Raising the U.S. Army Height-Weight (Body Mass Index) Standards: Quantifying Metabolic Risk.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The U.S. Army fell 25% short of its recruitment goal in 2022 and therefore, increasing the eligibility pool for potential recruits is of interest. Raising the body mass index (BMI) standards for eligibility presents a path to increase the recruitable population; however, there may be additional costs incurred due to attendant health risks that may be present in individuals with higher BMI. METHODS: We filtered the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by age (17-25 years) and BMI (up to 30 kg/m2). A k-means cluster analysis was performed on the fi

Height, body mass index, and socioeconomic status: mendelian randomisation study in UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether height and body mass index (BMI) have a causal role in five measures of socioeconomic status. DESIGN: Mendelian randomisation study to test for causal effects of differences in stature and BMI on five measures of socioeconomic status. Mendelian randomisation exploits the fact that genotypes are randomly assigned at conception and thus not confounded by non-genetic factors. SETTING: UK Biobank. PARTICIPANTS: 119,669 men and women of British ancestry, aged between 37 and 73 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Age completed full time education, degree level education

Body mass index, height, and risk of lymphatic malignancies: a prospective cohort study.

The association among body mass index (BMI), height, and the risk of lymphatic malignancies was investigated in the Netherlands Cohort Study. The participants (n = 120,852), Dutch men and women aged 55-69 years, completed a self-administered questionnaire at baseline in 1986. After 13.3 years of follow-up, data on 1,042 lymphatic malignancy cases (including diffuse large-cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, multiple myeloma, and other subtypes) and 4,588 subcohort members were available. Incidence rate ratios were estimated by using Cox regression models. BMI at baseline and BMI change

Allometric models of adult regional body lengths and circumferences to height: Insights from a three-dimensional body image scanner.

OBJECTIVES: Recent reports on body regional mass scalings to height have advanced understanding differences in adult heights. These studies resulted in conjectures on how regional lengths and circumferences may scale to height. We provide evidence for these conjectures by analyzing a large sample of regional limb, trunk, chest, and head lengths and circumferences in a large sample of US Army basic training recruits. METHODS: Participants consisted of 10 271 males and 2760 females ages 17 to 21 years old who reported for basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. Participants were imaged by a three-d

Final height and body mass index after fractionated total body irradiation and allogeneic stem cell transplantation in childhood leukemia.

Impaired linear growth has been reported in patients treated during childhood with allogeneic stem cell transplantation and fractionated total body irradiation (fTBI). The objective of this study was to determine the final height and body mass index (BMI) achieved. Forty-nine patients with leukemia were included and surveyed for more than 5 years. Median age at follow-up was 24.3 years (range, 18.9-35.8) and median follow-up time from allograft was 14.4 years (range, 4.5-21.9). Mean height standard deviation score (s.d.s.) at final examination (-1.1 ± 1.3,) was significantly lower than at fTBI

The Influence of Gender, Age, and Body Mass Index on Arch Height and Arch Stiffness.

Arch structure and arch function play an important role in maintaining balance, bearing body weight, and absorbing ground reaction forces. However, arch structure and arch function are known to vary extensively and may be affected by factors such as gender, age, and obesity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) on arch height and arch stiffness. A total of 173 participants (aged 57.60 ± 11.19 years, mean BMI 25.12 ± 3.93 kg/m2) participated in this cross-sectional study. A 3-dimensional laser scanner was used to measure foo

Avoiding "Too Tall" and "Too Short": The Effect of the Community on the Regulation of Body Height.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence emphasizes the role of social signaling in the regulation of human growth. AIM: To disentangle the influence of physical living conditions such as wealth, health, nutrition, and education from influences that are transmitted among members of the social group. We consider the spectrum of all historically possible heights ("transgenerational growth potential") and disentangle the influence of the physical living conditions from influences that are transmitted among members of the same social group. We ask (1) what is the magnitude of the "transgenerational growth pot

Evaluation of the MC3R gene pertaining to body weight and height regulation and puberty development.

Recent studies reported an impact of the melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) on the regulation of body weight, linear growth and puberty timing. Previously, allele p.44Ile of a frequent non-synonymous variant (NSV) p.Val44Ile was reported to be associated with decreased lean body mass (LBM) and later puberty in both sexes. We Sanger sequenced the coding region of MC3R in 185 children or adolescents with short normal stature (SNS) or 258 individuals with severe obesity, and 192 healthy-lean individuals. Eleven variants (six NSVs) were identified. In-silico analyses ensued. Three rare loss-of-functio

Morphometric parameters of the human pineal gland in relation to age, body weight and height.

The aim of the study was to compare the size, weight, volume and density of the pineal gland in several groups divided by age, body weight and height. 80 human pineal glands were included in the study. Obtained data were statistically analysed by means of Statistica by Statsoft to check existing differences. Obtained data show some significant differences between pineal gland morphometry in weight- and height-related groups. However, these differences do not influence pineal volume significantly. Differences between the pineal gland volume in the maximal and in the minimal weight groups may su

Estimating eyeball protrusion from body height, interpupillary distance, and inter-orbital distance in adults.

Eyeball protrusion is one characteristic that must be assessed/predicted in craniofacial identification methods of skull-face superimposition and facial approximation. Previously it has been suggested that average exophthalmometry values, as measured on living individuals, should be used. However, it is unknown if proptosis prediction can be improved beyond the accuracy obtained when using mean values. Some authors have suggested that relationships between exophthalmos, height, interpupillary distance, and interorbital distance exist and it has been reported that these latter variables can be

Twenty-five years of national service--changes in height, weight and body mass index.

The height and weight of 18-year-old Singapore National Service enlistees were extracted from computer records spanning 25 years (1967-1991). These were analysed for mean height, weight and body mass index (BMI) which overall show increases of 4.12 cm, 10.13 kg and 2.60 kg/m2 respectively. All ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Others) show a similar rising trend. While mean height appears to have stabilised in recent years, mean weight continues to rise. This is reflected in an increasing mean BMI. The proportion of 18-year-old male recruits with a BMI in the overweight range (> or = 2

Waist-to-height ratio, body circumference index and body shape index of abdominal obesity to identify OSA: Results from NHANES.

Obesity plays a significant role in the development of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The primary aim of this research was to compare 3 key obesity metrics: waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body roundness index (BRI), and a body shape index (ABSI), to assess their correlation with OSA. Identifying OSA at an early stage can lead to more favorable treatment outcomes. This cross-sectional investigation leveraged data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected during 2 periods: 2005 to 2008 and 2015 to 2018. The primary objective was to examine the relationships among differe
