BACKGROUND: Body size in early life is inversely associated with adult breast cancer (BC) risk, but it is unclear whether the associations differ by tumor characteristics.
METHODS: In a pooled analysis of two Swedish population-based studies consisting of 6731 invasive BC cases and 28,705 age-matched cancer-free controls, we examined the associations between body size in early life and BC risk. Self-reported body sizes at ages 7 and 18 years were collected by a validated nine-level pictogram (aggregated into three categories: small, medium and large). Odds ratios (OR) and corresponding 95% co

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is controversial whether small size recipient is associated with adverse outcome in liver transplantation. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of pediatric liver transplantation according to body weight of recipients.
METHODS: Liver transplant recipients (age <18years, from 1993 to 2011) were studied retrospectively. They were categorized according to the body size at the time of transplantation (A: <6kg; B: between 6kg to 10kg; C: >10kg).
RESULTS: A total of 113 patients (83 LDLTs and 30 DDLTs) were studied. Thirteen (11.5%) belonged to group A, 56 (49.6%) be

Bone geometry plays a prominent role in bone strength. Cross-sectional studies have shown that advancing age is associated with increasing diameter of long bones, related to both periostal apposition and endosteal resorption. However, there are few data provided by prospective studies, especially concerning the changes in vertebral body dimensions. The objective of this prospective study was to measure the changes occurring in the vertebral body size of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Three-year data from placebo groups of the SOTI and TROPOS trials, performed in women with postmenopau

A number of wildlife pathogens are generalist and can affect different host species characterized by a wide range of body sizes. In this work we analyze the role of allometric scaling of host vital and epidemiological rates in a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected (SEI) model. Our analysis shows that the transmission coefficient threshold for the disease to establish in the population scales allometrically (exponent = 0.45) with host size as well as the threshold at which limit cycles occur. In contrast, the threshold of the basic reproduction number for sustained oscillations to occur is independent

Organisms that change sex during their lifetime use a variety of strategies--they may be female first, male first or even repetitive sex changers. Natural selection should favour those individuals that change sex at a time when it increases their reproductive value. Allsop and West claim that the relative timing of sex change is invariant across all animals, with individuals changing sex at 72% of their maximum body size, and infer that natural selection for sex change must therefore be fundamentally similar across animals. Here we explain why we believe that Allsop and West's claims are not s

AIMS: To determine the body size of extremely low birth weight (ELBW, birth weight 500-999 g) subjects in early adulthood.
METHODS: Cohort study examining the height and weight of 42 ELBW survivors free of cerebral palsy between birth and 20 years of age. Weight and height measurements were converted to Z (SD) scores.
RESULTS: At birth the subjects had weight Z scores substantially below zero (mean birth weight Z score -0.90, 95% CI -1.25 to -0.54), and had been lighter than average at ages 2, 5, and 8 years. However, by 14, and again at 20 years of age their weight Z scores were not signifi

Body mass can be estimated from measures of skeletal frame size (stature and bi-iliac (maximum pelvic) breadth) fairly accurately in modern human populations. However, it is not clear whether such a technique will lead to systematic biases in body mass estimation when applied to earlier hominins. Here the stature/bi-iliac method is tested, using data available for modern Olympic and Olympic-caliber athletes, with the rationale that these individuals may be more representative of the general physique and degree of physical conditioning characteristic of earlier populations. The average percent

PURPOSE: To determine whether differences in vertebral bone densities or sizes account for gender differences in skeletal mass during growth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative computed tomography (CT) was used to measure the densities of cortical and cancellous bone and dimensions of the lumbar vertebral bodies in 196 healthy children and adolescents, ages 4-20 years.
RESULTS: Neither cancellous nor cortical bone densities differed between boys and girls with age or level of sexual development. In contrast, the cross-sectional areas of the vertebral bodies were greater in boys than girls t

Many long-term adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy are known. Increasingly, adverse effects in the grandchild after grandmaternal smoking during pregnancy are reported. We explored this in a birth cohort of 24,000 grandmother-mother-child triads identified from the Finnish Medical Birth Register in 1991-2016. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between any smoking during pregnancy by both grandmother and mother, or only grandmother or mother on adverse birth outcomes. No smoking by neither grandmother nor mother was used as the reference. As endpoints, pret

