Digital decision support integrated with diagnostics and precision fungicide application for Southern Corn Leaf Blight in maize.

Southern Corn Leaf Blight (SCLB, also called Maize Leaf Blight, MLB), caused by Bipolaris maydis (teleomorph: Cochliobolus heterostrophus), severely limits maize yield under favourable conditions. Rapid detection and precise interventions are essential for sustainable production. We present an AI-driven framework integrating deep learning diagnostics, precision fungicide application, and a digital decision support system (DSS) for field-level SCLB management. Thirteen machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms were evaluated, with VGG16 achieving the highest performance (accuracy

Complete genome sequence of the first alphahypovirus from the phytopathogenic fungus Curvularia americana on Poa pratensis in China.

In the present study, a novel positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus was identified from Curvularia americana strain 32 - 2, a phytopathogenic fungus infecting Poa pratensis in China, which was designated as "Curvularia americana hypovirus 1" (CaHV1). The complete genome of CaHV1 consists of 14,386 nucleotides (nt) with a single large open reading frame (ORF) (nt position 593 to 14035). The ORF encodes a putative polyprotein (4,480 amino acids) containing two potential conserved domains, which includes a Domain of Unknown Function 3525 (DUF3525) and Helicase. BLASTp analysis showed that amin

Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis (mycotic cyst).

Phaeohyphomycosis designates fungal infections caused by pheoid or melanized fungi and characterized histopathologically by the presence of septate hyphae, pseudohyphae, and yeasts. Etiologic agents include Exophiala, Phoma, Bipolaris, Phialophora, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Alternaria, Exserohilum, and Phialemonium sp. The most common are Exophiala jeanselmei and Wangiella dermatitidis. The clinical presentation depends on the immune status of the host: superficial (tinea nigra and black piedra); cutaneous (scytalidiosis) and corneal; subcutaneous (mycotic cyst); and systemic phaeohyphomycos

Allergic fungal sinusitis presenting with proptosis and diplopia: a review of ophthalmologic complications and treatment.

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a noninvasive, but vigorous, inflammatory response to mold that occurs in immunocompetent patients with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyposis. It typically occurs in patients who have a history of atopic disease. Occasionally, the patients with allergic fungal sinusitis present with ophthalmic signs and symptoms--most commonly proptosis and diplopia. We report the case of a 23-year-old man with right-sided proptosis, diplopia, and nasal obstruction. He had a history of sinusitis in the past. On presentation, sinus computed tomography scan showed pansinusitis. Subse

Emerging and less common fungal pathogens.

Less common and emerging fungal pathogens are often resistant to conventional antifungal therapy and may cause severe morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Some Scedosporium species may be completely resistant to antifungal therapy. Hyaline septated filamentous fungi, such as Fusarium species, Acremonium species, Paecilomyces species, and Trichoderma species, are increasingly reported as causing invasive mycoses refractory to amphotericin B therapy. Dematiaceous septated filamentous fungi, such as Bipolaris species may cause pneumonia, sinusitis, and CNS infections that are unres

The spectrum of allergic fungal diseases of the upper and lower airways.

Fungi cause a wide spectrum of fungal diseases of the upper and lower airways. There are three main phyla involved in allergic fungal disease: (1) Ascomycota (2) Basidiomycota (3) Zygomycota. Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) causes chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms and is caused predominantly by Aspergillus fumigatus in India and Bipolaris in the United States. The recommended treatment approach for AFRS is surgical intervention and systemic steroids. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (APBA) is most commonly diagnosed in patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis. Long term systemic ster

Identification and function of a polyketide synthase gene responsible for 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-melanin pigment biosynthesis in Ascochyta rabiei.

Ascochyta rabiei produces and accumulates one of the well-known fungal polyketides, 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-melanin pigment (DHN-melanin), in asexual and sexual fruiting bodies. Degenerate PCR primers were used to isolate an ArPKS1 of A. rabiei encoding a polypeptide with high similarity to polyketide synthase (PKS) involved in biosynthesis of DHN-melanin in other ascomycetous fungi. Site-directed mutagenesis of ArPKS1 in A. rabiei generated melanin-deficient pycnidial mutants but caused no significant reduction of pathogenicity to chickpea. Pycnidiospores in ArPKS1-mutant pycnidia showed hig

A review of the new antifungals: posaconazole, micafungin, and anidulafungin.

