A 39-year-old woman with a left-sided inguinal swelling was referred to us with a diagnosis of inguinal hernia. On asking leading questions, the patient gave a typical history of cyclical pain and increased swelling during menstruation. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy revealed endometrial glands. Preoperatively, the extent of the endometriotic lesion was delineated using MRI. The lesion was approached through the patient's caesarean scar for cosmetic reasons and excised in toto. Final diagnosis was round ligament endometriosis. The patient was asymptomatic at 3, 6 and 12 months' follow-up. This

A total of 192 AV fistulas were created at the anatomical snuff-box. One hundred and eighty-two (94.8%) of them were patent and ready for use at the end of one month. This fistula has several advantages over the more commonly performed Brescia-Cimino radio cephalic fistula at the distal forearm. Snuff-box fistula is easier to perform, has a better patency rate, fewer wound complications and preserves proximal sites for fistula.

Facilitating the restoration of upper limb functionality is a key objective of stroke rehabilitation. This study aimed to compare the effects of boxing and scapular stabilization training on scapular mobility, balance angle, muscle strength, motor function, and satisfaction in hemiparetic patients. A total of sixty patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the boxing group (BG; n = 20), the scapular stabilization group (SSG; n = 20), or the control group (CG; n = 20) which received no treatment at all. Each treatment group participated in three sessions per week for a total of ei

PURPOSE: The physiological examination of boxing has been limited to systemic response in amateur athletes. The demands of professional boxing have been overlooked, despite the different competition format. We sought to determine the physiological demands placed on skeletal muscle in professional boxing.
METHODS: Ten male professional boxers (age 26 ± 5 years, height 177 ± 4 cm, weight 71 ± 6 kg) were recruited for this observational study. On different days, the athletes completed 6 × 3 min rounds of pad, bag or spar-based training with 1 min recovery between each round. Prior to each sessio

The hand region is reported as the most common injury site in boxing, with more observed time loss than any other area in this sport. The amount of wrist motion, specifically flexion, has been described as contributing to these injuries, yet no literature is available to quantify wrist kinematics in boxing. This is the first paper describing wrist motion on impact in boxing. Utilising an electromagnetic tracking system, two types of shots were assessed, Jab (straight arm) and Hook (bent arm), during in-vivo testing procedures with 29 elite boxers. For both shots, flexion and ulnar deviation oc

OBJECTIVE: Methamphetamine (METH) dependence, especially among women, is a serious global health problem. Kick-boxing exercise can be used to reduce cue-induced craving and develop a healthy lifestyle for female with METH dependencies. This study aimed to assess acute kick-boxing related changes in effective connectivity (EC) in the brain of females with METH dependencies by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals.
METHODS: The fNIRS signals were continuously recorded from the left and right prefrontal cortices (LPFC/RPFC) and left and right motor cortices (LMC/RMC) of 30

The long-term effects of repetitive head trauma on the brain have often been studied in boxers and American football players. The medical literature on this topic was reviewed in order to compare the findings related to boxing with those related to football. The evidence gathered from this review indicates that there are significant differences between the clinical and neuropathological descriptions of the chronic brain damage reported in retired boxers compared to those reported in retired football players. Differing biomechanics of head impacts in the two sports may help explain the differen

Thousands of boys and girls younger than 19 years of age participate in boxing in North America. Although boxing provides benefits for participants, including exercise, self-discipline and self-confidence, the sport of boxing encourages and rewards deliberate blows to the head and face. Participants in boxing are at risk of head, face and neck injuries, including chronic and even fatal neurological injuries. Concussions are one of the most common injuries occurring in boxing. Because of the risk of head and facial injuries, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics

This case report describes a lateral luxation of an upper incisor in a 19-year-old non-professional boxer. The tooth displacement gradually worsened over several months because the boxer received repeated blows to the head without using a mouthguard. Being a chronic dental trauma, rather than an acute lateral luxation, this case had several unique features: the labial plate of the alveolar bone was penetrated, the root apex was free in the vestibulum, the tooth was mobile (second degree) and radiographs revealed bone resorption. This case emphasized the need for a mouthguard to be used even wi

