Olfaction in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is associated with a range of sensory disturbances on the symptomatic side of the body but whether this includes olfaction is uncertain. To clarify this, the aims of this study were to compare ratings of intensity and hedonic appeal of household odorants in CRPS patients and controls, and to determine whether ratings differed between the symptomatic and contralateral sides within the sample of patients. METHODS: Six odorants (vanilla, fish sauce, vinegar, eucalyptus, almond essence and acetone) were presented sequentially in random order on cot

Odor-induced recall of emotional memories in PTSD-Review and new paradigm for research.

It is clinically well known that olfactory intrusions in PTSD can be a disabling phenomena due to the involuntary recall of odor memories. Odorants can trigger involuntary recall of emotional memories as well have the potential to help diminishing emotional arousal as grounding stimuli. Despite major advances in our understanding of the function of olfactory system, the study of the relation of olfaction and emotional memory is still relatively scarce. Odor memory is long thought to be different than other types of memories such as verbal or visual memories, being more strongly engraved and mo

BBS4 is required for intraflagellar transport coordination and basal body number in mammalian olfactory cilia.

Bardet-Beidl syndrome (BBS) manifests from genetic mutations encoding for one or more BBS proteins. BBS4 loss impacts olfactory ciliation and odor detection, yet the cellular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report that Bbs4-/- mice exhibit shorter and fewer olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) cilia despite retaining odorant receptor localization. Within Bbs4-/- OSN cilia, we observed asynchronous rates of IFT-A/B particle movements, indicating miscoordination in IFT complex trafficking. Within the OSN dendritic knob, the basal bodies are dynamic, with incorporation of ectopically expressed cent

Multiple effects of carbon, sulfur and iron on microbial mercury methylation in black-odorous sediments.

Black-odorous sediments provide ideal conditions for microbial mercury methylation. However, the multiple effects of carbon, sulfur, and iron on the microbial methylmercury of mercury in black-odorous sediments remains unclear. In this study, we conducted mercury methylation experiments using sediments collected from organically contaminated water bodies, as well as black-odorous sediments simulated in the laboratory. The results showed that black-odorous sediments exhibit a high capacity for mercury methylation. By simulating the blackening and odorization process in sediments, it was confirm

Localized changes in olfactory bulb morphology associated with early olfactory learning.

Young rats exposed to an odor while receiving reinforcing stimulation come to approach that odor upon subsequent presentation. In addition, such pups have increased 14C-2-deoxyglucose (2DG) uptake within focal areas of the glomerular layer in response to that odor, compared to control animals experiencing the odor for the first time. In this study, the morphology of the glomerular areas underlying these 2DG foci was examined to determine whether early olfactory learning imposed local structural changes that could produce the enhanced 2DG uptake. Alternate sections either were processed with a

[Skin flora, odor and malaria transmission].

Malaria, which is transmitted primarily by bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes, is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that poses a serious threat to human health. Host body odor is a key factor to attract Anopheles mosquitoes. Upon Plasmodium infection, host body odors change, leading to increased attractiveness to female Anopheles mosquitoes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain clear. A recent study reported remarkable changes of skin flora and volatile substances in mice following Plasmodium infections, and ethylbenzene was found to increase host attractiveness to mosquitoes, which p

Diurnal and seasonal variations of odor and gas emissions from a naturally ventilated free-stall dairy barn on the Canadian prairies.

UNLABELLED: This study characterized the seasonal concentration (C) and emission (E) patterns of odor, ammonia (NH3), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) over the course of a whole year and their diurnal patterns in cold, warm, and mild seasons for a naturally ventilated free-stall dairy barn. It was found that seasonal odor and NH3 and H2S emissions varied greatly: from 17.2 to 84.4 odor units (OU) sec-1 AU-1 (AU: animal unit, 500 kg of animal body mass), from 0.27 to 0.92 mg sec-1 AU-1, and from 3 to 105 μg sec-1 AU-1, respectively. The overall concentrations of odor and NH3 were higher in the winter

A headspace collection chamber for whole body volatilomics.

The human body secretes a complex blend of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via the skin, breath and bodily fluids, the study of which can provide valuable insight into the physiological and metabolic state of an individual. Methods to profile human-derived volatiles typically source VOCs from bodily fluids, exhaled breath or skin of isolated body parts. To facilitate profiling the whole body volatilome, we have engineered a sampling chamber that enables the collection and analysis of headspace from the entire human body. Whole body VOCs were collected from a cohort of 20 humans and analyzed

Vasopressin differentially modulates the excitability of rat olfactory bulb neuron subtypes.

Vasopressin (VP) plays a crucial role in social memory even at the level of the olfactory bulb (OB), where OB VP cells are activated during social interactions. However, it remains unclear how VP modulates olfactory processing to enable enhanced discrimination of very similar odors, e.g., rat body odors. Thus far, it has been shown that VP reduces firing rates in mitral cells (MCs) during odor presentation in vivo and decreases the amplitudes of olfactory nerve-evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials (ON-evoked EPSPs) in external tufted cells in vitro. We performed whole-cell patch-clamp rec

Olfactory reference syndrome: issues for DSM-V.

