Virtually Connected: Do Shared Novel Activities in Virtual Reality Enhance Self-Expansion and Relationship Quality?

According to self-expansion theory, sharing novel experiences with a romantic partner can help prevent boredom and maintain relationship quality. However, in today's globalized modern world, partners spend less time together and are more likely to live apart than in previous generations, limiting opportunities for shared novel experiences. In two in-lab experiments, we tested whether shared novel activities in virtual reality (VR) could facilitate self-expansion, reduce boredom, and enhance relationship quality. In Study 1, couples (N = 183) engaged in a shared novel and exciting activity in e

Psychological flexibility and emotional trajectories during a semi-high-stakes mathematics exam: Integrating acceptance and commitment therapy with control-value theory.

BACKGROUND: Exams are a common source of emotions in adolescence, requiring regulation for performance and well-being. Psychological flexibility (PF), the ability to stay open to difficult thoughts and feelings while pursuing meaningful goals, and psychological inflexibility (PI), involving avoidance and self-criticism, represent adaptive and maladaptive regulation styles that remain understudied in adolescence. AIMS: We examined whether PF/PI is associated with adolescents' emotional trajectories during a semi-high-stakes mathematics examination and whether they differ by gender or mathemati

The impact of emotions on body-Focused repetitive behaviors: evidence from a non-treatment-seeking sample.

UNLABELLED: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are repetitive, injurious, and non-functional habits that cause significant distress or impairment, including hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting. The emotion regulation (ER) model suggests that BFRBs are triggered by negative emotions and reinforced by alleviation of unpleasant affect. The frustrated action (FA) model suggests that BFRBs are triggered by and alleviate impatience, boredom, frustration, and dissatisfaction. Individuals with BFRBs are hypothesized to be particularly susceptible to these emotions because they demonstra

University physical education teacher leadership behaviors and college students' learning outcomes: the mediating roles of basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration.

INTRODUCTION: Grounded in the Multidimensional Model of Leadership (MML) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study examines how physical education (PE) teacher leadership behaviors shape college students' learning experiences, with a particular focus on the mediating mechanisms of basic psychological need satisfaction and need frustration. METHODS: Data were collected via questionnaires from 504 undergraduate students enrolled in compulsory PE courses across several Chinese universities. Students' perceived leadership behaviors of PE instructors, basic psychological need satisfaction an

Bored and spoiling for a flight: capabilities lost and found in lockdown.

Human beings are dynamic; our innate faculties beg to engage in activities. To achieve fullness and human dignity, people "convert" personal capabilities into active "functionings," Amartya Sen explains. This means that staying still is not a normal state. It can feel like punishment. Forced inactivity will generate resentment, resistance, and boredom that can fester until pent-up energy explodes violently, or implodes in depression. Boredom defaults on capabilities and resources in many cases. In other cases, stillness is a gift. It can stimulate the imagination to fill in emptiness with memo

Teacher autonomy support and music learning engagement: conditional associations of self-efficacy and discrete achievement emotions among university music students.

OBJECTIVE: University music learning requires sustained engagement under demanding instructional and practice conditions. This study examined whether perceived teacher autonomy support, music learning self-efficacy, and discrete achievement emotions showed distinguishable associations with multidimensional engagement when considered simultaneously among Chinese undergraduate music students. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 500 undergraduate music students enrolled at three universities in southern China. Participants reported on one current core music course and its pr

Writing self-efficacy, achievement emotions, and engagement among Chinese EFL learners: a variable- and person-centered investigation based on control-value theory.

Drawing on the Control-Value Theory (CVT), this study adopts a dual-analytical approach to investigate the interplay of writing self-efficacy, emotions (enjoyment, anxiety, boredom), and engagement among 1,879 Chinese EFL learners. The variable-centered analysis identified writing self-efficacy as a key correlate of both behavioral and cognitive engagement, showing significant direct associations with engagement as well as indirect associations through the differentiated mediating roles of the three emotions. Notably, boredom emerged as the emotional correlate of behavioral engagement, whereas

The Relationship Between Technology Use and Problem Technology Use and Potential Psychosocial Mechanisms: Population-Based Telephone Survey in Community Adults During COVID-19.

Background: Although digital technology enables people to stay connected during COVID-19, protracted periods of isolation, crisis-induced stress, and technology-based activity may intensify problem technology use (PTU), such as social media addiction (SMA) and Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Objective: This study aimed to characterize the patterns and levels of SMA and IGD during COVID-19 in the general population of Hong Kong. We also tested the associations between prolonged use of social media/Internet games and SMA/IGD and the mediation effects of psychosocial statuses (i.e., loneliness, b

Deliberate hydrocarbon inhalation among low-socioeconomic adolescents not necessarily apprehended by the police.

