OBJECTIVES: We aimed to report radiological and clinical features of single bone intramedullary fixation of the radius in pediatric both bone forearm fractures using straight stainless steel Kirschner (K) wire.
METHODS: Fifty-eight children (42 boys and 16 girls) referred to our hospital with both bone diaphyseal forearm fractures were operated on by using the single bone rigid K-wire intramedullary fixation and mini-open technique. The mean follow-up time was 8.9 months (6-12).
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 7.4 years (4-12). More than 2/3 of the fractures were in the right hand.

Annales de chirurgie de la main et du membre superieur : organe officiel des societes de chirurgie de la main = Annals of hand and upper limb surgery1991fre
The authors present a short series of 30 displaced fractures of the neck of the fifth metacarpal. All fractures were treated by K-wire nailing according to the method described by Fourcher in 1976. The good results confirm the advantages of this technique, allowing early mobilization and rehabilitation. The poor results are due to faults in the use of the method, and the authors emphasize these technical errors.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF) is well-known complication in cementless hip arthroplasty (HA), especially in the elderly with osteoporosis. To prevent intraoperative PFFs during HA, prophylactic cerclage wiring on the calcar area during femoral broaching and implant insertion is recommended. However, biomechanical data on the benefits of cerclage wiring in osteoporotic bone during impaction are limited and controversial. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of prophylactic double-looped cerclage wiring (PDLCW) during femoral broaching in the osteoporotic bone model with a

BACKGROUND: The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured bone among the carpal bones seen in orthopedic practice. The majority have good favorable prognosis, but some develop nonunion of fracture despite optimal treatment, which can lead to further complications if left untreated. It is recommended that displaced scaphoid nonunions (SNUs) should be reduced and fixed to prevent degenerative changes from occurring, even if they are asymptomatic. Many treatments have been described, from a percutaneous fixation with a k-wire or screw to open reduction and internal fixation with or without bone gra

Vascularized bone grafts have shown favorable outcomes in Kienböck's disease, preventing the progression of lunate collapse and avascular necrosis. Here we describe our experience using a 4+5 extensor compartmental artery (ECA) vascularized bone graft combined with K-wire fixation. Between September 2010 and June 2013, 9 patients with Lichtman stage II-IIIA disease underwent arthroscopy prior to 4+5 ECA graft placement combined with temporary fixation (scaphocapitate and triquetrum-capitate joints). The average follow-up was 69 months (range, 51-92 months). Changes in pain, range of motion, gr

This study was performed to determine whether pure cancellous bone graft and Kirschner (K-) wire fixation were sufficient to achieve bony union and restore alignment in scaphoid nonunion. A total of 65 patients who underwent cancellous bone graft and K-wire fixation were included in this study. The series included 61 men and four women with a mean age of 34 years (15 to 72) and mean delay to surgery of 28.7 months (3 to 240). The patients were divided into an unstable group (A) and stable group (B) depending on the pre-operative radiographs. Unstable nonunion was defined as a lateral intrascap

Background Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are commonly treated with percutaneous K-wire or plate fixation. The relative efficacy and stability of these methods, particularly in osteoporotic patients and in cases involving both distal radius and ulna fractures, remain subjects of clinical debate. Objective This study aims to compare the outcomes of percutaneous K-wire fixation versus plate fixation in patients with distal end radius fractures, focusing on postoperative stability in osteoporotic conditions and both-bone distal end fractures. Methods A total of 50 patients were retrospectively an

Orthodontic tooth movement results from alveolar bone remodeling induced by mechanical loads applied to the teeth over extended periods during the unloading phase of arch wires. In clinical practice, orthodontic arch wires are inserted into bracket slots without precise knowledge of the forces transmitted to individual teeth. Excessive loads may lead to undesirable side effects, whereas insufficient forces may fail to initiate bone remodeling and tooth movement. This study aims to develop a 3D numerical approach based on finite element method to simulate orthodontic tooth movement during the a

