The Connections Between Alexithymia, Childhood Maltreatment, Impulsivity and Extreme Sensory Processing Patterns in Relation to Bipolar Symptoms in Inpatients With Bipolar Disorder.

Childhood maltreatment, alexithymia and impulsivity are related to bipolar disorder (BD), but the role of potential underlying mechanisms of this link, such as extreme sensory processing, in BD are unclear. This study compared sensory processing patterns between individuals with BD-I or BD-II and between those with and without alexithymia and childhood maltreatment. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the role of extreme sensory processing in the relationship between childhood trauma, alexithymia and impulsivity with both depression and mania in a sample of hospitalized individuals with B

Lithium therapy and delayed progression of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in patients with bipolar disorder and mild neurocognitive disorders.

Recent mechanistic evidence identifies lithium deficiency as a driver of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) pathogenesis. To evaluate this hypothesis in a population-based setting, we emulated a target trial comparing ADRD progression after initiation of lithium versus antiepileptic mood stabilizers among adults ≥55 years with bipolar disorder and mild neurocognitive disorder, using US Medicare claims with replication in two commercial databases. Lithium initiation was associated with a lower 5-year risk of progression to advanced ADRD (risk ratio 0.87; 95% CI 0.78-0.99) and long

Reduction of dopamine-related transcription factors Nurr1 and NGFI-B in the prefrontal cortex in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

Abnormal cortical and subcortical dopaminergic activities are among the most consistent neuropathological findings in schizophrenia. The molecular mechanisms remain unspecified. NGFI-B and Nurr1 are two closely related transcription factors involved in dopaminergic cell differentiation, maturation, and apoptosis. NGFI-B knockout mice show attenuated behavioral response to dopamine receptor agonists, whereas Nurr1 knockout disrupts midbrain dopaminergic neuron development. To further understand the role of Nurr1 and NGFI-B in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders, we measured Nurr1 and NGFI-B mRN

Language, Motor Ability and Related Deficits in Children at Familial Risk of Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is known that impairments in linguistic ability and motor function tend to co-occur in children, and that children from families with parental mental illness such as schizophrenia tend to perform poorly in both domains, but the exact nature of these links has not yet been fully elucidated. DESIGN: In this study, we leveraged the first wave of the Danish High Risk and Resilience Study (VIA 7), which includes both genetic data and measures covering multiple developmental domains. The VIA 7 cohort comprises 522 7-year-old children born to parents with schizophrenia (N = 202), bipo

Mania-related effects on structural brain changes in bipolar disorder - a narrative review of the evidence.

Cross-sectional neuroimaging studies show that bipolar disorder is associated with structural brain abnormalities, predominantly observed in prefrontal and temporal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and subcortical regions. However, longitudinal studies are needed to elucidate whether these abnormalities presage disease onset or are consequences of disease processes, and to identify potential contributing factors. Here, we narratively review and summarize longitudinal structural magnetic resonance imaging studies that relate imaging outcomes to manic episodes. First, we conclude that longitudinal brain

The relations between executive functions and occupational functioning in individuals with bipolar disorder: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder experience impairments in their occupational functioning, despite remission of symptoms. Previous research has shown that neurocognitive deficits, especially deficits in executive functions, may persist during euthymia and are associated with diminished occupational functioning. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to identify published studies that report on the relationships between executive functions and occupational functioning in BD to review current knowledge and identify knowledge gaps. In addition to traditional neuropsychological

Changes of immune-related factors in the blood of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients receiving monotherapy.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are associated with abnormal expression of immune-related factors (IRFs), which have been proposed as biomarkers of either disease diagnosis (trait markers) or treatment (state markers). However, the state markers have been found to be less reproducible than the trait markers in previous studies. In the current study, we focused on the changes of IRFs in blood of SCZ and BPD patients receiving monotherapy. SCZ (N = 49) and BPD (N = 49) Chinese patients were recruited at acute episode and followed for 9 to 51 days until remission. Blood samples wer

The Relationship Between Food Craving, Appetite-Related Hormones and Clinical Parameters in Bipolar Disorder.

Obesity and weight gain in bipolar disorder (BD) have multifactorial underlying causes such as medication side effects, atypical depressive symptomatology, genetic variants, and disturbances in the neuro-endocrinal system. Therefore, we aim to explore the associations between food craving (FC), clinical parameters, psychotropic medication, and appetite-related hormones. In this cross-sectional investigation, 139 individuals with BD and 93 healthy controls (HC) completed the food craving inventory (FCI). In addition, blood samples (including leptin and acylated ghrelin) were analyzed and sociod

Blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction in patients with bipolar disorder in relation to antipsychotic treatment.

Blood-cerebrospinal barrier (BCB) dysfunction has previously been shown in subjects with schizophrenia and depressed patients with attempted suicide. Bipolar disorder (BPD) shares clinical features with both these disorders, but it is unknown if the integrity of the BCB is altered also in BPD. To assess if BCB function in BPD we surveyed 134 mood-stabilized BPD patients and 86 healthy controls. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected and analyzed for albumin concentration by immunonephelometry. CSF/serum albumin ratio, an established measure of BCB function, was significantl

Patterns of tobacco-related mortality among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression.

