Thermoregulation is a vital function of the autonomic nervous system in response to cold and heat stress. Thermoregulatory physiology sustains health by keeping body core temperature within a degree or two of 37°C, which enables normal cellular function. Heat production and dissipation are dependent on a coordinated set of autonomic responses. The clinical detection of thermoregulatory impairment provides important diagnostic and localizing information in the evaluation of disorders that impair thermoregulatory pathways, including autonomic neuropathies and ganglionopathies. Failure of neural

KEY POINTS: The costs associated with immune and thermal responses may exceed the benefits to the host during severe inflammation. In this case, regulated hypothermia instead of fever can occur in rodents as a beneficial strategy to conserve energy for vital functions with consequent tissue protection and hypoxia prevention. We tested the hypothesis that this phenomenon is not exclusive to mammals, but extends to the other endothermic group, birds. A decrease in metabolic rate without any failure in mitochondrial respiration, nor oxygen delivery, is the main evidence supporting the regulated n

Torpor in birds is considered to be far less common than in mammals. This is particularly true for passerine birds for which knowledge of torpor expression is scarce, although almost all are small, have high energy expenditure and could profit energetically from using torpor. To assess whether the extent and diversity of avian and especially passerine torpor expression and heterothermy may be currently underestimated because of limited long-term data on free-ranging birds, core body temperature fluctuations were quantified over ~ 4.3 months in a medium-sized honeyeater, the noisy miner (Manori

Brain temperature, regulated by the balance between blood circulation and metabolic heat generation, is an important parameter related to neural activity, cerebral hemodynamics, and neuroinflammation. A key challenge for integrating brain temperature into clinical practice is the lack of reliable and non-invasive brain thermometry. The recognized importance of brain temperature and thermoregulation in both health and disease, combined with limited availability of experimental methods, has motivated the development of computational thermal models using bioheat equations to predict brain tempera

No previous studies have investigated the effect of lower body compression garments (CG) on running performance in the heat. This study tested the hypothesis that CG would negatively affect running performance in the heat by comparing CG and non-CG conditions for running performance and physiological responses in hot and cold conditions. Ten male recreational runners (29.0 ± 10.0 years, [Formula: see text]max: 58.7 ± 2.7 ml kg(-1) min(-1)) performed four treadmill tests consisting of 20-min running at first ventilatory threshold followed by a run to exhaustion at [Formula: see text]max velocit

AbstractNear-infrared radiation, although invisible to the human eye, accounts for nearly half the solar energy that reaches the Earth's surface. Given this, it is reasonable to investigate whether this type of radiation influences thermoregulation in ectothermic animals, as some recent studies suggest. In this study, I examined the daily activity pattern of a beetle species from the Geotrupidae family (Geotrupes stercorarius), alongside measurements of the solar radiation spectrum in the environmental conditions where this species is typically found. To assess thermal responses, both elytra a

The study was aimed at evaluating the concentration of serum thyroid hormones and diurnal trends in rectal and body surface temperatures in neonatal buck-kids and doelings. Rectal and body surface (eye, head and trunk) temperatures as well as the differences between rectal and surface (DBRS) temperatures were determined in 39 kids, having equal number of Red Sokoto, Sahel and West African Dwarf (WAD) goats during daytime nadir (07:00 h) and zenith (13:00 h) in ambient temperatures. All variables and blood samples were obtained from birth to Day 20, post-natal. Results revealed significantly (P

This review discusses human thermoregulation during exercise and the measurement of body temperature in clinical and exercise settings. The thermoregulatory mechanisms play important roles in maintaining physiological homeostasis during rest and physical exercise. Physical exertion poses a challenge to thermoregulation by causing a substantial increase in metabolic heat production. However, within a non-thermolytic range, the thermoregulatory mechanisms are capable of adapting to sustain physiological functions under these conditions. The central nervous system may also rely on hyperthermia to

This project tested the hypothesis that burn survivors can perform mild/moderate-intensity exercise in temperate and hot environments without excessive elevations in core body temperature. Burn survivors with low (23 ± 5%TBSA; N = 11), moderate (40 ± 5%TBSA; N = 9), and high (60 ± 8%TBSA; N = 9) burn injuries performed 60 minutes of cycle ergometry exercise (72 ± 15 watts) in a 25°C and 23% relative humidity environment (ie, temperate) and in a 40°C and 21% relative humidity environment (ie, hot). Absolute gastrointestinal temperatures (TGI) and changes in TGI (ΔTGI) were obtained. Participant

Synthetic progestins in oral contraceptives are thought to blunt heat dissipation by reducing skin blood flow and sweating. However, whether progestin-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs) modulate heat loss during exercise-heat stress is unknown. We used direct calorimetry to measure whole-body total (dry + evaporative) heat loss in young, physically active women (mean (SD); aged 24 (4) years, V ̇ O 2 peak ${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{2}}}{\mathrm{peak}}}}$ 39.3 (5.3) ml/kg/min) with (IUD; n = 19) and without (Control; n = 17) IUDs in the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual

