Ingestion of paralytic shellfish toxins in a carnivorous gastropod (Chorus giganteus): effects on their elemental composition and reproductive traits.

The producer of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), Alexandrium catenella, is one of the main generators of HABs in the coasts of Chile. Its presence produces ecological and economic damage, directly affecting filter-feeding organisms, and indirectly to other organism through the trophic chain. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of a toxic diet on the energetic and reproductive parameters of the carnivorous snail Chorus giganteus. Two groups of snails were used, one fed with toxic prey (bivalves fed with A. catenella), and the other fed with non-toxic prey. Both treatments

Parasites and their impact on thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus from two populations in Luxembourg.

The thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 is a species native to many European habitats, with declining populations. The impact of parasite communities on health status of this species is poorly understood. In this study, parasites of 30 U. crassus specimens from the Our and Sauer Rivers in Luxembourg were identified morphologically and, in some cases, using molecular genetic methods. The findings were correlated to selected parameters (total length, visceral weight, shell lesions, gonadal stage). The 2 populations did not differ in shell length, visceral weight, number of m

Mussel foot protein inspired tough tissue-selective underwater adhesive hydrogel.

Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) show strong adhesion to underwater substrates, making mussels tightly cling to reefs to withstand the sea current. Therefore, Mfps-inspired tissue adhesives have aroused much research interest, but tough underwater biological tissue adhesion is still a great challenge. Herein, we report a tough and reversible wet tissue-selective adhesive hydrogel made of poly(acrylic acid-co-catechol) and chitosan (CS). It provides negatively charged -COO-, positively charged -NH3+, catechol group and hydrophobic alkyl chain, resemble amino acids, catechol and hydrophobic units in

First description of freshwater mite Unionicola sauerensis sp. nov. infesting thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus.

A sample of 30 thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus Philipsson (Unionida: Unionidae) was collected from the River Sauer in Luxembourg to acquire data on parasitic infestations of the mussels. Among other parasites, different development stages of freshwater mites were collected from the gills and the mantle of the mussels and were documented with bright-field, stereo, and confocal laser scanning microscopy and microscopic X-ray computed tomography. The retrieved data allowed a morphological description of larvae and female adults of the mites and assigning them to the genus Unionicola Hald

Fate of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) during Cooking: Concentration, Composition, and Distribution.

Paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing microalgal blooms have a significant economic impact on the Southern Rock Lobster ( Jasus edwardsii) fishery in Tasmania, Australia. The regulatory level of 0.8 mg of saxitoxin (STX) eq/kg in place for bivalve shellfish fisheries is applied to lobster hepatopancreas during blooms of toxic algae, resulting in harvest closures and ongoing risk management implications for the fishery. This cooking study was undertaken to inform a human health risk assessment, in conjunction with studies on the uptake and elimination of PST in J. edwardsii. Live lobsters i

Parasite transmission through suspension feeding.

Suspension-feeding bivalve molluscs are confronted with a wide range of materials in the benthic marine environment. These materials include various sized plankton and the organic material derived from it, macroalgae, detritus and a diversity of microbial parasites that have adapted life stages to survive in the water column. For bivalve parasites to infect hosts though, they must first survive and remain infectious in the water column to make initial contact with hosts, and once in contact, enter and overcome elaborate pathways for particle sorting and selection. Even past these defenses, biv

Microbial Diseases of Bivalve Mollusks: Infections, Immunology and Antimicrobial Defense.

A variety of bivalve mollusks (phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia) constitute a prominent commodity in fisheries and aquacultures, but are also crucial in order to preserve our ecosystem's complexity and function. Bivalve mollusks, such as clams, mussels, oysters and scallops, are relevant bred species, and their global farming maintains a high incremental annual growth rate, representing a considerable proportion of the overall fishery activities. Bivalve mollusks are filter feeders; therefore by filtering a great quantity of water, they may bioaccumulate in their tissues a high number of microo

Shellfish as a Potential Source of Hepatitis E Virus: Epidemiological Evidence, Biological Plausibility, and Research Gaps.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important cause of acute and chronic hepatitis worldwide, transmitted primarily through waterborne exposure and zoonotic foodborne pathways. In recent years, shellfish have attracted growing attention as a potential vehicle for HEV transmission. This interest is driven by epidemiological observations linking shellfish consumption to human HEV infection and by repeated detection of HEV RNA in bivalve mollusks across multiple geographic regions. This review critically evaluates the current evidence by integrating epidemiological data, environmental and food surveill

Characterization of a novel lytic bacteriophage SPuP2 against Shewanella putrefaciens and its efficacy in biofilm disruption: A promising antimicrobial strategy.

Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is a major spoilage bacterium in aquatic products, capable of forming persistent biofilms that accelerate spoilage and pose potential food safety risks. However, conventional preservation strategies are often ineffective in preventing or removing biofilms. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop eco-friendly, and safe control strategy. This study aimed to isolate and characterize a novel lytic phage with potent antibiofilm activity against S. putrefaciens and to evaluate its potential as a biocontrol agent in aquatic products. The phage, designat

Sub-lethal effects of innovative anti-corrosion nanoadditives on the marine bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum.

