone are combined with structured rehabilitation and modern prosthetic fitting. The patient is thereby able to use the prostheses intuitively and with multiple degrees of freedom. METHODS: This article presents the concept and approach for modern bionic reconstruction in detail and the relevant literature. The ner

Bionic epidural stimulation restores arterial pressure regulation during orthostasis.

Peptide toxins have been valuable probes in efforts to identify amino acid residues that line the permeation pathway of cation-selective channels. However, no peptide toxins have been identified that interact with known anion-selective channels such as the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). CFTR channels are expressed in epithelial cells and are associated with several genetic disorders, including cystic fibrosis and polycystic kidney disease. Several organic inhibitors have been used to investigate the structure of the Cl- permeation pathway in CFTR. However, investig

Bionic technology revitalizes native baroreflex function in rats with baroreflex failure.

BACKGROUND: We developed a bionic technology for the treatment of baroreflex failure and tested its efficacy in restoration of arterial pressure against head-up tilt (HUT) in rats with baroreflex failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: The bionic baroreflex system (BBS) was a negative feedback system controlled by a computer, the artificial vasomotor center. It sensed systemic arterial pressure (SAP) through a micromanometer placed in the aortic arch and automatically computed the frequency of a pulse train to stimulate sympathetic efferent nerves. We selected the celiac ganglion as the sympathetic vas

Immunomodulatory cytoskeleton of bionic periosteum affects mitochondrial dynamics to promote osteogenesis.

PURPOSE: Periosteum is a key regulatory hub in the immune microenvironment of bone repair and the mitochondrial dynamics of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) directly determine the osteogenic efficiency; therefore, how to promote bone healing through the immunomodulation of mitochondrial dynamics is a key challenge. METHODS: Inspired by the natural periosteum, we designed a bionic periosteum that integrates topology and controlled Semaphorin 3 A (Sema3A) release. Hyaluronic acid-coated Sema3A granular microsols spontaneously formed a nucleus-sheath structure under a high-voltage elec

Rapid quality evaluation of MXQLM based on bionic sensory and mathematical separation.

Maxing Qinlong Mixture (MXQLM) is a widely used hospital formulation for treating chronic bronchitis (CB). Current quality standards rely only on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) for qualitative identification, which cannot rapidly or accurately monitor the preparation's core active ingredients. To address this gap, we developed a fast, accurate quality-control workflow for MXQLM. We performed chemical separation and component analysis of 127 batches of MXQLM using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Network pharmacology identified five potential active compounds, including baicale

Theoretical Design of Smart Bionic Skins with Self-Adaptive Temperature Regulation.

Thermal management presents a significant challenge in electric design, particularly in densely packed electronic systems. This study proposes a theoretical model for radiative bionic skin that emulates human skin, enabling the self-adaptive modulation of the thermal exhaustion rate to maintain homeostasis for objects covered by the skin in fluctuating thermal environments. The proposed artificial skin consists of phase change material (VO2) nanoparticles embedded in a low-loss matrix situated on a metallic substrate with a minimal thickness of several micrometers. The findings from our theore

Bionic for Training: Smart Framework Design for Multisensor Mechatronic Platform Validation.

Home monitoring supports the continuous improvement of the therapy by sharing data with healthcare professionals. It is required when life-threatening events can still occur after hospital discharge such as neonatal apnea. However, multiple sources of external noise could affect data quality and/or increase the misdetection rate. In this study, we developed a mechatronic platform for sensor characterizations and a framework to manage data in the context of neonatal apnea. The platform can simulate the movement of the abdomen in different plausible newborn positions by merging data acquired sim