PURPOSE: Cerclage wiring is a well-known supplemental fixation technique that can be used in many types of fractures. With the tendency toward minimally invasive approaches in the management of periprosthetic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) fractures, and with absence of a dedicated study that reports the results of cerclage wiring in TKA fractures in particular, the aim of this retrospective study is to report the outcomes of supplementary cerclage wiring using simple Luque wires in fractures of distal femur associated with TKA.
METHOD: Eighteen cases, with a mean age of 77.2 years had complet

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to compare the biomechanical stability of distal radius fracture fixation with 2 new implants, the DNP (Hand Innovations LLC, Miami, FL), a dorsal locked hybrid of nail and plate, and the XSCREW (Zimmer, Freiburg, Germany), an implant combining a cannulated screw and K-wires, in a cadaver bone distal radius fracture model.
METHODS: Eight pairs of fresh-frozen cadaver radii were used. To simulate an extra-articular distal radius fracture, a 5-mm volar open wedge osteotomy was made. Axial loads of 10 to 100 N and torque loads of -1.5 to 1.5 Nm were applied

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign but locally aggressive lesion, rarely affecting the carpus (<2% of hand GCTs), and is associated with recurrence rates up to 87%. Management of carpal GCT is challenging due to the limited bone volume, risk of damage to articular cartilage, and the need to preserve wrist function.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old male presented with recurrent GCT of his left wrist 1 year after curettage and bone grafting. He had painful swelling, restricted motion, and an expansile lesion involving the distal carpal row and bases of the 2nd-4th metacarpals.

BACKGROUND: Femoral shaft fractures caused by high energy trauma can be very challenging due to the large variability in fracture morphology and poor functional outcomes. Displaced major fragments of femoral shaft fractures are difficult to manage after closed reduction and intramedullary nailing (IMN). The minimally invasive cerclage wiring (CW) procedure has become an optimal tool for major fragment resetting and stabilization after IMN. However, arguments continue for the potential risk of arterial injury, blood supply disruption, and delayed bone union or non-union with the CW procedure. T

This case report describes the rare occurrence of a flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) avulsion of the left little finger in association with a pathological fracture of an enchondroma. The enchondroma was treated by simple curettage without bone graft. The FDP tendon was re-attached to the distal phalanx using the pull-out technique with a non-absorbable polyethylene suture. We recommend simple curettage without bone grafting in cases of enchondroma of the distal phalanx in which the bone defect is small.

BACKGROUND: Many recommend to operate scaphoid pseudarthroses with wedge grafts and screw fixation. These are difficult operations. We have employed a simpler procedure and wished to review our results with regard to healing and long-term clinical results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 39 unselected scaphoid pseudarthroses which had been operated with Kirschner-wire fixation and bone chip transplantation 10 (3.5-12) years previously. Postoperative cast treatment was 15 (11-30) weeks.
RESULTS: Four pseudarthroses failed to unite, one of which was after a trans-scaphoid perilunar dislocati

OBJECTIVE: The patellar inferior pole fracture is typically comminuted. Hence, achieving firm fixation and early activity is highly challenging. In this article, we employed the method of wire cerclage through a generated bone hole to reduce the fracture. Our objective was to compare the clinical efficacy of patellar concentrator alone with a combination of cerclage and patellar concentrator in the treatment of patellar inferior pole fracture.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients with patellar inferior pole fractures, who underwent patellar concentrator fixation only (the

Background: The treatment of complex transverse olecranon fractures (CTOFs), also known as olecranon fractures with the impacted articular fragments (IAF), was reported recently. We fix IAFs with absorbable pins supported by autologous bone graft followed by olecranon fracture fixation. We have used the arc centre distance (ACD) method to evaluate the congruency of this concentric hinge joint. The aim of this study is to present the outcomes of this fixation technique and evaluate the value of the ACD method. Methods: We reviewed 26 cases of CTOF treated at our hospital from 2014 to 2020.