Corrosion significantly affects the maritime industry. To address this issue, corrosion inhibitors are incorporated into polymeric coatings. However, some state-of-the-art inhibitors are toxic, prone to spontaneous leaching, and interact with coating components. Accordingly, benzotriazole (BTA) and gluconate (GCN) have recently emerged as promising alternatives. Their immobilization into layered double hydroxides (LDHs) prevents direct contact with the polymeric matrix. It also allows a controlled release of BTA or GCN in response to specific stimuli (e.g., seawater, pH changes), thus providin

Ecosystem engineers enhance the multifunctionality of an urban novel ecosystem: Population persistence and ecosystem resilience since the 1980s.

In degraded urban habitats, nature-based solutions aim to enhance ecosystem functioning and service provision. Bivalves are increasingly reintroduced to urban environments to enhance water quality through biofiltration, yet their long-term sustainability remains uncertain. Following the restoration of the disused South Docks in Liverpool in the 1980s, natural colonization of mussels rapidly improved dock-basin water quality and supported diverse taxa, including other filter feeders. While the initial colonization phase has been well documented, there has been limited published research since t

Factors determining bioaccumulation of neurotoxicant Hg in the zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha): Influence of biometric parameters, sex and storage of shell.

One of benthic organisms exposed to contact with mercury in the southern Baltic is alien species of clam: Dreissena polymorpha. As this organism is increasingly dynamic in various regions of the world including the southern Baltic region, it is reasonable to ask whether it tolerates elevated concentrations of xenobiotics? Does it effectively eliminate Hg? The study determined the effects of biometric parameters and water temperature on the rate of accumulation and efficiency of eliminating Hg from body. Investigations focused on the shell which represents poorly-recognized role in the process

Applying an ensemble of small models in predicting habitat suitability of invasive M. sallei along the southern coast of China.

A false mussel Mytilopsis sallei has caused serious ecological and economic losses after invading in China. In this research, we first assessed the niche differentiation between its native range and invasive range in China and then predicted the habitat suitability along the southern coast of China under present and future climatic circumstances. Distance to shore and water depth were the first two important factors in affecting the distribution of M. sallei, followed by minimum chlorophyll concentration and salinity. The niche of M. sallei shows significant expansion and unfilling. The ensemb

Foodborne protozoan parasites in fresh mussels and oysters purchased at retail in Canada.

Studies worldwide have reported the presence of protozoan parasites in a variety of commercial bivalve shellfish. The uptake of these parasites by shellfish occurs during filter feeding in faecally-contaminated waters. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Toxoplasma in fresh, live shellfish purchased in three Canadian provinces as part of the retail surveillance activities led by FoodNet Canada (Public Health Agency of Canada). Packages containing mussels (n = 253) or oysters (n = 130) were purchased at grocery stores in FoodNet Can

Prevalence and distribution of domoic acid and cyclic imines in bivalve mollusks from Beibu Gulf, China.

Beibu Gulf is an important shellfish aquaculture area in the northwest of the South China Sea, China. In this study, the toxin profile and spatial-temporal distribution of domoic acid (DA) and 10 lipophilic phycotoxins were systematically analyzed in the bivalve mollusks collected in Beibu Gulf from October 2018 to October 2020. Neurotoxin DA was first detected in the mollusks from the investigative regions with a prevalence of 17.7%, peaking at 401 µg kg-1. Cyclic imines (CIs) including gymnodimine-A (GYM-A, 46.6%) and 13-desmethyl-spirolide-C (SPX1, 15.8%) predominated the lipophilic phycoto

Toxicological Analysis of Gonad Development in Green Mussels (Perna viridis) in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia.

Background and Objective: The accumulation of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in mussels is very high compared to that in another marine biota. The mussels are sessile, widely distributed filter-feeding organisms, with the ability to sequester many lipophilic organic compounds, absorb anything in their surroundings. The very low mobility allows heavy metal bioaccumulation to occur and cannot avoid pollutants, which increase over time. This bioaccumulation can be toxic to mussels. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different toxic chemicals and histological chan

Effects of first intermediate host density, host size and salinity on trematode infections in mussels of the south-western Baltic Sea.

Trematode prevalence and abundance in hosts are known to be affected by biotic drivers as well as by abiotic drivers. In this study, we used the unique salinity gradient found in the south-western Baltic Sea to: (i) investigate patterns of trematode infections in the first intermediate host, the periwinkle Littorina littorea and in the downstream host, the mussel Mytilus edulis, along a regional salinity gradient (from 13 to 22) and (ii) evaluate the effects of first intermediate host (periwinkle) density, host size and salinity on trematode infections in mussels. Two species dominated the tre
