A global blueberry phylogeny: Evolution, diversification, and biogeography of Vaccinieae (Ericaceae).

Vaccinieae is a morphologically diverse and species-rich (∼1430 species) tribe in Ericaceae. Although the majority of diversity is tropical, Vaccinieae are best known for temperate crops (i.e., blueberries, cranberries, and lingonberries) in Vaccinium. Vaccinium itself (∼500 species) has been previously suggested as highly polyphyletic and taxonomic boundaries among many of the other genera in the tribe remain uncertain. We assessed the evolutionary history of Vaccinieae with phylogenomic analyses based on a target-enrichment dataset containing 256 low-copy nuclear loci and 210 species represe

Blueberry-added black tea: Effects of infusion temperature, drying method, fruit concentration on the iron-polyphenol complex formation, polyphenols profile, antioxidant activity, and sensory properties.

Herein, a food-to-food fortification with blueberries and black tea was performed for people suffering from iron deficiency, creating a new functional product with high consumer acceptance. Black tea was mixed with varying concentrations of sun-dried or freeze-dried blueberries and infused at different temperatures. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the addition of blueberries to black tea inhibited the formation of the iron-polyphenol complex by up to 97 % (p <.001). Using β-carotene bleaching and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assays, 50 % freeze-dried blueberry and 50 % black tea (FD

Evaluation of Attractants for Monitoring Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii Matsumura is an economically important pest of soft and small fruit crops. Unlike other drosophilid flies, D. suzukii is capable of infesting ripe and partially ripe fruit, which poses a significant pest management challenge, as there is no tolerance for infested or damaged fruit in the marketplace. As a result, producers in many regions rely on calendar-scheduled insecticide applications for D. suzukii management. In order to develop an integrated pest management approach, better tools for monitoring adult fly populations are needed. Over two growing seasons in southern Ont

Bacteriophages Control Epiphytic Pseudomonas syringae Populations in Highbush Blueberry Leaves.

The Pseudomonas syringae complex (Psc) is a group of globally distributed phytopathogens responsible for substantial agricultural losses. Although bacteriophage-based biocontrol has shown promise against Psc, no studies have examined phages targeting blueberry-tropic Psc lineages. Here, we isolated phages infecting Psc strains from diseased highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), and evaluated their suitability for biocontrol using a multi-stage screening pipeline incorporating host-range analysis, comparative genomics, environmental stability testing, in vitro antibacterial efficacy assays

How does fertilizer management strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation change the phytochemical profile and phenoloxidases activity during fruit ripening?

BACKGROUND: Highbush blueberry fruits have attracted a lot of attention from consumers due to their exquisite taste and considerable quantities of bioactive compounds. This premium-class foodstuff also contains antioxidant enzymes (phenoloxidases) implicated in the degradation of polyphenols that lead to discoloration and loss of antioxidant activity during fruit ripening. Despite substantial progress in research focused on fruit quality, unanswered questions remain about the effect of fertilizer strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation on the phytochemical content and phenoloxidases activit

Inhibition of proliferation by agricultural plant extracts in seven human adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL)-related cell lines.

Adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL) is caused by human T-cell leukaemia virus type I (HTLV-I) infection and is resistant to conventional chemotherapy. We evaluated the inhibitory effects of agricultural plants on the proliferation of seven ATL-related human leukaemia cells, using three ATL cell lines (ED, Su9T01 and S1T), two human T-cell lines transformed by HTLV-I infection (HUT-102 and MT-2) and two HTLV-I-negative human T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia cell lines (Jurkat and MOLT-4). A total of 52 samples of 80% ethanol extracts obtained from 30 types of agricultural plants were examined. On

Comparative Transcriptome Analyses Provide Potential Insights into Molecular Mechanisms of Anthocyanin-Rich Blueberry Extract in Rapid Intervention Against Acute Alcohol Exposure in Mice.