Nearly 600 low socioeconomic adolescents were given a 17-item multiple choice questionnaire designed by the authors. Demographic data tended, in some respects, to be consistent with previous research. In other respects there were some differences, e.g., sniffing tends to also be a problem with females. The data suggested that there are differences between chronic and social sniffers and that these differences should be taken into account when designing treatment/prevention programs. Another suggestion is that sniffing tends to be a social activity that is engaged in because (1) it is readily a

Health and employment of a female population in an urban area.

The authors discuss the results of a survey of women aged 25 to 50 living in a university town in southern France (Montpellier). Morbidity of these women (reported health problems, consultation with health care professionals etc) was analysed as a function of whether or not they were employed out of the home. Overall, differences were minimal; after correction for demographic factors, the only significant difference was more frequent reports of fatigue, overwork or nervousness in the employed women. Satisfaction with life situations was more closely correlated with health than was employment p

Patterns of substance use on a given day in a national sample of U.S. young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Young adulthood constitutes a period of substance use risk and many young adults engage in use of more than one substance. While existing work has examined young adult co-use of substances at the day-level, there has not been a comprehensive investigation of day-level substance use that considers mode and intensity of use in a national sample of U.S. young adults. METHODS: Individuals were eligible through participation in the nationally-representative Monitoring the Future study in 12th grade in 2018 and reporting past 30-day drinking in 12th-grade. Respondents completed a 14-d

Contrasting Mind-Wandering, (Dark) Flow, and Affect During Multiline and Single-Line Slot Machine Play.

Slot machines are a very popular form of gambling in which a small proportion of gamblers experience gambling-related problems. These players refer to a trance-like state that researchers have labelled 'dark flow'-a pleasurable, but maladaptive state where players become completely occupied by the game. We assessed 110 gamblers for mindfulness (using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale), gambling problems (using the Problem Gambling Severity Index), depressive symptoms (using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale), and boredom proneness (using the Boredom Proneness Scale). Participants p

Neural symphony of flow experience: Evidence for high-dimensional metastable dynamics.

Flow, an optimal experience characterized by deep immersion and engagement in an activity, has been extensively studied in behavioral research. However, its neural dynamic mechanism remains poorly understood. In a within-subject video gaming experiment, we captured neural activity underlying flow, boredom, and anxiety using a 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) system. Compared to boredom and anxiety, flow exhibits the highest global functional connectivity, metastability, and dimensionality of dynamic functional connectivity patterns, suggesting that flow is a highly adaptable process that

Predictive factors of excessive online poker playing.

Despite the widespread rise of online poker playing, there is a paucity of research examining potential predictors for excessive poker playing. The aim of this study was to build on recent research examining motives for Texas Hold'em play in students by determining whether predictors of other kinds of excessive gambling apply to Texas Hold'em. Impulsivity, negative mood states, dissociation, and boredom proneness have been linked to general problem gambling and may play a role in online poker. Participants of this study were self-selected online poker players (N = 179) who completed an online

Using deliberate mind-wandering to escape negative mood states: Implications for gambling to escape.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Slot machines are a pervasive form of gambling in North America. Some gamblers describe entering "the slot machine zone"-a complete immersion into slots play to the exclusion of all else. METHODS: We assessed 111 gamblers for mindfulness (using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS)), gambling problems (using the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI)), depressive symptoms (using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale), and boredom proneness (using the Boredom Proneness Scale). In a counterbalanced order, participants played a slot machine simulator and completed

The role of negative emotionality and impulsivity in depressive/anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence.

BACKGROUND: Much is still unclear about the role of personality in the structure of common psychiatric disorders such as depressive/anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence. This study will therefore examine whether various traits of negative emotionality and impulsivity showed shared or specific associations with these disorders. Method Cross-sectional data were used from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), including individuals with no DSM-IV psychiatric disorder (n = 460), depressive/anxiety disorder only (i.e. depressive and/or anxiety disorder; n = 1398), alcohol depe

Prevalence and functions of stereotyped behaviors in nonhandicapped children in residential care.

Caregivers in nine residential care institutions rated the occurrence of 15 stereotyped behaviors in 142 nonhandicapped children aged from 10 months to 11 years. The frequency and duration of each stereotypy as well as the typical situations in which it occurred were assessed. The most frequent stereotypies were thumbsucking, hair twisting, and body rocking in infants and young children; thumbsucking and making faces in preschool-age children; and nail biting/chewing in school-age children. Boys exhibited stereotypies more frequently than girls, and children with a suspected history of child a

A Comparison of Experimental Methods to Induce Mental Fatigue.

Appropriate induction of mental fatigue in the lab is imperative for properly investigating the effects of mental fatigue on behavior. In this study, we aimed to (1) identify a task for inducing mental fatigue that is both effective (i.e. sufficiently demanding) and feasible (i.e., sufficiently short in duration), and (2) to assess its effects on boredom, loss of motivation, and sleepiness. Therefore, we compared the following tasks: (1) an individualized TloadDback task (16 minutes), (2) an individualized TloadDback task (32 minutes), (3) an N-back task (32 minutes), and (4) a control task in
