Lack of muscle glycogen phosphorylase activity leads to McArdle's disease, a rare metabolic myopathy. To investigate its molecular basis at the nucleic acid level, we isolated muscle phosphorylase cDNA clones from a human cDNA library in Escherichia coli plasmid pBR 322. Two sequential clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn) were isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (Kpn#1) and sputum (Kpn#2) of a patient with pneumonia, complicated by anatomical and immunosuppressive problems due to Wegener's granulomatosis. Oral health complications in diabetes include decreased salivary secretion. The SLC5A1 gene encodes the Na(+)-glucose cotransporter SGLT1 protein, which not only transports glucose, but also acts as a water channel.
