Maternal and cord blood manganese (Mn) levels and birth weight: The MIREC birth cohort study.

Epidemiological studies have hypothesized that both insufficient and excess blood manganese (Mn) levels during pregnancy are associated with reduced fetal growth. This literature is characterized by inconsistent results and a limited focus on women with exposures representative of the general North American population. We examined the relationship between maternal and cord blood Mn levels and fetal growth among women enrolled in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals Study (MIREC). Mothers with singleton, term infants and complete maternal first and third trimester blood Mn da

Expansion of disability across successive Mexican birth cohorts: a longitudinal modelling analysis of birth cohorts born 10 years apart.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy (LE) in Mexico has risen rapidly since the 1950s. In high-income contexts, these increases have coincided with a compression of disability to later ages. However, little evidence on trends in disability-free LE (DFLE) exist from Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America. METHODS: Using data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study, we compare changes in LE and DFLE in ages 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79 using birth-cohort-specific multistate lifetable models across successive 10-year birth cohorts. Disability was measured using the Katz activities of daily living (ADL) index, an

Vientiane Multigenerational Birth Cohort Project in Lao People's Democratic Republic: Protocol for Establishing a Longitudinal Multigenerational Birth Cohort to Promote Population Health.

BACKGROUND: Rapid global population growth and urbanization have led to an increase in urban populations in low- and middle-income countries. Although these urban areas have generally better health outcomes than lower-income rural areas, many environmental, social, and health challenges remain. Vientiane, the capital of Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), has approximately 1.5 of the 7.5 million Laotian population (2022) and provides a unique opportunity to examine health outcomes among socioeconomically diverse populations in the rapidly urbanizing context of the country. OBJECTIVE:

Blood Pressure Trajectory From Birth to Preschool and School Age in the ENVIRONAGE Birth Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Blood pressure (BP) is a crucial modifiable risk factor associated with cardiovascular disease in adulthood. The modifiable impact of BP may begin from birth and operate across the whole life span. However, no up-to-date studies have tracked BP from birth onward. OBJECTIVE: To explore BP trajectory in childhood and evaluate whether the risk of hypertension later in childhood is associated with BP at birth and in early childhood. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study evaluated data from the Belgian ENVIRONAGE birth cohort study with longitudinal follow-up visits in

Associations between heat wave during pregnancy and term birth weight outcomes: The PARIS birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Climate change will make extreme weather events more frequent in the 21st century. Extreme ambient temperatures during the prenatal period have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth. It is unclear, however, whether heat waves during pregnancy impact fetal growth in apparently healthy term newborns. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate associations between heat wave during pregnancy and birth weight outcomes in term newborns from the PARIS birth cohort, and to explore meteorological conditions and air pollution as possible intermediate factors. METHO

Preterm Birth and Metal Mixture Exposure among Pregnant Women from the Navajo Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB), defined as birth before 37 wk gestation, is associated with hypertension, diabetes, inadequate prenatal care, unemployment or poverty, and metal exposure. Indigenous individuals are more likely to have maternal risk factors associated with PTB compared with other populations in the United States; however, the role of environmental metals on PTB among pregnant Indigenous women remains uncertain. Previous research identified associations between PTB and individual metals, but there is limited investigation on metal mixtures and this birth outcome. OBJECTIVES: We

Association between maternal acetaminophen use and adverse birth outcomes in a pregnancy and birth cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Acetaminophen is the only analgesic recommended for use during pregnancy. This use has recently been linked to childhood developmental disorders, a finding that requires further investigation. Adverse birth outcomes-preterm birth, low birthweight, and small for gestational age-are associated with increased risk of developmental disorders and can serve as intermediate outcomes when examining the impact of maternal acetaminophen use. METHODS: Clinical and lifestyle-factor data were gathered from 1200 women within the Ontario Birth Study who delivered between January 2013 and June

Paternal involvement and support and risk of preterm birth: findings from the Boston birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate to what extent paternal involvement and support during pregnancy were associated with preterm (PTB) and small-for-gestational age (SGA) births. METHODS: Using data from the Boston Birth Cohort (n = 7047), multiple logistic regression models were performed to estimate the log odds of either PTB or SGA birth, with paternal involvement, paternal social support, and family and friend social support variables as the primary independent variables. RESULTS: About 10% of participating mothers reported their husbands not being involved or supportive during their pregnancies.

Birth anthropometric measures, body mass index and allergic diseases in a birth cohort study (BAMSE).