This column reviews 3 new systemic antifungal agents (posaconazole, micafungin, and anidulafungin) from the standpoint of dermatology. Posaconazole, approved to treat invasive Aspergillus and Candida infections, is available in an oral suspension and resembles fluconazole, but seems to have a broader spectrum of activity. Posaconazole is effective against yeasts and molds and could be effective in treating rare fungal infections involving Zygomycetes, Mucor necrotizing fasciitis, rhinocerebral mucormycosis, some Fusarium species, Penicillium, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Paracoccidi

Exploring endophytic bacteria for biocontrol and growth promotion in rice against brown spot and sheath blight diseases.

Rice is one of the world's most critical crops, serving as a staple food for more than half of the global population and playing a vital role in global food security. However, rice production is frequently threatened by diseases such as brown spot and sheath blight, which can significantly reduce yields and impact food availability. Currently, these diseases are often managed using synthetic fertilizers and fungicides, which, while effective, pose serious environmental risks due to their indiscriminate use. The reliance on these chemicals not only harms ecosystems but also contributes to soil

Fungal endophthalmitis associated with compounded products.

Fungal endophthalmitis is a rare but serious infection. In March 2012, several cases of probable and laboratory-confirmed fungal endophthalmitis occurring after invasive ocular procedures were reported nationwide. We identified 47 cases in 9 states: 21 patients had been exposed to the intraocular dye Brilliant Blue G (BBG) during retinal surgery, and the other 26 had received an intravitreal injection containing triamcinolone acetonide. Both drugs were produced by Franck's Compounding Lab (Ocala, FL, USA). Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex mold was identified in specimens from BBG-e

Fungal pneumonias.

Hundreds of fungal species have been associated with pulmonary diseases in humans, but few are consistently found to cause pneumonia. This paper reviews the clinical presentations, geographic prevalence, and epidemiology of, as well as the most recent, yet readily available, diagnostic methods and general therapy for the more common fungal pneumonias. The chapter is divided into categories based on the fungi's physiological and growth characteristics, clinical presentations, and prevalence in the environment. Sections include the geographically restricted dimorphic fungi (e.g., Blastomyces, Co

Fungemia in children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus: new epidemiologic patterns, emerging pathogens, and improved outcome with antifungal therapy.

We characterized 27 episodes of fungemia in 22 children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Fungemia in these patients presented as a community-acquired infection in the setting of outpatient total parenteral nutrition or intravenous antibiotic therapy through a chronically indwelling central venous catheter (CVC). Fungemia developed only in patients with CVCs (P < .001). Non-albicans Candida species, Torulopsis glabrata, Rhodotorula rubra, and Bipolaris spicifera constituted 52% of all causes. Fungemia was detected early, within a median of 2.4 days after the onset of new fe

Two independent dominant resistance genes confer resistance to spot blotch in wheat.

Bipolaris sorokiniana-induced spot blotch constitutes a major wheat disease in warm, humid production regions globally. Elucidating its genetic control is essential for breeding cultivars that mitigate yield and quality losses. We evaluated F2 and F2:3 generations from a WE35 × S2199 cross for resistance phenotypes. Genetic analysis revealed that resistance was controlled by two independent dominant genes: the previously identified Sb3 and a novel resistance gene designated SbWE35. Bulked segregant RNA-Seq (BSR-Seq) analysis using a segregating population from a cross between WE35 and a spot b

The medically important dematiaceous fungi and their identification.

Dematiaceous fungi include a large group of organisms that are darkly pigmented (dark brown, olivaceous, or black). In most cases the pigment is melanin, and specifically, dihydroxynaphthalene melanin. The diseases produced include chromoblastomycosis, eumycotic mycetoma, and phaeohyphomycosis. Phaeohyphomycosis is a new classification for a diverse group of previously known entities grouped together on the basis of finding dematiaceous hyphal and/or yeast-like forms in tissue; tissue involvement may be superficial, cutaneous and corneal, subcutaneous, or systemic.
