BACKGROUND: In the Malaysian state of Sabah, P. knowlesi notifications increased from 2% (59/2,741) of total malaria notifications in 2004 to 98% (2030/2,078) in 2017. There was a gap regarding P. knowlesi acquisition risk factors related to practice specifically in working age group. The main objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for acquiring P. knowlesi infection in Sabah among the working age group.
METHODS AND METHODS: This retrospective population-based case-control study was conducted in Ranau district to assess sociodemographic, behavioural and medical history risk

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdown measures have drastically impacted daily life, particularly among vulnerable populations. University staff faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown, particularly after restrictions were imposed, requiring them to quickly adapt to e-learning and remote work. Given the limited research on this topic and the intriguing findings of previous studies, this research seeks to address the gap by exploring the distinct challenges faced by university staff and offering strategies for improved support during future disruptions.

Plasmodium knowlesi is the main cause of malaria in Sarawak, where studies on vectors of P. knowlesi have been conducted in only two districts. Anopheles balabacensis and An. donaldi were incriminated as vectors in Lawas and An. latens in Kapit. We studied a third location in Sarawak, Betong, where of 2169 mosquitoes collected over 36 days using human-landing catches, 169 (7.8%) were Anopheles spp. PCR and phylogenetic analyses identified P. knowlesi and/or P. cynomolgi, P. fieldi, P. inui, P. coatneyi and possibly novel Plasmodium spp. in salivary glands of An. latens and An. introlatus from

Human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria parasite of Macaca fascicularis and Macaca nemestrina (long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques respectively), occur throughout Southeast Asia, especially Malaysian Borneo. Other naturally-acquired human infections with malaria parasites from macaques in Southeast Asia are P. cynomolgi, P. inui-like, P. coatneyi and P. simiovale. In Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, M. fascicularis and M. nemestrina from only the Kapit Division have been examined previously for malaria parasites. In order to determine the distribution of P. knowlesi and other zoonotic m

A 3-year-old male child was presented with worsening abdominal pain, abdominal distension, lethargy, pallor and hepatosplenomegaly. The patient had multiple outpatient visits in the past and was treated with oral antibiotics, oral anthelmintic agents, albeit with minimal benefit. The patient also had non-neutropenic pyrexia spikes and oral ulcers. The patient was an adopted child; hence details about his biological parents' previous history were unclear. Differential diagnosis of Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML), Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML), Gaucher's disease, Thalassemia and

Medwayella traubiana n. sp., M. pfeifferi n. sp. and M. sabahae n. sp. (Pygiopsyllidae) are described from Sabah (north of Borneo island), the first two on Tupaia tana (Scandentia), the last on Sundasciurus lowii (Rodentia). Sex male is only identified, because these fleas have been collected in sympatry, or even in syntopy. Their determination is based on segment IX and aedeagus. If M. traubiana and M. pfeifferi are related to some known species, M. sabahae is clearly distinct from other Medwayella.

During September 7-11, 2000, CDC was notified by the Idaho Department of Health, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and the GeoSentinel Global Surveillance Network of at least 20 cases of acute febrile illness in three countries; all ill patients had participated in the Eco-Challenge-Sabah 2000 multisport expedition race in Borneo, Malaysia, during August 21-September 3, 2000. Participants included athletes from 29 U.S. states and 26 countries. This report updates the ongoing investigation of this outbreak through December 2, which suggests that Leptospira were the cause of

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria poses a significant challenge to efforts to eliminate malaria from Malaysia. Macaque reservoirs, outdoors-biting mosquitoes, human activities, and agricultural work are key factors associated with the transmission of this zoonotic pathogen. However, gaps in knowledge regarding reasons that drive malaria persistence in rural Kudat, Sabah, Northern Borneo remain. This study was conducted to address this knowledge gap, to better understand the complexities of these entangled problems, and to initiate discussion regarding new coun

Melioidosis is an infection caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Melioidosis can affect any organ and result in a broad spectrum of diseases. Ocular involvement in melioidosis is rare but can potentially lead to devastating outcomes. We describe ocular manifestations in 3 patients diagnosed with culture-confirmed melioidosis in Kapit, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Melioidosis affecting the eye can present as periorbital cellulitis and eyelid abscess. High clinical suspicion and early empirical treatment were crucial to a successful outcome. Surgical drainage of the abs