Alcohol-induced health damage has become an increasing global public health concern. Anthocyanins exhibit essential biological activities, including antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and lipid reduction. This study investigates the rapid intervention effects and mechanisms of anthocyanin-rich blueberry extract in mitigating acute alcohol exposure in mice, aiming to uncover its novel nutritional roles. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fasted for 6 h and randomly assigned to three groups (CON, EOH, and EOH-BE, n = 8) for the experimental study. The results demonstrated that 1 h after alcoh

A Performance Index as a Measure of the Host Suitability to Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, known as spotted wing drosophila (SWD), is an Asiatic invasive fruit pest that has spread over the world in the last 15 years, due to its high reproductive rate, its tolerance to different environmental conditions, the international fruit trade, and its wide range of host plants. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, blueberry is a major susceptible crop, although other cultivated and non-cultivated fruit species are frequent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the host suitability of commercial and non-cultivated fruit species (blueberries, plums, mulberries, and cherri

Comparison of Commercial Lures and Food Baits for Early Detection of Fruit Infestation Risk by Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura; Diptera: Drosophilidae) is one of the most serious invasive pests of berries and cherries worldwide. Several adult monitoring systems are available to time foliar application of insecticides with the expectation of detecting the presence of D. suzukii before they infest susceptible crops. We tested this by comparing four different trapping systems based on two homemade baits, apple cider vinegar (ACV) or fermenting dough, and two fermentation volatile-based commercial lures, Scentry and Trécé. Traps baited with dough or Scentry captured more D. suzukii than traps

Blueberries prevent the effect of intermittent hypobaric hypoxia in rat epididymis.

Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) induced a decrease in sperm count and oxidative damage in epididymis. We have previously demonstrated that a blueberry-enriched polyphenol extract (BB-4) reduced the adverse effects of oxidative stress in rat testis under hypobaric hypoxia. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether BB-4 could reverse oxidative stress in epididymis. To evaluate the protective role of BB-4 in epididymis, male rats were exposed to IHH. Lipid peroxidation, (LPO) expression and activity of glutathione reductase (GR) were evaluated. Our results showed a reduction in LPO and a

Procyanidin B2: A promising multi-functional food-derived pigment for human diseases.

Natural edible pigments play a paramount part in the food industry. Procyanidin B2 (PB2), one of the most representative naturally occurring edible pigments, is usually isolated from the seeds, fruits, and leaves of lots of common plants, such as grapes, Hawthorn, black soybean, as well as blueberry, and functions as a food additive in daily life. Notably, PB2 has numerous bioactivities and possesses the potential to treat/prevent a wide range of human diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, diabetic complications, atherosclerosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and the underlying mechani

Omics Insights Into the Effects of Highbush Blueberry and Cranberry Crop Agroecosystems on Honey Bee Health and Physiology.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are vital pollinators in fruit-producing agroecosystems like highbush blueberry (HBB) and cranberry (CRA). However, their health is threatened by multiple interacting stressors, including pesticides, pathogens, and nutritional changes. We tested the hypothesis that distinct agricultural ecosystems-with different combinations of agrochemical exposure, pathogen loads, and floral resources-elicit ecosystem-specific, tissue-level molecular responses in honey bees. We conducted an integrated multi-omics analysis using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), proteomics, and gut microbi

Inactivation of hepatitis A virus and norovirus on berries by broad-spectrum pulsed light.

Foodborne diseases are still a major global health and economic burden, and are mainly caused by viral pathogens, such as human norovirus and hepatitis A virus, which may remain infective for long times on food contact surfaces and on produce. The strategies of viral inactivation applied in the industry are not generally suitable for delicate foods such as berries. Brief exposure to high-intensity white light (UV to IR) has been shown to inactivate many bacteria. The effectiveness of this treatment against foodborne viruses on fresh produce is largely unknown. We show that pulsed light treatme

Probable blueberry-induced haemolysis in a G6PD deficient child: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Blueberry is a North American native fruit increasingly popular as a source of health-promoting bioactive compounds. However, there is evidence in the literature stating that blueberries should be avoided in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of a G6PD deficient child who developed haemolysis approximately after half a day following the intake of fresh blueberry. He presented with the complaints of the passage of orange coloured urine and hurried breathing. The child had haemoglobin of 7.9 g/dl on admis
