Low birth weight and health expenditures from birth to late adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of low birth weight (LBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW) on health care utilization in childhood and early adolescence. DATA/METHODS: Using Austrian health insurance administrative panel data linked to the Austrian birth register, we estimate the effects of LBW and VLBW in comparison to normal birth weight (NBW) on the number of days spent in the hospital and on expenditures for medical assistance and medical drugs among children and young adults between birth and 21 years of age. To account for the time-invariant heterogeneity of m

Birth weight and birth defects in relation to maternal spermicide use.

The possible effects of maternal spermicide use on birth characteristics of offspring were examined in two studies. First, birth weight of offspring was examined in a cohort study of 302 women who reported using spermicides and 716 women who used no contraceptive methods in the year prior to pregnancy resulting in a 1974 live birth (without a malformation) in Upstate New York. There was no evidence that spermicide use prior to the last menstrual period (LMP) had an effect on mean birth weight or on the proportion of lower weights. Mean birth weight of female births was significantly lower in p

Screening of congenital hypothyroidism in preterm, low birth weight and very low birth weight neonates: A systematic review.

Evidence from different screening programs indicated that the rate of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) was higher in pre-term and low-birth-weight (LBW) newborns than normal ones. Incomplete development of hypothalamic-pituitary axis in this group of neonates results in the delayed rise of TSH and missing cases with CH. Hence, there is a great need for a practicable systematic screening method for proper diagnosis of CH in this group of neonates. In this review, we systematically reviewed papers with the following key words ([Congenital Hypothyroidism AND Screening AND Thyroxine AND Thyroid Stim

Second trimester amniocentesis is not a risk factor for very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight.

Objectives. To assess the risk of very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) attributable to second trimester amniocentesis. Methods. Records of 4,877 consecutive amniocentesis, performed between 1997 and 2003, were analyzed. Only VLBW and ELBW in the study population (exposed) and in the control group (unexposed) were evaluated. Comparisons were made between the amniocentesis group versus nonexposed. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated for VLBW and ELBW classes. Results. In the study population, the VLBW were 35 (0.71%) and the ELBW w

[Non-invasive mandatory ventilation in extremely low birth weight and very low birth weight newborns with failed respiration].

Early extubation of ELBW and VLBW premature infants treated with IMV results in decreased incidence of tracheal and laryngeal injury, lowers the risk of nosocomial infection, decreases the severity and frequency of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Due to prematurity this group of patients is especially susceptible to extubation failure because of apnoe, hypoventilation and atelectasis. In clinical practice attempt was made to provide adequate noninvasive ventilation by the use of nasal intermittent mandatory ventilation in the case of apnoe of prematurity. Advantages of noninvasive nasal IMV

Dose-response relationship between docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake and lower rates of early preterm birth, low birth weight and very low birth weight.

As previously reported, intention-to-treat findings from our phase III randomized clinical trial found that a supplement of 600 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)/day during the last half of pregnancy reduced the incidence of early preterm birth (ePTB, <34 weeks gestation) and very low birth weight (VLBW < 1500 g) offspring. Given the potentially immense clinical significance of these findings, the goal of this secondary analysis was to (1) identify maternal characteristics related with capsule intake (i.e. DHA dose exposure) and (2) determine if DHA dose was associated with low (<2500 g) and very

Maternal body height is a stronger predictor of birth weight than ethnicity: analysis of birth weight percentile charts.

Background Anthropometric parameters such as birth weight (BW) and adult body height vary between ethnic groups. Ethnic-specific percentile charts are currently being used for the assessment of newborns. However, due to globalization and interethnic families, it is unclear which charts should be used. A correlation between a mother's height and her child's BW (1 cm accounts for a 17 g increase in BW) has been observed. The study aims to test differences in small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) rates, employing BW percentile charts based on maternal height between

Transthyretin levels are not related to Apgar score in low birth weight and very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an increased incidence of thyroid dysfunction in premature/low birth weight infants. The cord blood concentrations of transthyretin (TTR), a thyroid hormone binding protein, have also been found to be decreased in preterm infants. While thyroid hormone concentrations are decreased in sick infants, it is not known if physical condition influences TTR levels. Serial concentrations of TTR following birth have not previously been reported. AIMS: To measure serial serum concentrations of TTR in premature infants following birth, and determine whether TTR

Transition of extremely low-birth-weight infants from adolescence to young adulthood: comparison with normal birth-weight controls.