BACKGROUND: Non-human primates have long been identified to harbour different species of Plasmodium. Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), in particular, are reservoirs for P. knowlesi, P. inui, P. cynomolgi, P. coatneyi and P. fieldi. A previous study conducted in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, however revealed that long-tailed macaques could potentially harbour novel species of Plasmodium based on sequences of small subunit ribosomal RNA and circumsporozoite genes. To further validate this finding, the mitochondrial genome and the apicoplast caseinolytic protease M genes of Plasmodium spp.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health concern, especially with zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi presenting specific challenges in Southeast Asia. In Malaysia, Sarawak ranks second in P. knowlesi cases after Sabah. Rural populations in endemic areas experience increased exposure to forest and forest-edge zones where vector mosquitoes breed, thereby raising infection risk and complicating routine surveillance. These groups may carry asymptomatic or submicroscopic infections that act as hidden reservoirs, potentially hindering elimination efforts. This study aimed to assess the prevalence

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne dengue virus (DENV) is maintained in a sylvatic, enzootic cycle of transmission between canopy-dwelling non-human primates and Aedes mosquitoes in Borneo. Sylvatic DENV can spill over into humans living in proximity to forest foci of transmission, in some cases resulting in severe dengue disease. The most likely vectors of such spillover (bridge vectors) in Borneo are Ae. albopictus and Ae. niveus. Borneo is currently experiencing extensive forest clearance. To gauge the effect of this change in forest cover on the likelihood of sylvatic DENV spillover, it is first n

Mud crabs (Scylla spp.) can accumulate metals due to their benthic and deposit feeding nature. Octolasmis spp. are pedunculate barnacles commonly found in the gill chambers of mud crabs and traditionally regarded as ectocommensals. However, high infestations can obstruct airflow, trap organic waste, impair respiration, cause oxidative stress, tissue inflammation, and reduced immune responses in hosts, thus, supporting their consideration as ectoparasites. Octolasmis may also accumulate higher metal concentrations than their hosts, potentially revealing contaminant exposure in aquatic environme

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is endemic in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it is represented by a unique gentamicin-susceptible population. Despite trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (co-trimoxazole) being the cornerstone of eradication therapy, emerging reports of elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) among Sarawak isolates have raised concerns over its clinical efficacy. We performed a retrospective and comprehensive antibiotic susceptibility assessment of clinical B. pseudomallei isolates from hospitals across Sarawak. Susceptibility to trimethoprim

BACKGROUND: Effective surveillance is essential for detecting rabies virus (RABV) spillover into non-canid mammalian species, which represents an emerging concern for public and veterinary health. This report describes the first documented cases of dog associated rabies in goats in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia, highlighting the critical implications for veterinary and public health.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two goats were reported to exhibit clinical signs consistent with rabies, including recumbency, hypersalivation, stiffness, dehydration, and episodes of pedalling movements and opisthotonos. Both

The present study identified a new barnacle species from Malaysian waters, Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov., on morphological and molecular grounds. Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. is an intertidal species that is abundant on high shores, above the oyster zone. Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. has two morphotypes, based on shell colour. Brown morphs have brown shells with pale brown ridges and look similar to Microeuraphia withersi (Pilsbry, 1916). Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. has four teeth on the mandible, while M. withersi has but three. White morphs of C. ngankeeae sp. nov. possess white shells w

Cases of H5 highly pathogenic avian influenzas (HPAI) are on the rise. Although mammalian spillover events are rare, H5N1 viruses have an estimated mortality rate in humans of 60%. No human cases of H5 infection have been reported in Malaysian Borneo, but HPAI has circulated in poultry and migratory avian species transiting through the region. Recent deforestation in coastal habitats in Malaysian Borneo may increase the proximity between humans and migratory birds. We hypothesise that higher rates of human-animal contact, caused by this habitat destruction, will increase the likelihood of pote

The zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi parasite is a growing public health concern in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, where elimination of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria has been the focus of control efforts. Understanding of the genetic diversity of P. knowlesi parasites can provide insights into its evolution, population structure, diagnostics, transmission dynamics, and the emergence of drug resistance. Previous work has revealed that P. knowlesi fall into three main sub-populations distinguished by a combination of geographical location and macaque host (Macaca fascicularis and M. ne
