Risks of maternal prepregnancy overweight/obesity, excessive gestational weight gain, and bottle-feeding in infancy rapid weight gain: evidence from a cohort study in China.

Rapid weight gain (RWG) in infants is associated with numerous health problems, and its risk factors are still unclear. We assessed 98,097 maternal-infant pairs from a population-based cohort study and followed up with them until the infants were 6 months old. We assessed the associations between maternal prepregnancy weight status; gestational weight gain; feeding pattern; and infants' RWG at 0-1, 0-3, 1-3, and 3-6 months using multivariate unconditional logistic regression models, with controlled confounders. We found that maternal prepregnancy weight status, gestational weight gain, and fee

Effectiveness of Watching a Kumagai Method Video for Long-Nipple Bottle-Feeding for Children with Cleft Lip and Palate: A Pilot Experimental Before-After Trial Study.

AIM: This study aimed to determine whether the Kumagai method could be followed by watching an instructional video and to compare the feeding actions of specialists and the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven adults from diverse backgrounds were recruited and asked to feed a baby doll using a bottle feeder with a long nipple, and their actions were recorded. Then, they watched a 2.5-min instructional video of the Kumagai method and were asked to bottle-feed again. Video recordings of the participants were used to evaluate whether their actions followed the Kumagai method. Differ

The Kumagai Method Using the Pigeon Long Nipple for Dealing With Various Movements While Bottle Feeding Children With Cleft Lip And/or Palate: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Feeding poses a significant challenge for children with cleft lip and/or palate. The Kumagai method, a specialized approach for feeding these children, has been developed; its fundamental techniques have already been published. However, children often exhibit varied reactions to feeding, such as refusal and resistance. If not managed appropriately, these responses can hinder feeding progress. This study aimed to identify strategies for addressing different feeding-related movements in children with cleft lip and/or palate during bottle feeding. METHODS: In September 2022,

Bottle feeding to sleep beyond 12 months is associated with higher risk of tooth decay and overweight in Australian children: Findings from the Healthy Smiles Healthy Kids cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Bottle feeding to sleep may increase early childhood caries (ECC) and overweight risk through sugar exposure and overfeeding. This study examined the association between feeding to sleep at 24 and 36 months on both ECC and overweight at 3-4 years. METHODS: Participants were children in the Healthy Smiles Healthy Kids longitudinal birth cohort. Exposure was bottle feeding to sleep at 24 and 36 months. Outcomes were ECC (prevalence; number of caries-affected tooth surfaces, dmfs) and overweight at 3-4 years. RESULTS: 718 and 729 children had dental examinations and anthropometric me

[Effects of different feeding types on the physical growth of infants].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of different feeding types on the physical growth of infants. METHODS: Infants who visited the children health clinics regularly were recruited for the study. They were classified into breast feeding group, bottle feeding group and mixed feeding group according to the feeding types before 4-months-old. The growth indices were measured and the WHO BMI standards were used to identify overweight and obesity. RESULTS: The body weights and lengths of the male infants with breast feeding were greater than those with other feedings in the first 3 months. The gr

Effects of opaque, weighted bottles on maternal sensitivity and infant intake.

Caregivers' abilities to assess how much is in the bottle may lead to encouragement of infant bottle emptying and overfeeding. The present study assessed whether use of opaque, weighted bottles (as compared with conventional, clear bottles) improves feeding outcomes. Mothers with infants <32 weeks of age (n = 76) were assessed on two separate days. Mothers fed their infants from an opaque, weighted bottle on 1 day and a clear bottle on the other; conditions were counterbalanced. Blinded raters certified in the Nursing Child Assessment Feeding Scale scored all videos to determine maternal sensi

Potential effect of demographic and other variables in studies comparing morbidity of breast-fed and bottle-fed infants.

Comparing the morbidity of breast-fed and bottle-fed infants is confounded by inherent differences in breast-feeding and bottle-feeding mothers and their infants. Self-selection introduces complex variables encompassing much more than milk source used for infant feeding. Reasons for selecting breast or bottle feeding relate to demographic, socioeconomic, educational, ethnic, cultural, and psychological factors, as well as maternal and infant physical and emotional health. Many of the differences in the maternal populations may affect infant care practices, access to medical care, and infant he

Current Postoperative Feeding Practices Following Surgical Repairs for Infants With Cleft Palate.

BACKGROUND: Nearly all surgeons have restrictive postoperative feeding protocols in place after primary cleft lip and cleft palate repairs. There are no standardized recommendations, potentially resulting in widely variable practices among cleft surgeons and teams. The purpose of this study was to examine current postoperative feeding practices for infants with cleft palate after lip and palate repairs. METHODS: A survey of 50 questions was sent to members of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA). Inclusion criteria included providers from North America that have either cu

Role of instrumental learning in tolerance to cathinone hypophagia.