The published literature on olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) spans more than a century and provides consistent descriptions of its clinical features. The core symptom is preoccupation with the belief that one emits a foul or offensive body odor, which is not perceived by others. This syndrome is associated with substantial distress and disability. DSM-IV and ICD-10 do not explicitly mention ORS, but note convictions about emitting a foul body odor in their description of delusional disorder, somatic type. However, the fact that such symptoms can be nondelusional poses a diagnostic conundrum.

Of scents and cytokines: How olfactory and food aversions relate to nausea and immunomodulation in early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, the maternal body undergoes extensive physiological adaptations to support embryonic growth, including whole-body remodeling, that may induce odor and food aversions, as well as nausea and vomiting. The biological mechanisms behind odor and food aversions, as well as nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy, remain largely unexplored. Our study investigated associations between these changes and cytokine profiles during pregnancy. METHODOLOGY: A cohort of pregnant Latina women in Southern California (n = 58) completed a structured questionnaire on pregnancy "mornin

Identification of odor biomarkers in irradiation injury urine based on headspace SPME-GC-MS.

PURPOSE: The threat of population exposure to ionizing radiation is increasing rapidly worldwide. Such exposure, especially at high-dose, is known to cause acute radiation syndrome (ARS). Hence, it is necessary to develop specific and sensitive biomarkers to accurately diagnose radiation injury and evaluate medical countermeasures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a model organism with a fine and sound olfactory system, was used to examine the odor of urine samples collected from irradiation-injured rats, and compared with those from un-irradiated control rats to in

Gene therapy rescues olfactory perception in a clinically relevant ciliopathy model of Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a hereditary genetic disorder that results in numerous clinical manifestations including olfactory dysfunction. Of at least 21 BBS-related genes that can carry multiple mutations, a pathogenic mutation, BBS1M390R, is the single most common mutation of clinically diagnosed BBS outcomes. While the deletion of BBS-related genes in mice can cause variable penetrance in different organ systems, the impact of the Bbs1M390R mutation in the olfactory system remains unclear. Using a clinically relevant knock-in mouse model homozygous for Bbs1M390R, we investigated the imp

Sleep-Disordered Breathing Is Associated With Impaired Odor Identification in Older U.S. Adults.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a common, underdiagnosed condition in older adults with major health consequences, including disrupted central nervous system functioning. Whether SDB may affect sensory function is unclear. We sought to address this question by comparing 2 forms of olfactory testing which measure peripheral and central olfactory processing. METHODS: We assessed SDB (survey-reported snoring frequency, nighttime apneic events, or diagnosis of sleep apnea) in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, a nationally representative sample of older U.S. adul

Olfactory interneurons in the brain of the larval sphinx moth Manduca sexta.

1. The physiology and morphology of olfactory interneurons in the brain of larval Manduca sexta were studied using intracellular recording and staining techniques. Antennal olfactory receptors were stimulated with volatile substances from plants and with pure odorants. Neurons responding to the stimuli were investigated further to reveal their response specificities, dose-response characteristics, and morphology. 2. We found no evidence of specific 'labeled-lines' among the odor-responsive interneurons, as none responded exclusively to one plant odor or pure odorant; most olfactory interneuron

Abnormal sensation during total body irradiation: a prospective observational study.

Light flash and odor during radiotherapy are well-known phenomena. Two prospective observational studies have indicated that 55% of patients observed a light flash during irradiation of the retina and 27% of patients sensed an odor during radiotherapy for the nasal cavity. A prospective observational study was performed in all patients at our hospital who received total body irradiation (TBI) between January 2019 to October 2021. Light flash and odor during TBI were examined using the same method as that used in previous studies. A total of 32 patients received TBI during the study period. The

Dysfunction of the Mesolimbic Circuit to Food Odors in Women With Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa: A fMRI Study.

Brain reward dysfunction in eating disorders has been widely reported. However, whether the neural correlates of hedonic and motivational experiences related to food cues are differentially affected in anorexia nervosa of restrictive type (ANr), bulimia nervosa (BN), and healthy control (HC) participants remains unknown. Here, 39 women (14 ANr, 13 BN, and 12 HC) underwent fMRI while smelling food or non-food odors in hunger and satiety states during liking and wanting tasks. ANr and BN patients reported less desire to eat odor-cued food and odor-cued high energy-density food (EDF), respectivel

The mysterious sense of smell: evolution, historical perspectives, and neurological disorders.

Phylogenetically, the chemical sense of smell is the oldest of all sensory modalities in terrestrial and aquatic organisms. For most non-human species in the wild, it is essential like other senses for survival because it aids nutrition, detection of environmental threats, and mating. In contrast to other senses, olfaction holds some unique properties: vertebrates, humans, and other mammals can distinguish many thousands of different odors due to genetically determined specific odorant receptors which have a lifespan of about 1 month and then are continuously replaced by neuroneogenesis in the

Genome-wide identification and expression profiling of odorant-binding proteins in the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis.

Olfaction contributes to many crucial behaviors in insects, such as foraging, locating hosts, mating, and avoiding predators. In the first step of the olfaction process in insects, odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) bind with the odorants and transport hydrophobic odorants. OBPs are also believed to accelerate the termination of the odorant response. The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is one of the most destructive fruit-eating pests, causing enormous economic losses to the fruit and vegetable industry worldwide. However, information relating to the number, diversity, and expression pat
