We analysed the histological findings in 1146 osteoarthritic femoral heads which would have been considered suitable for bone-bank donation to determine whether pathological lesions, other than osteoarthritis, were present. We found that 91 femoral heads (8%) showed evidence of disease. The most common conditions noted were chondrocalcinosis (63 cases), avascular necrosis (13), osteomas (6) and malignant tumours (one case of low-grade chondrosarcoma and two of well-differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma). There were two with metabolic bone disease (Paget's disease and hyperparathyroid bone diseas

Due to the growing number of young patients at risk of germ cell loss, there is a need to preserve spermatogonial stem cells for patients who are not able to bank spermatozoa. Worldwide, more and more clinics are implementing testicular tissue (TT) banking programs, making it a novel, yet indispensable, discipline in the field of fertility preservation. Previously, TT cryopreservation was predominantly offered to young cancer patients before starting gonadotoxic chemo- or radiotherapy. Nowadays, most centers also bank TT from patients with non-malignant conditions who need gonadotoxic conditio

BACKGROUND: Allograft donations are not uncommonly found to be contaminated. The issue of contaminated donations from live donors at the time of surgery, and the significance of this to the patient in terms of subsequent sepsis of the arthroplasty, were examined.
METHODS: The donations of femoral heads to the Queensland Bone Bank over a 9-year period were reviewed, and the incidence and bacteriology of contamination were detailed. Clinical outcomes were determined for donors who had positive cultures at the time of retrieval and they were compared with those of culture-negative donors.

The pool of HLA-A, B and C-typed blood donors in Hannover for cell-donation increased from 2162 in 1988 to 2406 in 1989. 1032 blood donors declared their readiness to donate thrombocytes; 667 would like to donate bone marrow, 453 of them have undergone complete HLA-A, B, C and DR-typing. Until August 31, 1989 we looked in our data bank for an HLA-identical bone marrow donor for 84 patients from other transplantation centers and for 19 patients who are being looked after in Hannover and in national and international data banks.

The demand for organ transplantations greatly exceeds the number of organ donors (OD) and it is likely that this discrepancy will continue. There is a continuously growing demand for biostatic allogenic bone transplantation mostly for orthopedic reconstructions. The bone material is predominantly harvested during postmortem examinations in forensic medicine departments. The collected amounts are not enough so the material need to be acquired from other sources. Bone collecting from OD seems to be the optimal solution. Between January 2000 and December 2005, 1,883 out of 2,601 organ donors fulf

Video recording of microscopic preparations, digitalization and storage, transmission by a specialized telephone network are revolutionizing microscopic diagnosis procedures. Adjustment of standardization of medical diagnosis, based on internationally recognized classifications and their computerized coding are fundamental to this process (ADICAP coding system). We are evaluating telediagnosis procedure to test their relevance in practical hematology. Taking into account clinical and biological informations is necessary to deal with difficult cases, in using in addition to microscopic observat

Tissue banking in Scotland has developed significantly over the past 20 years or so. The range of issues procured has increased and so have their numbers. Initially, bone from live donors was the only tissue banked; later, tissues from multiorgan donors were procured; this was finally followed by the collection of tissues from donors following cardiac death. Bones, tendons, heart valves and skin are the main tissue types collected, stored and issued for clinical use. Much of our activity is based on identification of donors in two major accident and emergency departments followed by retrievals

AIM: Due to new medical knowledge and legal restrictions, it is increasingly difficult to run a traditional allogenic bone bank so that alternative bone substitutes and methods of processing are being sought worldwide.
METHOD: In a prospective clinical study, the biological efficacy of thermodisinfected and then cryopreserved allogenic bank bone was investigated in 19 acetabular revisions in 18 patients. Simultaneously a newly developed titanium reconstruction ring was used. Any revision was regarded as an end point and the follow-up with radiological and clinical results were recorded.

Unrelated cord blood transplantation has been used to treat patients with malignant and non-malignant hematopoietic disorders for whom an HLA-compatible hematopoietic stem cell donor is not available. The establishment of cord blood banks worldwide, the increased number of cord blood units frozen, and the shorter time to find a donor, have made it possible to use this source of hematopoietic stem cells to treat more than 2,500 patients. The Eurocord registry was established to study the clinical results of cord blood transplantation and to compare the outcomes of unrelated transplants using ei

The tissue bank "Rosa Guerzoni Chambergo" (RGCTB) located at the Child's Health Institute was inaugurated in 1996, with the financial and technical support of the IAEA program on radiation and tissue banking. Since 1998, the biological bandage of fresh and lyophilised pigskin, amnion and bone tissue is processed routinely in this bank. In all cases, the tissue is sterilised with the use of Cobalt-60 radiation, process carried out at the Laboratories of Irradiation of the Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN). The tissue bank in the Child's Health Institute helped to save lives in an acci

BACKGROUND: Pediatric calvarial reconstruction is challenging because of the unique anatomical and growth considerations in this population. Comparative studies evaluating current cranioplasty materials are lacking. This review addresses the knowledge gap in pediatric cranioplasty outcomes with emphasis on current materials used.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Outcome data comparing fresh bone, banked bone, titanium, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polyetheretherketone were abstracted.