Managing temperature is an important part of post-cardiac arrest care. Fever or hyperthermia during the first few days after cardiac arrest is associated with worse outcomes in many studies. Clinical data have not determined any target temperature or duration of temperature management that clearly improves patient outcomes. Current guidelines and recent reviews recommend controlling temperature to prevent hyperthermia. Higher temperatures can lead to secondary brain injury by increasing seizures, brain edema and metabolic demand. Some data suggest that targeting temperature below normal could

The genesis of the present research paper is to develop a revised exact analytical solution of thermal profile of 1-D Pennes' bioheat equation (PBHE) for living tissues influenced in thermal therapeutic treatments. In order to illustrate the temperature distribution in living tissue both Fourier and non-Fourier model of 1-D PBHE has been solved by 'Separation of variables' technique. Till date most of the research works have been carried out with the constant initial steady temperature of tissue which is not at all relevant for the biological body due to its nonhomogeneous living cells. There

Therapeutic hypothermia may be useful in various circumstances including stroke. However, core body temperature is normally tightly regulated. Even mild hypothermia in conscious subjects thus provokes vigorous thermoregulatory defenses which are potentially harmful in fragile patients. Furthermore, thermoregulatory responses are effective, which reduces the rate at which hypothermia can be induced. Drugs are thus often given to blunt normal thermoregulatory defenses. General anesthetics profoundly impair thermoregulatory control, but prolonged general anesthesia is rarely practical or appropri

Over the past decades, increasing environmental temperatures have been identified as one of the causes of major insect population declines and biodiversity loss. However, it is unclear how these rising temperatures affect endoheterothermic insects, like bumblebees, that have evolved thermoregulatory capacities to exploit cold and temperate habitats. To investigate this, we measured head, thoracic, and abdominal temperature of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) workers across a range of temperatures (24 °C-32 °C) during three distinct behaviors. In resting bumblebees, the head, abdomen, and thorax c

Human body core temperature is tightly regulated within approximately 37 °C. Global near surface temperature has increased by over 1.2 °C between 1850 and 2020. In light of the challenge this poses to human thermoregulation, the present perspective article sought to provide an overview on the effects of varying ambient and body temperature on cognitive, affective, and behavioural domains of functioning. To this end, an overview of observational and experimental studies in healthy individuals and individuals with mental disorders was provided. Within body core temperature at approximately 37 °C

AbstractFever and hypothermia are well-characterized components of systemic inflammation. However, our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying such changes in body temperature is largely limited to rodent models and other mammalian species. In mammals, high dosages of an inflammatory agent (e.g., lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) typically leads to hypothermia (decrease in body temperature below normothermic levels), which is largely driven by a reduction in thermogenesis and not changes in peripheral vasomotion (i.e., changes in blood vessel tone). In birds, however, hypothermia occurs frequently, eve

Mountain accident casualties are often exposed to cold and windy weather. This may induce post-traumatic hypothermia which increases mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of warming systems to compensate for the victim's estimated heat loss in a simulated mountain rescue operation. We used thermal manikins and developed a thermodynamic model of a virtual patient. Manikins were placed on a mountain rescue stretcher and exposed to wind chill indices of 0 °C and - 20 °C in a climatic chamber. We calculated the heat balance for two simulated clinical scenarios with both a shiv

Butterflies regulate their internal thoracic temperature in order to optimize performance activities (e.g. flight, foraging). Previous research has shown that butterfly wings, particularly the innermost portions, play a role in thermoregulation. We investigated to see whether a lightly colored wing band would alter the thermal properties of the banded peacock butterfly (Anartia fatima) with two within subject experiments in a laboratory setting: (1) band color manipulation in which euthanized individuals were heated to thermal equilibrium with the band unaltered and then again with the wing da

We examined adrenergic controlled cutaneous blood flow and temperature regulation in Prader-Willi syndrome. A body mass index was calculated for each participant. Thermal and laser Doppler finger probes were applied for continuous simultaneous surface temperature and capillary blood flow recording. Analysis with respect to group, age, body mass index, and genetic cause were performed. There were 32 patients (mean = 17.5 years of age) and five control subjects (mean = 15.6 years of age). There were no significant differences in mean ages or sex between groups. There was no significant differenc

We aimed to compare rectal temperature (Trec) and gastro-intestinal temperature (TGI) during passive heating and subsequent recovery with and without ice slurry ingestion. Twelve males (age: 25 ± 4 years, body mass index: 25.7 ± 2.5 kg m-2) were immersed in hot water on two occasions (Trec elevation: 1.82 ± 0.08°C). In the subsequent 60-min recovery in ambient conditions, participants ingested either 6.8 g kg-1 of ice slurry (-0.6°C, ICE) or control drink (37°C, CON). During passive heating, Trec was lower than TGI (P < 0.001), in the recovery, Trec was higher than TGI (P < 0.001). During pass