Even though individuals with psychiatric conditions have a prevalence of smoking approximately 2-4 times greater than the general population, surprisingly little evidence exists to inform an assessment of the full range of tobacco-related mortality in such populations. The current study aims to provide mortality estimates for conditions causally related to tobacco use among individuals hospitalized with a primary psychiatric diagnosis in California from 1990 to 2005. Restricting cases to those of individuals aged 35 or older at the mid-point of their follow-up period, we assembled cohorts of i

Family-based association study of lithium-related and other candidate genes in bipolar disorder.

CONTEXT: Association studies in bipolar disorder have been focused on a relatively narrow pool of candidate genes based on a limited understanding of the underlying pathophysiologic features. Recent developments suggest that a broader pool of genes may be associated with this disorder. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between genes related to the lithium mechanism of action, as well as other positional and functional candidates, with bipolar I disorder. DESIGN: We examined a dense set of haplotype-tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms using a gene-based test of association. PARTICIPA

Mood changes related to antidepressants: a longitudinal study of patients with bipolar disorder in a naturalistic setting.

This prospective, longitudinal study investigated the frequency and pattern of mood changes between outpatients receiving usual care for bipolar disorder who were either taking or not taking antidepressants. Eighty patients with bipolar disorder self-reported mood and psychiatric medications daily for 3 months using a computerized system (ChronoRecord) and returned 8662 days of data. Of the total group of 80 patients, 47 took antidepressants; 33 did not. Patients taking antidepressants reported depression twice as frequently (29% of days vs. 13.8% of days). In both groups, two-thirds of all mo

Comorbid alcohol dependence disorder may be related to aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) and alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) in bipolar II disorder, but only to ALDH2 in bipolar I disorder, in Han Chinese.

OBJECTIVES: A high prevalence rate of bipolar disorder (BP) comorbid with alcohol dependence (AD) (BP+AD) in Western patients with BP has been reported, but whether this is true for Han Chinese with BP is uncertain. We explored the prevalence of BP+AD in a Han Chinese population with BP, and investigated the effect of alcohol-metabolizing genotypes on bipolar I disorder (BP-I) + AD and bipolar II disorder (BP-II) + AD. METHODS: Healthy controls (HCs) (n = 672) and 18- to 65-year-old patients with BP (BP-I: n = 530; BP-II: n = 788) were recruited. Patients with any other major or minor mental

Acute anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are related to different patterns of nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopamine dysfunction.

Dopamine (DA) receptor and transporter dysfunctions play a major role in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric diseases including anxiety disorder (AD), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) in the manic (BDman) or depressive (BDdep) state and schizophrenia (SZ). We performed a PUBMED search, which provided a total of 239 in vivo imaging studies with either positron emission tomography (PET) or single-proton emission computed tomography (SPECT). In these studies, DA transporter binding, D1 receptor (R) binding, D2R binding, DA synthesis and/or DA release in patients with the

Risks for the transition from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: It is currently not possible to determine which individuals with unipolar depression are at highest risk for a manic episode. This study investigates clinical and psychosocial risk factors for mania among individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), indicating diagnostic conversion from MDD to bipolar I disorder. METHOD: We fitted logistic regression models to predict the first onset of a manic episode among 6,214 cases of lifetime MDD according to DSM-IV criteria in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. Participants in this survey were interview

Association Between Lithium Use and Suicide-Related Behaviors in Bipolar Disorder: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Lithium has long been associated with reduced suicide risk in bipolar disorder; however, evidence from real-world clinical populations remains susceptible to confounding, and the behavioral correlates related to this association are not well characterized. METHODS: In this multicenter cross-sectional study, 616 individuals aged 12-45 years with bipolar disorder were recruited from 14 psychiatric centers, of whom 585 had complete data for the present analyses. Lithium exposure within the past year was determined from clinical records. The primary outcome was a composite of suicide-

Neurostructural Correlates of Polygenic Risk for Coronary Artery Disease in Relation to Youth Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD), characterized by anomalous neurostructural phenotypes, is also strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. Here we examined polygenic risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) in relation to gray matter structure in youth BD. METHODS: Youth participants (mean age 17.1 years; n = 66 BD, n = 45 healthy controls [HC]) underwent T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. CAD polygenic risk scores (CAD-PRS) were calculated using independent, adult genome-wide summary statistics. Covariate-adjusted vertex-wise analyses examined the association of CAD-PRS with cor

Neurotransmission-related gene expression in the frontal pole is altered in subjects with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The frontal pole (Brodmann area 10, BA10) is the largest cytoarchitectonic region of the human cortex, performing complex integrative functions. BA10 undergoes intensive adolescent grey matter pruning prior to the age of onset for bipolar disorder (BP) and schizophrenia (SCHIZ), and its dysfunction is likely to underly aspects of their shared symptomology. In this study, we investigated the role of BA10 neurotransmission-related gene expression in BP and SCHIZ. We performed qPCR to measure the expression of 115 neurotransmission-related targets in control, BP, and SCHIZ postmortem samples (n =

Age-related deficits in intracortical myelination in young adults with bipolar disorder type I.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have implicated white-matter-related changes in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. However, most of what is known is derived from in vivo subcortical white-matter imaging or postmortem studies. In this study, we investigated whole-brain intracortical myelin (ICM) content in people with bipolar disorder type I and controls. METHODS: Between Sept. 1, 2014, and Jan. 31, 2017, we used a 3 T General Electric scanner to collect T1-weighted images in 45 people with bipolar disorder type I and 60 controls aged 17 to 45 years using an optimized sequence that was sens