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess increased birth weight or birth length in relation to allergic diseases at 4 years of age, taking body mass index (BMI) at age 4 as a covariate in the adjustment. METHODS: The parents of a large prospective birth cohort answered questionnaires on environmental factors and allergic symptoms when their children were 2 months and 1, 2 and 4 years old. Perinatal data on weight and length at birth were received from the child care health centres. The children were clinically examined at 4 years of age and height and weight recorded. Blood was drawn for analysis of spe

Exposure to natural environments during pregnancy and birth outcomes in 11 European birth cohorts.

Research suggests that maternal exposure to natural environments (i.e., green and blue spaces) promotes healthy fetal growth. However, the available evidence is heterogeneous across regions, with very few studies on the effects of blue spaces. This study evaluated associations between maternal exposure to natural environments and birth outcomes in 11 birth cohorts across nine European countries. This study, part of the LifeCycle project, was based on a total sample size of 69,683 newborns with harmonised data. For each participant, we calculated seven indicators of residential exposure to natu

Ankyloglossia and Breastfeeding Duration: A Multicenter Birth Cohort Study.

Background and Objective: The prevalence of ankyloglossia and its impact on breastfeeding practices may be overestimated, leading to surgical overtreatment in newborns. The study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of ankyloglossia in the first year of life and investigate the association with exclusive and total breastfeeding duration in different regions of Brazil. Materials and Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study involved the recruitment of mother-infant pairs soon after childbirth in public hospitals in three state capitals in Brazil. Interviews were held with the mothe

Neonatal outcomes after water birth: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare neonatal outcomes between water births, births with immersion only during labour, and births in which immersion was never used. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed including mother-baby dyads attended between 2009 and 2019 at the Hospital do Salnés regional hospital (Pontevedra, Spain). These women were categorised into 3 groups: water birth; immersion only during dilation; and women who never used immersion. Several sociodemographic-obstetric variables were studied and the main outcome was the admission of the neonate to the intensive care unit (NICU). P

Maternal anaemia and preterm birth: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The role of maternal anaemia in preterm birth remains poorly defined, and the association between anaemia and preterm birth clinical subtypes remain unclear. We examined if maternal anaemia exposure both within and across trimesters during gestation is associated with preterm birth. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from a population-based prospective cohort study in 13 counties of East China (1993-96). All singleton live births delivered at 20-44 weeks to women with at least one haemoglobin measure during pregnancy were included (n = 160 700). Risk of preterm birth (

Birth-cohort analysis of peptic ulcer mortality in Europe.

The age- and sex-specific death rates of gastric and duodenal ulcer are followed in eight European countries over a period ranging from 30 to 60 yr. A cohort analysis demonstrates that the temporal changes of peptic ulcer mortality in the European countries seem to occur in a fashion characteristic of those due to changes in birth-cohort risks. Generations born at the end of the 19th century manifested a high risk of dying from gastric and duodenal ulcer. The birth-cohorts with a high risk for duodenal ulcer lagged 10-30 yr behind those with a high risk for gastric ulcer. Male and female cohor

Oral health assessment in a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Robust oral health data collection in birth cohort studies is needed to understand the oral microbiome in relation to oral and general health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to describe the collection of oral health data in toddlers participating in a birth cohort focussing on microbiome development. Hereby, we aim to support the interpretation of variance in microbiome data. METHODS: The Amsterdam Infant Microbiome Study (AIMS, n = ~500) is a longitudinal prospective birth cohort assessing microbiota, general health status, demographics, (oral) health behaviour and dietary

Patterns of Birth Cohort‒Specific Smoking Histories in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking prevalence has decreased considerably in Brazil from 34.8% in 1989 to 12.6% in 2019 owing to the implementation of strong tobacco control policies. However, recent data show that the downward trend may be stagnating. Detailed analyses of historical smoking patterns by birth cohort could guide tobacco control decision making in Brazil. METHODS: Using the 2008 Global Adult Tobacco Survey and the 2013 and 2019 National Health Surveys, historical smoking patterns in Brazil were estimated, supplemented with data from the 2006‒2019 Surveillance System of Risk Factors for Chron

Molecular Study on Twin Cohort with Discordant Birth Weight.

The increased rate of twinning has pointed out newer challenges in clinical practices related to gestational complications, intrauterine growth restriction, perinatal mortality, and comorbidities. As a twin pregnancy progresses, the increased demand for oxygen supply can easily disrupt the redox homeostasis balance and further impose a greater challenge for the developing fetuses. A substantial birth-weight difference acts as an indicator of a deficit in oxygenation or blood flow to one of the fetuses, which might be related to a low bioavailable nitric oxide level. Therefore, in this study, w