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common neurological disorder that diminishes neuromotor control. Exercise training provides a nonpharmacological treatment option that may help motor symptom severity and trajectory. In the present case series, we assessed linear and non-linear measures of neuromotor control along with functional measures of mobility in six men living with PD across a year of multimodal exercise training. Our measurements encompassed mobility, balance, strength, and force control metrics and were captured at baseline as well as at defined intervals following exercise engagement. T

Boxing punch type classification and kinematic analysis are essential for coaches and athletes, providing critical insights into punch variety and effectiveness, which are vital for performance improvement. Existing methods for punch recognition and classification typically rely on wearable sensor data or video data; however, no fully automated system currently exists. While coaches prefer video-based analysis for its ability to easily visualize punch action errors and refine technique, video-based classification suffers from lower accuracy compared to sensor-based methods due to limitations s

The recent prohibition of headguards by the International Boxing Association (IBA; previously AIBA) has sparked worldwide controversy regarding safeguarding the health of athletes in the boxing community. Studies have evaluated the role of headguards in preventing concussion, cuts and lacerations and fractures. However, the evidence for improvement in these outcomes remains poorly characterised and a gap remains in the ability to inform evidence-based sport and health policy in this space. This Current Opinion article demonstrates the effectiveness of headguards in protecting against cuts and

PURPOSE: Regular exercise can reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, a common neurodegenerative disorder. The Rock Steady Boxing organization created an exercise program for people with Parkinson's Disease (pwPD) modelled after traditional boxing. The purpose of this study was to better understand the physical function, exercise beliefs, contextual factors, class experiences and outcome perceptions of pwPD participating in Rock Steady Boxing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pragmatic qualitative approach of semi-structured interviews and class observations was supplemented by cross-sectional ph

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of head impacts, sustained over the course of three rounds of amateur boxing, on indices of cerebrovascular function.
METHODS: Eighteen university amateur boxers (six female) completed three experimental trials in a randomised order; (1) three rounds of boxing (BOX), (2) an equivalent bout of pad boxing (where no blows to the head were sustained; PAD), and (3) a time-matched seated control trial (CON). Indices of cerebrovascular function were determined immediately before and 45 min after each trial. Specifically, dynamic

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a highly prevalent neurodegenerative disease whose incidence is increasing with an aging population. One of the most serious manifestations of PD is gait instability, leading to falls and subsequent complications that can be debilitating, even fatal. Boxing therapy (BT) uses gait and balance exercises to improve ambulation in people with PD, though its efficacy has not yet been fully proven.
METHODS: In the current longitudinal observational study, 98 participants with idiopathic PD underwent twice-weekly BT sessions. Primary outcome was self-reported f

It has been shown that traditional dances can be effective in improving physical functions in the elderly persons. Unlike other traditional dance exercises, the ancient Thai boxing exercise may be suitable for elderly persons in other ethnicities who are interested in boxing. This randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effects of the exercise on physical functions in elderly subjects. Healthy elderly subjects were recruited and randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the ancient Thai boxing group. The control group received education about the exercise and a home pro

OBJECT: In spite of ample literature pointing to rotational and combined impact dosage being key contributors to head and neck injury, boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) padding is still designed to primarily reduce cranium linear acceleration. The objects of this study were to quantify preliminary linear and rotational head impact dosage for selected boxing and MMA padding in response to hook punches; compute theoretical skull, brain, and neck injury risk metrics; and statistically compare the protective effect of various glove and head padding conditions.
METHODS: An instrumented Hybrid II

INTRODUCTION: The Box and Block Test (BBT) is commonly used to evaluate unilateral manual dexterity in patients with stroke. While the BBT is quick and simple to use, it causes large measurement variability because the administration is not standardized. In this study, we evaluated the validity and reliability of the modified BBT (mBBT) and a targeted BBT (tBBT) in patients with stroke.
METHOD: Our participants were 50 patients with stroke. We evaluated the criterion validity of the mBBT and tBBT through its correlations with scores on the 9-Hole Peg Test (9-HPT), the Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Up