Although evidence has been mounting that obesity may be related to the increased incidence of oesophageal and gastric cardia malignancies, these reports (mainly case-control studies) have relied on imperfect measures of obesity such as body mass index (BMI), and generally have not clearly distinguished between anatomical subsites within the oesophagus and stomach. In a prospective study of people aged 27-75 years, we directly measured fat mass and fat-free mass (using bioelectrical impedance analysis), height, weight and waist and hip circumferences. Among 41,295 people followed on average for

Early age at menarche and tallness are associated with increased risk for breast cancer, and emerging evidence suggests that body size at birth also is positively associated with breast cancer risk in adulthood. We have explored whether this effect of birth size could be mediated by influencing age at menarche or body height during adolescence. Information on age at menarche and adolescent height among 3,343 Norwegian girls 13 to 19 years of age, born at term and whose mothers had no history of gestational disease was individually linked to information on birth weight and length recorded in th

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is regarded as the gold standard for clinical assessment of the aorta, but normal dimensions are usually referenced to echocardiographic and computed tomography data and no large CMR normal reference range exists. As a result we aimed to 1) produce a normal CMR reference range of aortic diameters and 2) investigate the relationship between regional aortic size and body surface area (BSA) in a large group of healthy subjects with no vascular risk factors.
METHODS: 447 subjects (208 male, aged 19-70 years) without identifiable cardiac risk fac

The video distortion method on a life-size screen is a new method for studying eating disordered patients' estimations of their own body width. Testing this method in female patients (53 with anorexia nervosa, 38 with bulimia nervosa) and 36 normal females, yielded high to very high reliability scores (consistency and test-retest stability). A careful analysis of the 'just noticeable difference' showed that a 5% deviation from the undistorted image should be considered as within the range of accuracy. Taking this into account, anorectic patients appear to score below, above, as well as within

BACKGROUND: Several new mosquito control strategies will involve the release of laboratory reared males which will be required to compete with wild males for mates. Currently, the determinants of male mating success remain unclear. The presence of convergence between male and female harmonic flight tone frequencies during a mating attempt have been found to increase male mating success in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Size has also been implicated as a factor in male mating success. Here, we investigated the relationships among body size, harmonic convergence signalling, and mating

Maternal effects can form an important source of variation in offspring fitness and have important evolutionary and ecological consequences. To explore genetic control for body size of newborn offspring, the present study examined maternal brood size and offspring body size in 14 strains and performed cross experiments in an ovoviviparous fish, guppy. Correlation analyses among the strains indicated that the strains with larger brood size have smaller offspring body size. Diallel and reciprocal crosses among four strains revealed a large maternal, but no paternal, contribution to offspring bod

BACKGROUND: Body size emerges from the interplay of genetic programs and early-life environments, but the immediate executors of growth are metabolic factors.
CONTENT: This review reframes stature as a readout of fuel allocation and cellular bioenergetics. We synthesize how endocrine drivers-Growth hormone (GH)/Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, thyroid hormone, and glucocorticoids-interface with energy-sensing pathways and hepatokines to couple nutrient availability with chondrocyte matrix production, muscle protein synthesis, and bone accrual. GH promotes lipolysis and protein sparing, whi

BACKGROUND: Childhood body mass index (BMI) trajectories, BMI, height, and birth weight were investigated in relation to biliary tract cancer (BTC) risk in this population-based cohort study.
METHODS: The study included 172,113 males and 168,503 females born between 1930 and 1996 from the Copenhagen School Health Records Register. Heights and weights measured at ages 6-15 years identified five sex-specific BMI trajectories. BMI and height were analyzed as z scores; overweight was defined via US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria. Sex-specific hazard ratios (HRs) were estimate

BACKGROUND: Body size estimation-the ability to judge the size and shape of one's own body-is a key perceptual component of body image. However, its neural basis, and the basis for inter-individual differences in accuracy, remain poorly understood, partly due to limitations in existing assessment tools.
METHODS: We developed Somatomap 3D, an interactive fMRI-compatible task allowing participants to manipulate a rotatable 3D avatar by adjusting the size and shape of 26 individual body parts to match their perceived body. Twenty-eight healthy male and female adults completed the task during fMR