The effects of dl-cathinone on milk intake and motor activity were investigated in bottle- and cannula-fed rats. Acute injections of cathinone produced dose-dependent increases in activity in both groups but only produced decreased intake in bottle-fed rats. With chronic injections, tolerance to the suppression of intake developed in the bottle-fed group, accompanied by decreased activity. After the tolerance phase, switching from bottle to cannula feeding produced further increases in intake, whereas switching from cannula to bottle feeding produced decreased intakes. These results suggest th

Cigarette smoking by pregnant women with particular reference to their past and subsequent breast feeding behaviour.

1,790 postpartum women were asked about their smoking habits and baby feeding practices and about a number of other attitudes and physical attributes. For those variables not concerned with baby feeding, our findings generally support previous research; for example, smokers in comparison to non-smokers tended to have more emotional problems, more reproductive failures and babies with lower birth-weights. For baby feeding, we found that smokers tended to have little prior knowledge of breast feeding, favour bottle feeding, have been fed by bottle by their mothers, and wean earlier than non-smok

Breastfeeding infants who were extremely low birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect of breastfeedings and bottle feedings in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants (birth weight </=800 g). METHODS: A total of 12 ELBW infants (mean birth weight, 672 +/- 95 g; mean gestation, 26 +/- 2 weeks) served as their own controls in this prospective study comparing physiologic parameters during bottle and breastfeeding. The infants were put to breast the same week they began on bottle feedings of human milk or premature infant formula (mean gestation, 35 weeks). One breastfeeding and one bottle feeding were observed each day for 10 days. Pre-

Effects of feeding and social factors on diarrhoea and vomiting in infants.

In a prospective study of infants and their feeding in south east Queensland, Australia, the incidences of reported diarrhoea and/or vomiting in breast, bottle, and mixed (breast and bottle) fed infants were compared from birth to 1 year. Up to 6 months infants who were given breast feeds, with or without other milks, had less diarrhoea and/or vomiting than those given bottle feeds only. Breast feeding seemed to protect the infant against possible introduced infections even when other milks were given along with the breast milk. After 6 months breast feeding did not reduce the incidence of gas

Breastfeeding and Supplementary Oral Feeding Methods in Very Preterm Infants: A Prospective Within-Infant Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants often require supplementary oral feeding while direct breastfeeding skills mature. We compared short-term feeding performance and suck-swallow-breath coordination (SSBC) across three oral feeding methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective within-infant study, 30 clinically stable infants born at <32 weeks' gestation were evaluated at ≥34 weeks' corrected gestational age. Each infant underwent three routinely scheduled feeds approximately 3 hours apart: direct breastfeeding, syringe-assisted finger feeding, and feeding with one specific slow-flow Natur

[Methods of feeding and illness in infants in the first six months of life].

UNLABELLED: There is now a general agreement, that breast feeding prevents infantile gastrointestinal infections and non-gastrointestinal infections in all settings. In this study, we tried to pay attention to Kovar et al. who suggested that studies to detect the effects of breast feeding on health should be undertaken for other reasons and should include the collection of related information as part of the study. METHODS: Data collection. The population consisted of all infants born in the community of Krushevac in 1994. After at least 36 weeks of pregnancy their weight was 2500 g or more. T

Prolonged feeding practice and its effects on developing dentition.

Muscular activity of the lips, cheeks, and the tongue are important factors, which not only guide the occlusal development but also affect the growth of the jaws. Bottle feeding has been known to cause a myriad of changes in the oro-facial development. But the adverse effects of feeding practices with respect to developing dentition has been a subject of controversy. Hence a study was designed with the aim and objectives to check the commonly adopted feeding practices in South Kanara, to compare the occlusion of 3- to 5-year-old children with breast feeding, bottle feeding or combination, and

Toward understanding the connections between infant jaundice and infant feeding.

Parents face a paradox when they are told: Breast is best; bottle-feeding is hazardous to health. But breast-fed babies are more likely to become severely jaundiced than bottle-fed babies, and severe jaundice can lead to brain damage. This article will explore the natural physiology of jaundice with a focus on breast-feeding-associated jaundice, primary prevention of hyperbilirubinemia, and current evidence-based recommendations about feeding jaundice breast-fed infants.

Breast feeding in Kingston, Jamaica.

A longitudinal study was carried out on 300 Kingston infants born at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The method of milk feeding and the reasons given by the mothers for beginning bottle feeding were recorded. Other factors influencing the incidence of breast feeding were examined. Complementing in hospital, maternal employment, improving socio-economic status, advertising, and general misinformation were considered important. A higher incidence of gastro-enteritis was found in the first 4 months of life among partly or wholly bottle-fed babies than among breast-fed babies. Weight i
