Atypical presentation of human bocavirus: Severe respiratory tract infection complicated with encephalopathy.

Human bocavirus (HBOV) has been reported as a worldwide distributed respiratory pathogen. It has also been associated with encephalitis recently by detection of the virus in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients presented with encephalitis. This retrospective study aimed to present clinical features of HBOV infections in children with respiratory symptoms and describe unexplained encephalopathy in a subgroup of these patients. Results of 1,143 pediatric nasal samples from mid-December 2013 to July 2014 were reviewed for detection of HBOV. A multiplex real time polymerase chain reaction assay w

Detection of Human Bocavirus DNA by Multiplex PCR Analysis: Postmortem Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a virus belonging to the Parvoviridae family, which has been newly discovered to be associated with respiratory tract infections in children. There are many reports worldwide on the endemicity of this virus. Since it is relatively new, it is not routinely detected in clinical laboratory investigations. CASE REPORT: We demonstrated that HBoV infection caused the death of a 5-month-old girl with a history of high fever and wheezing. Human bocavirus (HBoV 1/2/3/4) was found in a nasopharyngeal swab, paraffin-embedded lung tissue and stool samples by multiple

[Very rare and life-threatening complications of bocavirus bronchiolitis: pneumomediastinum and bilateral pneumothorax].

Human bocavirus (HBoV), that was first identified in 2005 and classified in Parvoviridae family, is a small, non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus, responsible for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, especially in young children. Although HBoV generally causes self-limited influenza-like illness, it may also lead to pneumonia, bronchiolitis, croup and asthma attacks. In this report, a case of acute bronchiolitis complicated with pneumomediastinum and bilateral pneumothorax caused by HBoV has been presented. A three-year-old boy was referred to our pediatric intensive care unit wit

Detection of human bocavirus type 1 infection in Panamanian children with respiratory illness.

The human bocavirus (HBoV) was added as a new member of the Parvoviridae family in 2005 upon its discovery in nasopharyngeal aspirates from children with respiratory infection. Recently, there has been increasing evidence of worldwide circulation of HBoV; however, in Latin America few studies have been conducted. In order to detect the circulation of HBoV in Panama, based on the National Flu Surveillance System, we developed this retrospective, cross-sectional study, from January 2011 to January 2012. Children younger than 6 years old who presented with respiratory disease were enrolled in thi

Infections and coinfections by respiratory human bocavirus during eight seasons in hospitalized children.

The human bocavirus (hBoV) has been identified in respiratory infections in children in a large number of studies. Despite this, the pathogenic role of the HBoV is under discussion. The main objectives of the study were: to determine the incidence of HBoV in hospitalized children; to describe the main clinical features of the positive children; and to compare the data with those from other viral infections in the same population. A prospective study was performed between 2005 and 2013 including children up to 14-year old with respiratory infection admitted to the Severo Ochoa Hospital (Spain).

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Human Bocavirus Detected in Croatian Children with Respiratory Infection.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) 1 is considered an important respiratory pathogen, while the role of HBoV2-4 in clinical disease remains somewhat controversial. Since, they are characterized by a rapid evolution, worldwide surveillance of HBoVs' genetics is necessary. This study explored the prevalence of HBoV genotypes in pediatric patients with respiratory tract infection in Croatia and studied their phylogeny. Using multiplex PCR for 15 respiratory viruses, we investigated 957 respiratory samples of children up to 18 years of age with respiratory tract infection obtained from May 2017 to March 2021

In silico prediction of potential vaccine candidates on capsid protein of human bocavirus 1.

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is a newly identified parvovirus that causes serious respiratory infection among children across the globe. Aim of the present study was to predict immunogenic residues located on the VP2 protein of HBoV1 towards development of epitope based vaccines. Several computational tools were employed to predict epitopes (bothT and B cell restricted) with stringent regulation for the improvement of confidence. After meticulous analysis, the peptide "TTPWTYFNFNQY" was identified as potential candidate for development of preventive vaccine. Of note, the epitope "TTPWTYFNFNQY" wa

Identification and genomic characterization of a novel rat bocavirus from brown rats in China.

Despite recent discoveries of novel animal bocaparvoviruses, current understandings on the diversity and evolution of bocaparvoviruses are still limited. We report the identification and genome characterization of a novel bocaparvovirus, rat bocaparvovirus (RBoV), in brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) in China. RBoV was detected in 11.5%, 2.4%, 16.2% and 0.3% of alimentary, respiratory, spleen and kidney samples respectively, of 636 brown rats by PCR, but not in samples of other rodent species, suggesting that brown rats are the primary reservoir of RBoV. Six RBoV genomes sequenced from three brow

Human bocavirus infection as a cause of severe acute respiratory tract infection in children.

In 2005 human bocavirus (HBoV) was discovered in respiratory tract samples of children. The role of HBoV as the single causative agent for respiratory tract infections remains unclear. Detection of HBoV in children with respiratory disease is frequently in combination with other viruses or bacteria. We set up an algorithm to study whether HBoV alone can cause severe acute respiratory tract infection (SARI) in children. The algorithm was developed to exclude cases with no other likely cause than HBoV for the need for admission to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with SARI. We searched

Detection of human bocavirus 1 and 2 from children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan.

This study reports the detection and the genetic characterization of HBoV, a new member in the Parvoviridae family. Among 177 fecal specimens collected from children with diarrhea younger than 5 years in Japan, 11 (6.2%) were positive for HBoV. Co-infection with other enteric viruses (norovirus and adenovirus) was found in nine (81.8%) pediatric patients, while monoinfection by HBoV alone was detected in two (18.2%) cases. Nucleotide sequence analysis of 11 Japanese HBoV strains revealed that seven HBoV sequences were most closely related to other HBoV 1 reference strains, while the other four

Systematic review and meta-analysis of human bocavirus as food safety risk in shellfish.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is an emerging pathogen causing gastroenteritis/respiratory tract infection. Shellfish has been implicated in foodborne HBoV dissemination. The present investigation aimed at synthesising shellfish-associated HBoV data. Shellfish-HBoV data were mined from public repositories using topic-specific algorithm. A total of 30 data sources was identified of which 5 were synthesised. The average HBoV positivity and sample-size was 12 ± 9.2 and 134.2 ± 113.6, respectively. HBoV was studied in mollusc with 3.7-83.3% crude prevalence. The pooled HBoV prevalence in shellfish was 9.2