CONTEXT: Traditionally, educational attainment, getting a job, living independently, getting married, and parenthood have been considered as markers of successful transition to adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare the achievement and the age at attainment of the above markers between extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) and normal birth-weight (NBW) young adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A prospective, longitudinal, population-based study in central-west Ontario, Canada, of 166 ELBW participants who weighed 501 to 1000 g at birth (1977-1982) and 145 sociodemographically compa

Incidence of atrial fibrillation in relation to birth weight and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension, type 2 diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases, all risk factors for atrial fibrillation, are associated with birth weight. It remains unclear, however, whether risk of atrial fibrillation is also associated with birth weight. We investigated the associations of birth weight and preterm birth (i.e., born more than one month before term) with risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: The study population comprised 29551 men and 23454 women who were free from AF at baseline. Information on birth weight, preterm birth, and risk factors for AF was obtained from a que

Birth weight and the effects of birth spacing and breastfeeding on infant mortality.

Analyses previously reported, based on data from the World Fertility Survey (WFS), are replicated here with data from the Malaysian Family Life Survey. Comparison of results, when data limitations inherent in the World Fertility Surveys are reproduced or relaxed, suggests that these limitations cause little distortion, and thus bolsters confidence in the validity of results based on WFS data in which these limitations are inescapable. Generalizations based on the present investigation and on the body of previous work that it tends to validate are presented. Most significantly, these include th

Unwanted pregnancies are associated with preterm birth, but not low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies indicate that unintended and unwanted pregnancies can be associated with poor obstetric outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether an unintended or unwanted pregnancy was associated with a preterm delivery and with low birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2017 to 2019 cycle of the National Survey of Family Growth, a nationally-representative population- based survey of reproductive-aged people identifying as female in the United States. The sample consisted of respondents who had at least one prior live birth. Respondents were a

Birth weight among single and multiple births on the Åland islands.

Numerous papers have investigated the distribution of birth weight. This interest arises from the association between birth weight and the future health condition of the child. Birth weight distribution commonly differs slightly from the Gaussian distribution. The distribution is typically split into two components: a predominant Gaussian distribution and an unspecified 'residual' distribution. In this study, we consider birth weight data from the Åland Islands (Finland) for the period 1885-1998. We compare birth weight between males and females and among singletons and twins. Our study confir

Risk factors associated with low birth weight.

OBJECTIVES: Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the major factors affecting child morbidity and mortality worldwide. Every day, approximately 800 women die from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth worldwide. Maternal ill health increases the risk of LBW. This study seeks to investigate determinants and incidence of LBW. METHODS: This study was conducted based on the medical records of mothers and their 1,946 infants born in 2016-2019 at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. Data on mothers and newborn infants were obtained from the Re

Pacemaker therapy in low-birth-weight infants.

Infants born with complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) and fetal bradycardia are frequently born with low birth weight. Three low-birth-weight CAVB infants underwent temporary pacemaker implantation, followed by permanent single-chamber pacemaker implantation at median body weights of 1.7 and 3.2 kg, respectively. All infants caught up with their growth curves and had >3 years of estimated residual battery life. This two-stage strategy was successful in facilitating permanent pacemaker implantation in low-birth-weight babies. Placement of single-chamber pacemaker on the apex of the left vent

Air pollutants associated with insufficient birth weight.

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of studies have shown consistent evidence of the harmful effects of air pollution on human health, as well as its effects on newborn weight. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of air pollution on birth weight, more specifically the insufficient birth weight (identified between 2,500 and 2,999 grams). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on data gathered from all babies born to mothers living in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil, between the years of 2006 to 2010. The association between maternal exposure to air pollution and bi

Association between greenness, urbanicity, and birth weight.

BACKGROUND: More than half of the world's population lives in urban environments. Due to urban related factors (e.g. higher air pollution), urban residents may face higher risk of adverse health outcomes, while access to green space could benefit health. PURPOSE: We explored associations between urban and green land-use and birth weight. METHODS: Connecticut, U.S., birth certificate data (2000-2006) were acquired (n=239,811), and land-use data were obtained from the National Land Cover Database. We focused on three land-uses; urban space, urban open space, and green space (i.e. forest, shrub

Dietary Patterns and Birth Weight-a Review.

Being born with low birth weight (LBW) is recognized as a disadvantage due to risk of early growth retardation, fast catch up growth, infectious disease, developmental delay, and death during infancy and childhood, as well as development of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. LBW is an indicator of fetal response to a limiting intrauterine environment, which may imply developmental changes in organs and tissue. Numerous studies have explored the effect of maternal intake of various nutrients and specific food items on birth weight (BW). Taking into account that people h
