BACKGROUND: The current global pandemic has created unprecedented challenges in the blood supply network. Given the recent shortages, there must be a civilian plan for massively bleeding patients when there are no blood products on the shelf. Recognizing that the time to death in bleeding patients is less than 2 h, timely resupply from unaffected locations is not possible. One solution is to transfuse emergency untested whole blood (EUWB), similar to the extensive military experience fine-tuned over the last 19 years. While this concept is anathema in current civilian transfusion practice, it

This paper deals with the actuality of the Umbilical Cord Blood Banks (UCBB). Its aim is to offer the necessary notions for the understanding of their nature and of the ethical problems which they carry associated. In order to do this it will lean, on one hand, on the actual bibliography about blood of the umbilical cord and its present and future applications, and on the other hand, on the document of the European Group of Ethics where this issue is discussed. It is of special interest here the existence of the banks called "autologous" that, for some authors, seem to contradict the principle

BACKGROUND: The polymorphic nature of the HLA system reduces a patient's probability of finding an HLA-compatible unrelated bone marrow (BM) donor, even though more than 6 million individuals are enrolled in international registries. Recently, umbilical cord blood (UCB) has been successfully employed as a source of HPCs. The use of such cells reduces the risk of GVHD and allows transplants with one or two HLA mismatches. UCB represents an expensive resource: therefore, it is necessary to carefully manage the UCB unit inventory.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The current study analyzed the genetic

Hurricanes and flooding pose serious challenges to the stability of the blood supply, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Florida. We aimed to describe and evaluate the preparedness, response and recovery strategies of a large blood centre over the past decade, with a focus on Hurricane Irma (2017). Drawing on the centre's Business Continuity Plan, after-event reports and disaster response data, we examined how operations were disrupted and how the blood supply was maintained under extreme conditions. Combined, these storms resulted in tens of millions of dollars in losses through cance

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that blood donation reduces risks of developing cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, atherosclerosis, and stroke. Although there are known benefits of blood donation, the inclination of people of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to donate blood is not known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine demograpic and blood biochemical profiles of regular and first-time blood donors in the Sulaimani province of North Iraq.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Sulaimani Blood Bank, during the period of April 1, 2016 to March 28, 20

Mass casualty incidents and massive transfusion requirements continue to plague the USA with hemorrhage remaining the number one cause of death in trauma. The unfortunate reality of numerous mass shootings in Southwest Texas has led to the need for a way in which to provide blood during these events as rapidly as it is required. Multiple agencies within the Southwest Texas system have united to help provide this life-saving blood to people when they need it most. This effort began with the development of a system for safe, efficient, and now widespread use of whole blood in the region. After d

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a disease caused by Leishmania parasites. While predominantly transmitted by sandflies, cases of VL transmitted through blood transfusion have been reported, particularly in immunocompromised recipients. Although Leishmania parasites have been found in blood donors in some VL endemic areas, this has never been studied in East-Africa, where HIV prevalence is relatively high. We established the prevalence of asymptomatic Leishmania infection and associated socio-demographic factors among blood donors presenting at two blood bank sites (Metema and Gondar) in northwe

This study was aimed to describe the chemical traces of air pollution in blood of residents and evaluate the association between ambient pollution and its dose absorbed internally by a human body. The national Magen David Adom Blood Services blood donation collection platform and the National Public Health Laboratory's testing services were utilized to conduct a human biomonitoring study among blood donors in Israel. The donors' residential addresses and donations sites' locations were geocoded and merged with the levels of pollutants recorded by the nearby monitoring stations. Pollutants incl

Cord Blood (CB) is a unique and readily available source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. CB also contains other types of stem cells, including endothelial stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells, that may prove useful in non-traditional clinical uses. Genetic and molecular analyses have demonstrated that CB stem cells lie somewhere between mature stem cells like those found in Bone Marrow (BM), and fetal stem cells. After 25 years of clinical experience, CB is now used in the same fashion as BM for all typical malignant and genetic diseases treated by bone marrow transplant. Due

For an industry to succeed and satisfy its customers, "QUALITY" must be a primary goal. Quality has been central to blood banking from its inception, with the evolution of a Quality Program since the opening of the first blood bank in U.S. at the Cook County Hospital in 1937. Over the ensuing decades, continuous scientific progress in blood preservation, filters, viral and blood group testing, crossmatching, automation, and computerization including bar coding, etc. has contributed to the quality and safety of the blood products and transfusion service. However, with the advent of the AIDS era

Since 1995, when the first, non-governmental umbilical cord blood bank (CB bank) was created in Kanagawa prefecture, 9 local CB banks have been established in Hokkaido, Kanto, Tokai, Kinki and Kyusyu district. According to the experiences of organizing these local banks and of collecting the data of cord blood cell transplantation by 2 grant study groups, The Ministry of Health and Welfare is now creating national cord blood banking system, which will be opened in the coming April.

This report details the results of a 1995 survey of the 40 fellowship training programs in blood banking and transfusion medicine in the United States approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Fellows primarily enter transfusion medicine training after completing a pathology residency, and are subsequently employed in an academic or university setting, or a blood donor center. Program directors indicated that either the current level, or fewer, transfusion medicine specialists will be needed in the future. The educational content of fellowship training was examined,

Maintaining an adequate blood product inventory is a complex challenge that intersects blood bank operations, clinical decision-making, and systems-level institutional policy. Anesthesiologists occupy a uniquely influential position in blood stewardship, responsible for preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and real-time transfusion decisions. This review examines the fundamentals of blood banking as they apply to perioperative practice, the epidemiology of blood product demand and shortage including the national crisis of type O blood depletion, and the evidence base for patient

OBJECTIVES: To study the main causes of pre-donation blood donors' deferral in a Brazilian blood bank.
BACKGROUND: Blood donor selection is the most important process to maintain transfusion safeness. Pre-donation deferral aims to avoid the transmission of infectious diseases in the serological window, as well as to preserve blood donors' health.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study undertaken in a single blood centre in Curitiba, Brazil, taking into account the number of blood donations per year, the number of annual donations by gender and the total number of blood donors deferred annua

CONTEXT: A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in India. Blood safety thus becomes a top priority, especially with a population of around 1.23 billion and a high prevalence rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in general population. Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) in blood donor screening has been implemented in many developed countries to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted viral infections (TTIs). NAT takes care of the dynamics of window period of viruses and offers the safest blood pack for

BACKGROUND: An adverse transfusion reaction (ATR) is an unfavorable reaction to the transfused unit, the severity of which may be different among individuals depending upon the type of reaction and the patient's susceptibility. Transfusion reactions may be immediate or delayed type depending on the onset and immune or nonimmune type depending on the pathogenesis. A study was conducted to study the frequency of various transfusion reactions and the associated morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All ATRs occurring over a period of 3 years at a tertiary care health center were studied in detail ac

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, there has been a worrying increase in the prevalence of syphilis. Blood banks have a major role in monitoring the trend of these events, despite the bias due to the altruistic donation strategy.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the seroprevalence of syphilis and analyse its association with defined risk factors among blood donors at the regional blood center at Hospital Prof. Dr. J. P. Garrahan, period 2016-2022.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Donor screening was performed with treponemal and non-treponemal tests to determine the prevalence of active and past syphilis. Sociodemographi