Despite long-standing interest by orthopedic surgeons in the replacement of diseased segments of the spine with grafts from other individuals, progress in this direction does not extend beyond the last two decades. One of the reasons for a relatively slow rate of progress in these endeavors was the lack of individuals and organizations devoted to safely obtaining and preparing bone allografts for routine clinical transplantation. In an effort to overcome this difficulty, a Tissue Bank was established at the University of Miami-Jackson Medical Center. The service offered by this bank provided a

The Swiss Bone Marrow Donor Registry was established 1988 as a project of Swiss Transplant. Up to the end of 1997, 13,500 unrelated volunteer donors have been added to the central registry in Bern in cooperation with the regional transfusion centers of Switzerland. During this period, the registry responded to over 15,000 international search requests. 67 matching Swiss donors were found for patients all over the world. On the other hand, 77 Swiss patients received unrelated bone marrow transplantation from international donors. In 1997, 24 donors were selected from the Swiss registry and 21 b

Processed and radiation sterilized allograft tissues that can be banked for use on demand are a precious therapeutic resource for the repair or reconstruction of damaged or injured tissues. Skin dressings or skin substitutes like allograft skin, amniotic membrane and bioengineered skin can be used for the treatment of thermal burns and radiation induced skin injuries. Bone grafts can be employed for repairing fracture defects, filling in destroyed regions of bone, and treatment of spinal and joint injuries. A nuclear scenario would result in a large number of casualties due to the heat, blast

SUMMARY: The facial skeleton is foundational for facial aesthetics. The authors describe an alternative technique for cosmetic chin augmentation that does not require alloplastic implants, osseous genioplasty, or autologous bone harvesting. In this new and innovative technique for chin augmentation, tissue bank allograft cancellous bone chips serve as a scaffold for bony ingrowth. The use of bone chips allows for aesthetic contouring with small adjustments in the facial skeleton. The objective of this article is to provide further information on this novel technique and demonstrate the efficac

Sufficient stability in comminuted fractures of the lower limb, in correcting bone axis or in hip surgery can often be achieved only by adjunctive transplantation of cancellous bone. The homologous cancellous bones is cut to chips out of extracted femoral heads and frozen in a bone bank at -30 degrees C. The homologous material is available whether or not the patient himself has enough autologous spongiosa. Establishing a bone bank in a small hospital can be done with small effort and works well, as experience shows. Immunological phenomena do not cause any problems although they are responsib

BACKGROUND: The induced-membrane technique was initially described by Masquelet as an effective treatment for large bone defects, especially those caused by infection. Here, we report a case of chronic osteomyelitis of the radius associated with a 9 cm bone defect, which was filled with a large allogeneic cortical bone graft from a bone bank. Complete bony union was achieved after 14 months of follow-up. Previous studies have used autogenous bone as the primary bone source for the Masquelet technique; in our case, the exclusive use of allografts is as successful as the use of autologous bone g

National Blood Service (NBS) Tissue Services (TS) operates living donor and deceased donor tissue banking programmes. The living bone donor programme operates in collaboration with 91 orthopaedic departments across the country and collects bone donations, in the form of surgically removed femoral heads (FHs), from over 5,000 patients per annum undergoing total hip replacement. Bone donated via the living programme constitutes approximately 55% of the total bone donated to NBS. Non-NBS tissue banks, primarily in hospital orthopaedic departments, also bank donated bone for the UK. A survey of in

INTRODUCTION: Secondary bone grafting consists in a routine procedure on the treatment of patients with alveolar cleft. Usually, it is performed by the end of the mixed dentition, when the permanent canine is erupting, with autogenous cancellous bone from the iliac crest.
OBJECTIVE: The present article discusses the alternative of autogenous bone grafting with allogeneic bone, obtained from human bone bank, illustrating the result with the report of a clinical case of left unilateral alveolar cleft.

The banking of tissues such bone and skin began in India in the 1980s and 1990s. Although eye banking started in 1945 there was little progress in this field for the next five decades. As part of the IAEA/RCA program to use ionising radiation for the sterilisation of biological tissues in Asia and the Pacific Region, the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in 1986 decided to set up a tissue bank in Mumbai funded by the Government of India. The TMH Tissue Bank became operational in January 1988, and stands as a pioneering effort in the country to provide safe, clinically useful and cost-effective huma
